         This past weekend, Saint Maur and YIS co-hosted the Kansai-Kanto JV Invitational
              Basketball Tournament all day Friday and Saturday. There were many teams
                from Tokyo-Yokohama and Kansai areas. Our PSG –Sports Booster Group of
                parents went all out to have a large supply of tasty foods and snacks on hand
                for both Friday and Saturday for our own athletes, students and those from
                other schools. The coaches from the other schools sincerely thanked us for
               the provisions. Thanks to all the parents who worked long hours in providing
the food and snacks and drinks.

                                 MEDICAL EXAM KUDOS

We sincerely wish to thank our parents and staff members who worked so diligently to have
the annual event turn out so successfully. We are required to have the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th
grade students have a thorough physical exam every year. Many parents volunteered their
valuable expertise and time. Thanks so much, parents and school nurses!

                       CPR: (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)

                            Every parent should know how and when to administer CPR.
                            When performed correctly, CPR can save a child's life by
                            restoring breathing and circulation until advanced life support
                            can be given by health care providers. The letters in CPR stand
                            for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a combination of rescue
                            breathing     (mouth-to-mouth     resuscitation)    and   chest
                            compressions. CPR can restore circulation of oxygen-rich blood
                            to the brain. Reading about CPR and learning when it's needed
                            will give you a basic understanding of the concept and
                            procedure, but it's strongly recommended that you learn the
                            basics of how to perform CPR by taking a course. Please bring a
                            pen and wear loose fitting clothing.

                             NOTE: Limited to the first 20 applicants. Deadline to
                             sign-up is Thursday, January 31.

                            UNIVERSITY ACCEPTANCE NEWS
The most rewarding time of the year has begun, as seniors receive news that their hard work
has paid off with an offer of admission to one of the colleges and universities where they have
applied. Jerome Bellis has been accepted to his first choice, Westmont College in Santa
Barbara, California. Yasuki Hagiwara has been accepted to Western Michigan University
in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Yoshimi Mita has been accepted to American Intercontinental
University in London. Kiho Yutaka has been accepted to the School of Music at Indiana
University in Bloomington, Indiana. Congratulations, Jerome, Yasuki, Yoshimi, and Kiho!

                                  OPEN CAMPUS DATES
Temple University Japan, located in Minato-ku, Tōkyō, frequently arranges Open Campus
days when students (especially in Grades 12 and 11) and their parents can visit the Azabu
and Mita campus sites, experience college lectures, learn about Temple’s advantages, and
confer with the admissions counselors. This is particularly useful when matched with
campus visits to other universities in the Tōkyō area, such as Sophia, ICU, and Waseda. The
next Open Campus dates will be on 16 February, 15 March, and 12 April. These are all on
Saturdays, beginning at 1:00 pm. In addition, there will be an evening session at 6:00 pm on
Wednesday, 20 February. For further information in English or Japanese, consult the

                               SUMMER COLLEGE TOURS
College Visits is a company which organizes tours of North American universities and
college campuses each summer. Several Saint Maur students have gone on these tours in the
past, which include guided visits to a number of universities within a specific region (such as
California, the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Southeast, or eastern Canada). They range
from five days (ten campuses) to eight days (fifteen campuses), and the price range for most
tours is from approximately US $1000 to $1600. This includes ground transportation,
lodging, meals, meetings with admissions staff, materials, and activities, but not airfare to
and from Japan. For further information, please contact Mr. Scoggins at the College

Information about Summer Programs Abroad:
As information on various summer programs arrive, posters will be displayed on the bulletin
boards in the high school hallway, and application forms and brochures will be placed in the
“Summer Programs” box in the room that houses various college catalogues just outside of
Computer Lab 2 on the library floor. Students and parents are encouraged to look at
available information. They are free to take any brochure and application form for which we
have multiple copies. Requests for school records or teacher recommendations for such
programs should be made to Mrs. Endo, Director of Student Services. Please note that after
the necessary request forms are submitted by the student or parent, the school may require
up to 10 working days to prepare and have ready for collection/mailing school records,
transcripts, recommendation letters. You are advised to make summer plans early for your
children, as some of the competitive programs have early deadlines and certain courses for
even those that have rolling admission get filled up quickly.

Summer Discovery Programs: Mr. Jimmy Musiker of the Summer Discovery/Jr.
Discovery/College Discovery Enrichment Programs will be visiting Saint Maur to meet with
any interested middle school and high school students and their parents.

ASA (Academic Study Associates) Programs: The ASA Programs which have also been
popular with our high school students, have launched a new website with updated

Beef Stew

           12ML                 Olive Oil
             50G                Carrots

             50G                Potato

In a large pot sauté the onions, garlic, dry herbs, diced carrots, diced celery, potatoes and
black pepper. Add the tomato paste and cook for 5 minutes, add the water, crushed
tomatoes, beef consommé and salt and bring to the boil.
In a large colander wash the blood from the beef and drain, coat the beef in the plain flour and
some seasoning and seal the meat in the oven, flat top grill, or brat pan and stir into the
simmering liquid. Simmer until beef is tender and add the corn starch to thicken, add the
parsley and serve. Serves 4.

Environmental affairs
Just like you Cezars kitchen is concerned about the health of not just your kids but your
planet as well. We have recently taken a number of steps that will contribute to making things
better. A few small changes will come together to make a big improvement such
as: promoting the separation of lunch waste, reusable chopsticks, restricting the use of paper
plates and bowls where possible, working with suppliers to reduce the amount of packaging,
using the minimum amount of chemicals and turning equipment off when not in use are
some of the initiatives aimed at minimizing our impact on the planet PayPams.
PayPams is a free service provided by Cezars Kitchen for parents who enroll in this online
service to view their children's spending habits in the cafeteria. If you have not yet set-up your
personal account, please do so by selecting the REGISTER NOW Button on the PayPams
home page. It’s a no hassle way to monitor your child's lunch purchases.

                                Daddy Daughter Dance

The “Daddy Daughter Dance” is an annual event supported by the school communities of YIS
and St. Maur. It is a celebration of the special relationship between fathers and daughters. It
is also a charity event. The evening supports the schools’ chosen charities.
