Online Video: How To Destroy a Car Compactor
Amateur video of four men driving a Jeep in a junkyard. They take the Jeep to the yard‟s car compactor. They push a car out from beneath the compactor‟s press. They replace the car with the Jeep. They hide. Soon, the compactor starts to run. The press comes down. When it meets the top of the Jeep, the press stops. It continues trying to compact the Jeep, but cannot. The compactor starts to smoke and shake. It crashes and falls apart. The young men cheer and congratulate each other. They hear voices yelling. They run back to the Jeep and make their escape. The junkyard attendants chase them but lose them when the Jeep escapes the yard.

Three other men are huddled around the door, watching. A: “What‟s wrong with Bill?” B: “Maybe his dog died.” C: “He doesn‟t have a dog.” B: “Oh, then maybe he got powned by a noob.” C: “That‟s ridiculous.” A: “Yeah, Bill would never get powned by a noob.” B: (Very animated) “Maybe an alien face hugger got him,” he throws his hands around his neck, “and any second now, one will come PSSHT! busting out of his chest and PSSHT! GAH!” He mimics an alien coming out of his chest with his hands and reels back. The other two stare at him. B: “What, it could happen.” Cut to an hour earlier in front of the office vending machine. Bill is eying a Snickers. He takes out his only dollar bill, but it is ripped and wrinkled. The machine will not accept the bill. He groans and bangs his head against the glass.

www.globalislocal.com
The website will consist of two strings of information, browsed by the visitor through a graphical interface, that describe, simultaneously, the journey of the coffee bean from fruit to cup and the environmental, social, and economical relationships between the communities that grow Starbucks coffee and the communities that consume the coffee. These two strings of information will correspond. For example, the first discussion would be of planting. The first string, dubbed “Bean Life,” would discuss how and why the beans are chosen and planted. The corresponding second string, dubbed here “Community Relations,” would talk about how the environmentally sound planting practice of producing shade grown coffee benefits both of these seemingly disparate communities. In the growing community, by allowing farmers to simultaneously grow multiple types of indigenous crops on the same land, shade growing allows them to increase their yearly income. The consuming community, by recognizing that global environmental stability is heavily influenced by the health of smaller natural environments (i.e. the more healthy indigenous vegetation, allowed by the process of growing shade grown coffee, the more healthy the broader global environment).
Subsequent strings would follow the BL through its purchasing, roasting, brewing, and, ultimately, presentation to the consumer. The corresponding CR commentary would cover the use of Arabica beans for their resilience in higher altitudes (which greatly reduces the risk of pests, and thus, the need for pesticides) and fair purchasing, which includes, through CAFÉ Practices, assured access to clean water, projects that seek to improve or provide education, and fair pay. This strengthens and sustains local growing communities and their economies, inherently assuring a long standing supply of quality coffees in consuming communities while also reducing strain on the global economy. Each aspect of the BL would correspond with one aspect of how the production and purchasing methods utilized by Starbucks benefit both communities mutually. Ultimately, www.globalislocal.com would identify a positive relationship between seemingly socially and economically unrelated communities, while consistently associating this relationship with Starbucks‟s commitment to fair purchasing, healthy communities here and abroad, and quality and environmentally friendly products.
