The microfiche edition German Books on Islam from the 16th century to 1900 represents a unique collection of German-language literature on Islam and includes some 1,500 independent works filmed in full text. This publication contains titles covering the Arabic, Ottoman-Turkish and Persian regions, and is arranged according to subject group in part editions. The first two parts of the edition contained works on the areas of “Religion and Theology, Law and Custom” and the “History of the Arab World and Persia”. The third part now offers a collection of about 800 works on approximately 1,100 microfiches on the “History of the Ottoman Empire”, one of the most important and powerful empires of the late Middle Ages and modern times.

German Books on Islam from the 16th Century to 1900
Microfiche Edition Compiled by Jutta Çıkar and Mustafa Çıkar

European perception of the Ottoman Empire over the centuries was characterised by both fear as well as fascination and interest in the exotic culture and art. Fear of the Turks had started to spread following the siege of Vienna in 1529 by Suleyman the Magnificent (1495/96–1566). The ‘Turkish danger’ became the subject of discussion and the fight against the Ottoman Empire became a battle against Islam. Only when the German empire began to approach the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 19th century did this image begin to change. This ambivalence between fear and fascination is also seen in the German-language books on the history of the Ottoman Empire, which are brought together for the first time in this edition. Here are united both familiar and unfamiliar works, rare and bibliographic treasures. Works have been borrowed from countless libraries and compiled and filmed especially for this edition. In addition to general historical and sociological descriptions, the edition provides treatises on the history of individual areas of the Ottoman Empire, which at its zenith extended over three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa. Works on the dynastic and administrative history are also included. Biographies of rulers and other important personalities, memoirs, travel reports and legation reports recount the tense relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Europe. Ottoman expansion and military conflicts with the European powers – for example, the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 and 1683 or the Russian-Ottoman wars in the second half of the 18th century – represent areas of particular interest for the numerous writings on war and military history. Chronicles and document collections round off this wide spectrum of literature. The period covered by the literature on Islam ranges from the 16th to the end of the 19th century. Two of the oldest works are Paolo Giovio’s ‘Ursprung des Turkischen Reichs bis auff den itzigen Solyman’ (ca. 1538) and Jean Jacques Boissard’s ‘Leben und Contrafaiten der türckischen und persischen Sultanen’ (1596). Apart from the monumental and comprehensive historical works of Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall and Johann Wilhelm Zinkeisen, the edition also contains less well-known books, such as Mustafa Refik’s: ‘Ein kleines Sündenregister Abdul-Hamid’s II.’ (1899).
