Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin T.D.
Dail Eireann
Leinster House
Kildare Street
Dublin 2

PQ 28861/08 To ask the Minister for Health and Children if she will establish a structured
tinnitus support service including clinical and audiological services, professional support
and peer and volunteer support for people with tinnitus; and if she will make a statement
on the matter.
Dear Deputy Ó Caoláin,

Your Parliamentary Question above has been referred to me for attention.

Tinnitus management and support is provided by adopting a coordinated approach through
integration of the various elements of the service. Audiological Scientists, Audiologists,
Radiologists and ENT services and other professionals provide support and advice to sufferers
of tinnitus. In addition a range of voluntary organisations such as Deaf/Hear, Irish Tinnitus
Society etc. provide a range of services to sufferers of tinnitus. Patients are also provided with
tinnitus information leaflets, which are published by the Irish Tinnitus Association and which
contain details of support services for tinnitus sufferers.

The Irish Tinnitus Association is based in the premises of the National Association for the
Deaf (NAD) on North Frederick Street. The HSE grant aids the NAD for provision of
services to people with hearing difficulties. The NAD provides office space, administrative
support and postage service to the Irish Tinnitus Association. The NAD has a post for
tinnitus re-training.

A structured tinnitus support service such as the one described by you exists in the HSE
South. It has been evaluated positively and may be extended to other areas of the HSE subject
to additional funding and resources being made available.

I trust that this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Mary O Connell
Assistant National Director (Primary Care)
Office of the Chief Executive Officer
