Re: Application for Leave of Absence of School Child

You are considering asking for special consideration for leave for your child in addition to the 12 weeks of holiday
already available. Please read the policy and guidance below before deciding whether you wish to make a special
request on the form overleaf.

Yours sincerely

POLICY & GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS ON
                                HOLIDAY ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

As part of our legal responsibility for promoting attendance at school, we are required to decide whether every given
absence is “authorised” or “unauthorised”.

It has been a general assumption among many parents that there is an entitlement to holidays in school time. This is not
the legal position. Schools may grant holiday leave but are under no obligation to do so. It is the law that all holidays
(including a single day’s absence) must be requested in advance. The form for this is overleaf. In future any absence
not authorised in advance for the purpose of a holiday will be marked as unauthorised. As you know, this is reported
to you on the termly reports and in whole school figures published annually.

As a school we do not have set rules about when and when not to authorise holiday absence. However, generally
speaking, the Headteacher will not authorise unless there is an exceptional reason. Parents in Year 9 should note that
no authorisation will be given during the week of testing in May. Parents of Year 11 pupils should note that no
authorisation will usually be given and especially not in the Spring Term prior to and during the Summer term GCSE
Examination period. Every request is considered on merit and there is no intention of making life difficult for the sake
of it. However, good attendance and parental commitment to regular attendance is known to be a key factor in
children’s academic success.

Where the school has a concern over the attendance of a pupil, the LEA Education Welfare Service will be informed
and a home visit initiated.
