Frequently Asked Questions Borrowing from the Library

What can I borrow? Society members can borrow five items at any one time. There are over 10,000 items (monographs and videos) available for immediate loan. These are listed on our computer catalogue and can be quickly identified by library staff. Staff can also suggest titles for specific subjects. In addition there are approximately 50,000 older items which can be made available for loan if required. These take a little longer to identify and process. The library does not loan certain works of reference or bound volumes or single issues of journals. What is the library’s subject coverage? The library covers a wide range of subjects of interest to pharmacists. All aspects of pharmacy practice are included as well as therapeutics and the use of medicines. Medical conditions and medicine generally is also well represented. Related topics are also covered with information on herbal medicine and complementary therapies among many others. The industry is not neglected with books on industrial pharmacy including pharmaceutical technology, clinical trials, and good manufacturing practice. New and emerging subjects from gene therapy to medicines management are also represented. This is only a small sample of the many subjects where we hold information, please contact us with your specific requirements. How can I borrow? A simple phone call is all it takes. Members can also reach us by fax, letter or email. Library staff will help identify suitable material for your needs. The vast majority of items are loaned for an initial period of 28 days. Members can renew these loans for a further two 28 day periods assuming they have not been requested by another user in the meantime. Once a maximum of three 28 day periods have expired the item must be returned. What does it cost? There is no charge for the lending service. We will pay postal costs for sending items anywhere in the United Kingdom. The only costs a member has to bear is the cost of returning borrowed items to us. Items should be securely packaged preferably in a padded bag and we recommend obtaining a certificate of posting available free at post offices. Fines are levied for the late return of borrowed items. A fine of 20p per day will be charged for the majority of items retained beyond their due date. A very few items, in heavy demand, have a loan status of just 14 days and cannot be renewed, these carry a fine of 50p per day. Can non-members borrow? Borrowing rights can be extended free to pre-registration trainees and pharmacy students on application to the library. Other students and any non-members can use the library for reference on payment of a fee or can borrow items for an extra fee.
