Book Reports Please note that you must do a Canadian author and a classic. You must have maximum 2-3/4 page summary of your book as well as a brief review, rating the book out of 10 and highlighting the best part and the least favourite part of the book. Marks may not be given if your summary is too large. A title page with the name of the book, your name, type of report and which book report is being handed in is to be included. The title page does not have to have elaborate artwork. You may be expected to do a book talk for each of these books. All book reports are to be done independently. There may be some time given to read in class. Category and descriptions. A day in the life of... Write an “A day in the life of”, story about the type of animal that was the main character in the book. Write about what a typical day would be like. Include anecdotes from the moment the animal awakes to when they go to sleep. Minimum 1/2 pages Design a room Biography/ Autobiography Design a room that the main character of the book would have lived in. Construction of your model should be no larger than 30cm x 45cm x 30cm. Make sure that the room you design reflects the type of person who is the main character. Include a 2 page explanation of the elements of your design and how they reflect your characters tastes and preferences. Canadian Author Book Jacket Create a book jacket for your book. Include the title, author and a summary of the plot and main character(s). Try to find out information about the author and other books they have written and include this information as well. Classics Essay Write a 2-3 page essay to describe why this book has become a classic. Remember that when you write an essay, you must include an introduction, main body and conclusion. In the body of the essay, give at least 2 examples to back up your statements. For example: If I were to say that Bill was very mean; I should support this claim. “We know he was mean because he said that he deliberately tormented the animals and always picked on his little brother.” Fantasy List Fantasy Fantasies are stories where animals, people and make believe characters or objects have supernatural powers. Make a list of 4-5 characteristics of your book that make it a fantasy. Give at least two examples of each. Draw illustrations of parts of the book in which these special characteristics are exhibited. Fiction Plot Mobile Create a mobile that will illustrate the plot of the story. Try to identify and illustrate at least 6 significant events. Include an explanation of each part of the mobile and how it fits in the plot. Historical Fiction or Non-fiction Dear Diary Write an excerpted diary for the main character of your book. Remember to write from the characters point of view. Include at least 7 entries to provide enough information about the plot. Animal
Lesson plan Adopt the role of teacher and write out a lesson plan that you might use to teach a group how to do something that you learned from your book. Mystery Billboard/Movie poster Pretend that your book has been made into a movie and you are responsible for designing a poster to advertise the book. If you need to, go to the theatres and see some of the posters that they use. Newspaper/Magazine Editorial Read 2 articles from magazines and/or newspapers about the same topic. The articles should be at least 500 words or more. Write an editorial expressing your opinion on the theme of the articles and how the journalists presented their points. Include copies of the articles. Non-Fiction Time line Make a timeline to illustrate at least 10 of the most important events that make this a good story. Your timeline should be continuous and show scale of time. Example: 1920 1925 1930 1935 1940 : : : : : Jake was born Jake discovered Jake hit Jake was drafted how to throw his first by the Yankees a knuckle ball grand slam Age 10 age15 age 16 Science Fiction Comic strip Science fiction is just as it says; Fiction based on Science. List at least 5 differences between the reality of your book and our present day reality. Make a comic strip that will illustrate these five points and the basic theme of the story. Sports Sports article Pretend you are a sports reporter for the local newspaper. Choose a significant event from the book and write a sports article about this event. Remember the five w’s: Who, What, Where, When, Why and include How. Video/Movie Review Read a movie review from a major newspaper like the Star or the Globe and Mail. Pretend you are the local movie critic. Write a review about the movie. Use the same format as the review you read. Remember to describe plot, setting and characterization as well as cinematography (that’s the photography), acting and directing. Due dates Book reports are due
