Physical Education and Sports Development: a Short guide to the literature This is a brief guide to finding the books, journals and online sources you will need for your studies. Most of what you need is available in the I M Marsh Learning Resource Centre. However, LJMU’s other two Learning Resource Centres also stock some materials in your subject area. Avril Robarts LRC stocks materials to support Sports Science; Aldham Robarts LRC has a large Business and Management collection. Whilst the majority of books for PSD will begin with the number 796 other relevant books will be shelved elsewhere. The Library Catalogue can be searched in a number of ways including Words anywhere, Author, Title, and Subject. If an item you need is out on loan here at I M Marsh or is on loan at another of our LRCs you can place a ‘Hold request’ and we will send you an email when the item arrives. The catalogue is available via dedicated terminals within the LRC or via the internet at: http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/librarycatalogue. Always ask the staff if you need any help. There are two places to check whether we subscribe to a journal (as a print subscription or as an electronic journal): the Library Catalogue http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/librarycatalogue and Findref http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lea/81553.htm See also http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lea/78917.htm for links to relevant electronic journals Adapted physical activity quarterly** American journal of sports medicine* Athletic insight: the online journal of sport psychology* Athletics weekly British journal of sports medicine** British journal of teaching physical education (pea) Bulletin of physical education European physical education review** European sport management quarterly* Exercise and sports science reviews Fhs: the magazine of the National Coaching Foundation Gymnast Inclusive sport International journal of P.E. Define your topic as closely as possible. Be prepared to narrow it down or broaden it depending on how much information you can find (in consultation with your tutor). 2. Compile a list of search words and phrases which describe the subject. 3. Search more than one database. 4. Make use of the Userguides – usually available to print out before clicking on the Database link. 5. If the database offers a Basic or an Advanced search, always choose Advanced. 6. Databases often contain a mix of abstracts of articles as well as full text articles. LJMU does not have access to the full text of ALL journals. However, abstract only articles MAY be available in full text in a different database or Findref http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lea/81553.htm will tell you whether – the journal you need is available 7. If, after checking the catalogue and Findref, LJMU does not have full text access to an article, you can fill in an Inter Library Loan form at the LRC counter and we will order a photocopy of the article for you (for a small charge, currently £1). Articles take approx two weeks to arrive. Full text online services Rather than waste time browsing through the contents pages of individual journal titles, it is far quicker to use an electronic database to search the contents of 100 or 1000 journals with a single search. Learning Information Services subscribe to a number of electronic services accessible at: http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/LEA/77340.htm You will almost certainly require a username and password to access them.
