Module Request and Exam Registration Form

MSc Distance Learning Petroleum Engineering
Dear Student

Congratulations on achieving entry to our Masters Degree or Diploma in Petroleum Engineering
Distance Learning course.

Your first module accompanies this letter and contains all the material you require to sit the
examination in this subject. I would like to draw your attention to the following issues which
should assist you in your studies:

  1. Each Chapter of this manual contains a set of learning objectives at the start of the chapter. These
learning objectives are aligned with the examination so they give you a clear appreciation of what
you are required to learn from the accompanying chapter.

  2. You will find a set of example examination papers at the back of the manual. One of these sample
examinations is accompanied by a model solution. These are provided so that you will have a
clear understanding of what the examination in this subject will be like and what we require (in
terms of breadth and depth) as solutions to the questions.

  3. We now have an online version of the materials in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
which we call VISION. This online version of the materials also contains extra materials which
should help with your study. If you have not yet received details of how to access VISION then
     please contact Jan.Ford@pet.hw.ac.uk.

  4. Distance Learning by its nature is self study and there will be no requirement for you to attend
lectures or seminars at Heriot-Watt. However, a level of support is available. Should you
experience any difficulties or technical queries regarding the content of the manual please address
your questions to Jan.Ford@pet.hw.ac.uk who will assist in obtaining a response from the
     appropriate author.

  5. If you identify any errors in the materials please notify our graphic artist Mr John Wright at John.
     Wright@pet.hw.ac.uk

There are also some administrative issues that we would like you to pay attention to so that we can
provide as high a level of service as possible.

  1. Module Request Forms:
You will find module request forms and examination forms in this manual. PLEASE DO NOT
RETURN MODULE REQUEST FORMS OR EXAMINATION REGISTRATION FORMS BY
EMAIL AS WE CANNOT GUARANTEE CREDIT CARD SECURITY ON OUR SERVER. PLEASE
POST AS INSTRUCTED ON THE FORM OR FAX to 0131 451 3127

  2. Examination Registration Deadlines:
It is advisable to make a note in your diary of the examination date(s) for this and subsequent
modules and ensure that you register for the exam by the deadline indicated on the Examination
Registration Form contained at the front of your module. All exam dates are also published on
the website. You can also obtain copies of this form online at www.pet.hw.ac.uk Please note
that due to the number of students, overseas examination locations involved and the
complexity of arrangements we cannot under any circumstances accept examination
     registrations outside the deadline stated.
  3. News Items
Please log into the website at regular intervals. Any pertinent or urgent information will be
posted under Latest News at http://www.pet.hw.ac.uk/courses/distance/news.htm Please take
     responsibility for keeping yourself updated.

  4. FAQs
Although we enjoy hearing from students please check the above sources of information and the
FAQ site at http://www.pet.hw.ac.uk/courses/distance/faqs.htm before you send an email question
to the support staff. As in all areas of business today we receive a lot of emails about issues that
are already covered in the sources above and this consumes a great deal of administrative time
which we would rather spend on improving the overall service to everyone. The answer to most
general queries can be found on the website.

Finally, enjoy your studies.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Jan Ford

MODULE REQUEST AND EXAM REGISTRATION FORM

The students are required to sit examinations in all nine of the discipline specific modules in the programme. Practice
examinations, together with model solutions are contained in the course manuals. These reflect the level of difficulty of
the actual final examination and provide the student with the means to assess their readiness for the examination.
