							Visimation QuotePix™:
Creating Cable and Wiring Diagrams
Overview
The QuotePix Cable and Wiring templates are designed to facilitate the drawing and estimation of wiring
systems. The set contains:

    1. Cable and Wiring Plan View.vst – For inserting cables into floor plans
    2. Cable and Wiring Schematic.vst – For wiring schematics with details such as device terminations
    3. Cable and Wiring Estimate.xlt – Excel template for generating quantities and associated prices
    4. Cable and Wiring Bill of Materials – Excel template for generating quantities without prices

The Visio Templates will open the Cable and Wiring Visio stencil containing special shapes:

For wiring diagrams to show 2 contact device connections. Use with
                  corresponding Wire End shape.

For wiring diagrams to show 4 contact device connections. Use with
                  corresponding Wire End shape.

For wiring diagrams to show 6 contact device connections. Use with
                  corresponding Wire End shape.
Use this shape to connect cable to the corresponding Contact Device shape.
Modify the configuration by moving yellow shape handles.

Use this shape to add extra wire to your design by entering a manual length

Use this special Visio connector shape to add cables to your drawing that
                  automatically calculate their own length.

Entering Project Information
To begin a new design, select QuotePix > New Document and choose the Cable and Wiring Plan View
or Schematic template to begin. The QuotePix Project Data dialog will appear with a set of default
information fields. Note the Tax Rate field towards the bottom. This is used to add tax to your project
estimate in the Excel Cable and Wiring Estimate report.

You can modify the project information box by clicking Define and using the various fields and buttons
to create the desired layout:

Adding Cables to a plan
You can create a floor plan by inserting a CAD object from a DWG or DXF file and use it as a background
for drawing your wiring. You can also use Visio’s floor planning templates to create your plan from Visio
shapes for walls, doors, windows, etc. Please refer to Visio’s documentation for how to perform these
tasks.

There are several ways to add cabling to your plan.

1. Use the special cable shapes on the stencil

To add cabling with these special shapes, drag one of the cable shapes that automatically calculates its
own length. Size it to the length you need by dragging its ends. The line defaults to an “L” shape but you
can manipulate the line’s behavior by right-clicking on it and choosing another option. Enter descriptive
information into the Shape Data window such as shown below. Note that the Wire ID will appear at
each end of the cable. You can move the text with the yellow control handle. The wire Type will also
appear at intervals along the cable length. The Shape Data field Length shows the calculated length.
The units will adjust to the units set in your drawing file under File > Page Setup.

To add additional segments to the initial segment, drag another cable shape and snap its end to the end
of the first segment. You can ease this process by selecting Tools > Snap & Glue and checking the box
Shape Vertices under the Glue To section of the dialog box. As you drop the new cable shape, it
automatically assumes the same shape data as the previous shape but you can change it as needed.
Assuming you are adding a new segment to the first one, enter the same Wire ID. The new segment will
automatically acquire the data associated with the original segment. QuotePix will calculate the length
of each cable according to its Wire ID so that multiple segments will be combined for purposes of
generating bill of materials reports.

Continue your plan by adding new cables with their respective Wire IDs

2. Use the Line tool and convert it to a cable

With this method, you can use the Visio Line tool to define any line path. Note that to keep the line
continuous, click the start point for the first segment and hold down the mouse button, then move your
cursor to the end of that first segment and release the mouse button. Without moving the mouse, click
again at that end point and repeat the process for as many segments as you need.

Once your line is complete, right click with the line selected and choose “Convert To Cable.” This will
convert the line to the same kind of cable as the special shapes on the stencil and you can enter Wire ID
and Type as well as other information. You can also manipulate the vertices and layout of the line by
using the Pencil tool. See Visio Help for more information on working with lines and the Pencil tool.

3. Including Additional Cable

The stencil contains special shapes for adding vertical cable lengths manually. Drag a Rise or Drop shape
to a cable end where it will glue to the end of the wire if you are zoomed in close enough to activate the
glue. Enter the vertical length and Wire ID.

You can use the Extra Wire shape to add miscellaneous lengths to the plan to ensure that enough cable
is included in your bill of materials and estimates. The length is also entered manually.

Using Device Connector Shapes
If you wish to show the cable connections to devices, you may use the 2, 4, and 6 Contact Device shapes
and their corresponding Wire End shapes.

These shapes have special features that you can discover by moving the yellow control handles and also
by selecting options in the pull-down lists that appear when you click in a Shape Data field such as Show
Top Pigtail. For example, on the Wire End shapes you can move the wire colors to different terminals
on the Contact Device shape.

Generating Reports in Excel
To generate a bill of materials or estimate report, select QuotePix > Reports to open the dialog.

The right side of the box under Match report fields with BOM items enables you to modify the QuotePix
calculation fields to fields in your Excel template. These selections have been pre-set in the wiring
template to produce the correct results. You would only need to modify these if you were creating your
own templates.

On the left side of the dialog, check one or more report names that you want to produce, and click
Generate. The report(s) will appear in Excel. Note that these reports are based on the Excel templates
that are in the My Documents\My QuotePix Templates folder. You can open these templates in Excel to
modify the company and customer information.

WARNING: Do not modify the cells under the headings Wire ID, Type, etc. because they contain
formulae for calculations.
