                                  CHAPER 13(1-6)

SCRIPUTURE QUOTE: PS 102:18-20 Let this be recorded for a generation to
come, so that a people yet unborn may praise the LORD: that he looked down
from his holy height, from the heaven the LORD looked at the earth, to hear
the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die.

HEB 13:1
Let mutual love continue.

Can we keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters? What does it mean to love one
another as brother/sister? We know how to love one another as brothers and sisters at
home because they have grown up with us; you have accepted that person is a part of
your life because there is a blood connection so you are willing to give yourself for them.
Jesus of Nazareth calls all of us His brothers. HEB 2:11 says For the one who sanctifies
and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not
ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. We are of the same family so your brothers
are not only ones who are born in the same family. Look at the brother/sister on your
right and on your left that is your bother or sister, ask yourself honestly in your heart of
hearts to what extend are you willing to go out of your way for the person next to you.
The writer of this book, anointed by the Spirit of God, is saying you have got to keep on
loving one another as brothers even if within the house brothers will fall apart but within
the church we should not, we should love one another because we are part of the same

Story: A little girl was all excited because in her community on the eve of the 2nd WW victory all
the community were to have a big programme. They were to stage a drama involving all the
major points of the 2nd WW. Then came a man „Winston Churchill‟ on the stage and gave a
speech and he rallied and encouraged the entire nation. He stood there and said we will fight
everywhere, we will fight on land, we will fight in the air, we will fight at sea, we will fight
everywhere. The little girl got up and said mama I did not know he was one of our relatives. She
came from a family where everyone quarrelled with one another so when she saw this guy talking
about fighting she said I did not know he was related to us.

There is a problem even in the church today; when you look around can people genuinely
see us having brotherly love for one another. It is very easy to say „Praise the Lord‟ but
when you lose your job and come to the same person for a job let us see what they can
do for you. Mt 5:16 Let your light shine before men that they may see your good
works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Brotherly love is not just what comes
from the mouth it must come from the heart, it must be demonstrated in our action.
What does it mean when we say brother? Is there a meaning attached to that word or is
it just a greeting? When the early church greeted one another they meant it. Acts 2:44
tells us they gave to anyone as they had need. Brotherly love is love in action. That is
what we are urged to do. These were Jews who had left their former ways and had
accepted Jesus and this book is talking about everything greater, a greater life, a greater
sacrifice, a greater high priest, a greater man and a greater God but there were times
because people were questioning, the author is telling them they were leaving something
lesser for something greater. All these people who were Jews were not willing to accept
the gentiles as their younger brothers who have come back like the prodigal son. LK
22:31-32 „Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but
I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, once you have
turned back strengthen your brothers.” That is what we must do. It is not about James
and John and Andrew.

The question is who is our brother? MT 25:32 tells us that when the Son of Man comes He
will separate the sheep from the goats and He will judge them according to what they
have done. MT 25:45 “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these
who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Whatever you do to the least of
these brothers of mine you do it unto me. Whatever you do to the least of these
brothers, whatever you do to me or her you have done it unto Me. When you turn your
back from someone you are turning it from Him, when you reach out and help you are
reaching out and helping Him, but whatever you do to the least of these brothers or
sisters, not to your friends or colleagues in the office but to the least of them. There
must be no distinction whatsoever. Everyone is the same that is what brotherly love is
all about.

Story: Two steam boats were sailing from Memphis to New Orleans carrying cargo on the
Mississippi river. The sailors from one boat started to jeer at the sailors from the other boat and
started saying we are going to beat you and we will reach New Orleans and finish even before you
can come in. So the sailors from the other boat said we will see and they had a race. They
started to pump up the steam and the two boats pushed the coal in and started going faster and
faster and then one boat started to fall behind. They had just enough coal to make it their
destination but not enough to race so they said we have all the cargo with us and let us use it and
they took out bags and started throwing it in the fire and gathered speed and overtook the other
boat and they finally reached their destination - but at what cost had they reached there. The
precious cargo which they were supposed to carry was destroyed.

In our life we all carry precious cargo in the form of husband/wife, mother/father,
children, brothers/sisters friends/colleagues, community, the least of these brothers of
ours are precious cargo that God has given us as a responsibility but we want to reach
there first. For us to reach there first means burning some of this precious cargo we have
to sacrifice to get there first. That is not how brothers love. Greater love as no man than
this that he lays down is life for his friend (JN 15:13). ROM 12:10 Love one another with
mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Why do we honour another
more than yourself because whatever you do to the least of your brothers you will do it
to Him. When you honour others you honour God because you are doing it to Him and that
is why you are challenged in this verse. There are five principles for sound living in this
chapter and one is Brotherly love.

HEB 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without
knowing it.

Do not forget to entertain strangers GEN 18:1-3 The Lord appeared to Abraham by the
oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He
looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from
the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, “My lord,
if I find favour with you, do not pass by your servant.” They were strangers and he
calls one of them lord and he brings them into his house. The „lord‟ is used as a sign of
respect and a small „l‟ is used for lord. He had no idea of whom he was taking care of at
that time and blessings come right after that because of what he had done that day God
told him you will have a son. Blessings will come, sitting for 99 years wondering what is
going to happen, no future, no son to carry your name but Abraham because of what you
have done even though your physical body cannot naturally give you a son, I will bless
you. Now we call it hospitality, if you practice hospitality God is going to bless you.

Story: In Arkansan, Texas, there was a huge chemical plant and there was an explosion in the
chemical plant one night. Being a chemical plant it caught fire very quickly and spread rapidly
and could explode even further so all the local counties in and around Arkansan the fire
departments were alerted. By the time the fire engines came in the blaze was almost out of
control. The CEO of the company was standing and he was panicking and he called all the fire
chiefs and he said „inside that plant in my office there is a safe and in that safe are supersensitive
documents which include the chemical formulas and I must have that. I don‟t care if the plant
burns down I will build another but whichever fire chief goes in and brings that safe I will give
you ½ Million dollars‟. All the chiefs went back to their teams to work out a strategy of how they
could get it out and they tried to get in there but they couldn‟t as the door was just too strong.
Suddenly a sound of another fire truck came louder and louder and was coming in. It was a 1930
style fire engine and it came rushing in all through without stopping and went crashing through
the main entrance and goes right into the middle of the burning factory. Everyone is shocked,
then after sometime they bring the fire under control, bring the safe outside and everyone is
coughing. The CEO is stunned and by the time the fire of whole plant is under control. Now the
old fire chief comes out to take the cheque of ½ Million dollars. The media were there and they
asked him it is a lot of money what are you going to do with it and he said first of all I am going
to fix the brakes of the damn truck. It was not meant to go inside. So he did not do it, the truck
did it!

The problem with us today is there are many breaks in our life that prevent us from going
ahead in the speed we need to go in.
   1) Your job – you focus on work 10-12 hours a day so by the time you come home you
are too tired. How can I work for Christ?
   2) TV – Most people will say we work hard the whole day and then we need to relax
and sit in front of the idiot box. You become exactly what you are letting yourself
into. You should let your food burn and exercise.
   3) May be it is your wrong relationship or a wrong habit and you know it is wrong.
You say I am a young man of 42-44 years and let me do what I like doing and let
me finish that, I will get out of it later. It is the same thing at any age. May be we
will be need to remove the brakes in our life and practice hospitality.

MT 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Even if they are strangers
you should welcome them because whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do it
to me. There is no lack on this planet for every single person. Mother Teresa said the
world is in abundance and the only poverty that exists today is in the heart of man. If we

were all to open our hearts a little bit there would be a major achievement. If today
everyone at the Bible study gave Dhs 5 x 80 = Dhs 400. We would be able to give one
meal to 40 people who probably would not have a meal tonight. That is what Mother
Teresa said, there is no lack of food, God has provided everything and the poverty exists
in the hearts of man.

HEB 13:3
Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured,
as though you yourselves were being tortured.

That means you have to put yourself in their shoes and do what they are doing then you
will begin to understand what they are going through. JN 11:35 Jesus began to weep.
Lazarus is dead for around four days and Jesus knew He could raise him from the dead
then why did He weep? He wept because He felt the grief of Mary and Martha because He
shared in their grief and He could share in their joy when he came back again. You need
to be able to put yourself in that person‟s shoe. About a week ago an IT manager in our
preacher‟s office returned to India because his father had passed away and many people
did not know because he went on a Saturday. So a lot of people sent emails to him as
they could not contact him. A week later his manager called him up and asked him how
he was and if everything was OK and they had a conversation. At the end of their
conversation this IT manager tells his manager to please tell Anand I have read his email
and tell him thank you. This man was shocked and he told our preacher a lot of people
sent him emails and why did he chose you. It was because our preacher had also lost his
father a few weeks ago and he knew exactly how he felt and could understand him better
than the rest. That is why it says remember the prisoners as if you were in prison. That is
the only way you will be able to have compassion in your heart.

Colin Gilmore many years ago after he watched the movie „Killing Fields‟ about Khmer
Rouge in Cambodia and he saw the mines that were put in the fields and children being
blown apart and men and women working in the fields lose a limb, he decided to take a
mission to Cambodia and he hired people who were willing to work in Cambodia but it
was not easy. These people had to be understood and treated differently. There were
about 40 people whom he finally recruited but he said I am not confirming that you will
all go with me and he put them to a test for a week. He took them to the remotest part
of the jungles because that is where they would be living in Cambodia, for one week. He
also got them to sit down with their legs behind and he strapped them with a rope and he
made them feel incapacitated for one hour, three hours and slowly people started to
leave and there remained only three of them whom he took with him. Unless you can
understand the pain that they are going through, unless you can understand what is
happening to them how you can reach out to these people. It is not just providing for
them, it is the feeling from the inside. When someone is born with a disability the person
is not as incapacitated because that person has lost it from birth and is able to live with
it from birth as they do not know any other way and you do not have so much of an issue.
The problem is when you have all your limbs and when you lose it and these are the ones
who find it hard to cope with it. You must understand what is really going through their
minds, you have to understand and only then can you give of yourself. You should feel as
if you are suffering with them. MT 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion
for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Did they tell Him that? No, He felt how lost these people were because He could put

Himself in their shoes. Jesus of Nazareth knows exactly what we go through and that is
the reason why He is telling you in Heb 13:5 “I will never leave you or forsake you.”
Your heavenly Father knows what you want already just work through He know how to
take care of it. MT 6:33 Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and
all these things will be given to you as well.

HEB 13:4
Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge
fornicators and adulterers.

In v/s 1 – it was brotherly love, v/s 2 hospitality, v/s 3 empathy and compassion and now
in verse 4 he talks about purity of heart. EXO 20 gives us God‟s commandments, 1-3 had
to do with God the remaining 7 was to do with man. It says do not commit adultery and
God will judge the sexually immoral. Even those who consider themselves as unmarried
are all married, God is your Maker, He is your Husband and we are His bride. Adultery in
the Bible is not just sexual immorality it is when you prostitute your own flesh, when you
mix something impure with the pure it is adultery, not just human relationship. Adultery
is mixing anything impure with the pure or of a lesser value. Metal when it is mixed with
another metal is adulterated, it is an impure form so any product, any life style you take
what is pure and let it mix it with less pure is adultery. Faith can also be made impure.
HOS 1:2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, “Go,
take for yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land
commits great whoredom by forsaking the LORD.” This was a man of God who was told
to take an adulterous wife and have children who will be considered children of the
unfaithful. The man of God is now in a relationship with an adulterous person and that is
for the people of Israel to understand that they had departed from God and turned away
from Him and that also is adultery. God was speaking to the people of Israel and He was
speaking through the prophet. What is spoken here is not just physical life but also the
spiritual life of adultery. - the dilution of your faith by settling for something less than
the one and true God. EPH 5:24-25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved
the church and gave himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her
with the washing of water by the word so as to present the church to Himself in
splendour, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind – yes so that she may be
holy and without blemish. The church is the bride of Christ and that bride Christ gave
Himself up for a radiant church. There is no one who is not married so whether it is
physical or not it could be a spiritual act of adultery. God is asking us to be pure in our
faith and pure in our deeds as well.

HEB 13:5-6
Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will
never leave you or forsake you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be
afraid. What can anyone do to me?”

This particular scripture has been greatly misunderstood by many people. God is not
against you doing well in life and being rich but God is against your being rich when that
makes you rich in the things of the world and poor towards God. MT 6:19-21 Do not
store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consumes and
where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. If God is first in your life
you can have 100 million $ in your bank but you will have God. The point is not about
whether you should have money or not, the point is not about whether you should drive a
Toyota or a Mercedes. The point is who is first in your life always. God will always be
first. MT 6:24 No one can serve two masters for a slave will either hate the one and
love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve
God and wealth.

In MK 10 in the story of the rich man who comes to Jesus and asks what must I do to get
eternal life? Jesus said, you have the commandments and he said these I have kept. MK
10:21. It is an unbelievable scripture. Jesus is going to tell him the one thing he cannot
give up. MK 10:21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go,
sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; then come follow me. Jesus knows that is moment he is going to turn his back
on Jesus and Jesus looks at him and loves him. MK 10:22 When he heard this, he was
shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. He has kept all the
commandment but he has not loved God more than money. He is ready to give up his
ways for temporary wealth but he is not ready to give up his wealth for eternity with
God. How hard it is for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. MK 10:29-30 Jesus
said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or
mother or father or children or field, for my sake and for the sake of the good news,
who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age – and in the age to come eternal
life.” You must be willing to give up everything to get much more because God trusts you
with a lot but your love must be for God first and then it will happen. JN 10:10 I came
that they may have life, and have it abundantly. Be abundant in every area and in
your every relationship with God and if your relationship with God comes first no matter
what blessings come your way God will always be first and nothing will go wrong in your
life. JOB 42 tells us that the Lord God blessed the latter part of his life more than the
first and he was blessed with more than what he lost. MAL 3:10 Bring the full tithe into
the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test,
says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour
down for you an over-flowing blessing. It is God‟s promise but you must do what you
have to do.

Story: A story is told of a little girl who went with her mother to the grocery store and they
finished shopping and came to the counter to pay and there was a big jar of candies. The little
girl loved candies so she is looking at the candy jar and the storekeeper tells her to take as many
candies as she wants but she puts her hands at the back and she does not take it. The
storekeeper told her it is alright to take as much as she wants but she said no. Her mum kept
telling the girl go ahead and take it, it is your favourite candy. So finally the storekeeper said
don‟t worry and he put his hand inside the jar and took out a handful and she immediately put
her hand out. When she left the store the mum said „sweetheart I know you love candy, why did
you not put your hand in and take it?‟ She said because his hands are bigger than mine.

That is what God will do for you and me, let Him do it. The problem is we want to get in
and do things ourselves.

God said keep yourselves free from the love of money. The biggest problem with most
people today is not with the money but their worry about how to get some more money.

We are always worried about the bills to pay, kids school, rent to pay, car loan, and you
worry, worry, and worry all the time. The reason why people have their life span
reduced is stress related to money matters. Stress related to money matters cost the UK
two billion work hours last year, lost because people were sick, because they were
worried about inside. Let God be first in your life and see how things will change. ISA
49:15 Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of
her womb? Even these may forget, yet, I will not forget you. MT 28:320 And
remember, I am with you always, to the end of age.

   1) Love one another with brotherly love.
   2) Be hospitable to strangers not just to the ones you know.
   3) Remember those in prison; share in the suffering of others.
   4) Be pure and do not get into adultery of any sort, physical, spiritual or otherwise.
   5) Free yourself from the love of money. Feel it in the love of God, be richer in God
and everything will come to you. God said, I will never leave you, I will never
      forsake you.
