This second edition of Building a Successful Biodiesel Business includes three com-
pletely new chapters, and comes at an exciting time for everyone in the biodiesel
industry. Interest in biodiesel is exploding. Biodiesel sells as fast as producers can
make it, and in many cases, it is priced below petroleum-based diesel fuel.
Investors and entrepreneurs are eager to get an early start in this growth oppor-
tunity. Recent developments in the industry have re-emphasized the importance
of fuel quality to the continued growth of biodiesel. Chapters on biodiesel speci-
fications, test methods, and engine requirements will help clarify quality issues. Profitability of biodiesel pro-
duction will continue for those companies that control costs, build efficient plants, stay abreast of new devel-
opments, and capture a supply of feedstock.

M.E. Chevreul’s “Recherches chimiques sur les corps gras d’origine animale” is
important not only because it established the chemical nature of fats, but
because it also conveys a historical perspective. Berzelius commented that
Chevreul’s work should serve as a model for young chemists wishing to do
research in any field of chemistry and went on to say that Chevreul’s investiga-
tions were the most complete and best executed series of experiments in all of chemistry. The translator of this
first English language edition has produced a formidable work and valuable contribution to the literature.

The Fatty Acids in Health Promotion and Disease Causation book has four main focuses and sections. First there
is a significant focus on heart disease and the role of fatty acids in its prevention as well as causation.
Information on special populations, Native Americans, stroke and cardiac injury are examples of areas where
fatty acids play a key role. The second main focus is on body composition, diabetic disease and health promo-
tion, and actions after transformation by oxidation. The third section is on fatty acids in health promotion per
se. This includes cancer, intestinal microbes, and membrane functions. Finally the actions of omega-3 fatty
acids, the presumed health-promoting ones, are extensively investigated by experts from around the world.

Tocotrienols
Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols
Ronald Watson and Victor Preedy, Editors
2008. Hardbound. 421 pages. ISBN 978-1-420080-37-7. Product code 225
List: $175 • AOCS Member: $135
This volume goes far beyond the usual considerations of vitamin E to focus on
tocotrienols, which, along with tocopherols constitute the bioactive ingredients of
vitamin E. Recognized as potent antioxidants, tocotrienols are associated with reduc-
ing cholesterol, suppressing tumors, and protecting the heart against oxidative stress.
Compiling contributions from leading researchers, this book builds upon a recent
symposium sponsored by the AOCS. It examines sources, discusses isolation, and delves into the biochemistry
and chemistry of tocotrienols. The book then takes a comprehensive look at their role in health and disease,
with a special focus on heart disease.

Dietary fat is an important source of nutrients; it plays a key role in all aspects of
human health. However, not all fats are created equal. In fact, excess intake of certain
types of fats is associated with the development of many chronic diseases. Dietary Fats
and Risk of Chronic Disease is based on an AOCS-JOCS Joint Symposium on
Bioscience, and many of the chapters were developed from key sessions at the
Symposium. It covers the effects that different dietary fats have on the development
of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, inflammation, and immune functions.
Those involved in health and nutrition, including researchers, physicians, formulators, and dietitians will ben-
efit from the information in this book.

A staple Mediterranean region food for thousands of years, olive oil is now becoming popular among con-
sumers all over the world. More and more research suggests its healthful benefits including reducing risk of
coronary heart disease.
Because of the increasing demand and high cost of producing virgin olive oil, it is more expensive than other
vegetable oils. As a result, there is temptation to mix it with less expensive vegetable oils and olive residue oils.
An inform article mentioned that “the adulteration of extra virgin olive oil with cheap, highly-refined hazelnut
oil imported from Turkey” has been reported. “The presence of a refined oil, especially hazelnut oil, may be
potentially dangerous to consumers’ health because of the chemical changes of the oil compounds caused by
the refining process” (inform, vol 17, August 2006).
Olive Oil, edited by Dimitrios Boskou, offers insight to the most important aspects of chemistry, technology,
quality, analysis, and biological importance of olive oil. The book offers an overview as well as topics that will
help readers address more specific problems, such as “Analysis and Authentication.”

M.E. Chevreul’s “Recherches chimiques sur les corps gras d’origine animale” is impor-
tant not only because it established the chemical nature of fats, but because it also
conveys a historical perspective. Berzelius commented that Chevreul’s work should
serve as a model for young chemists wishing to do research in any field of chemistry
and went on to say that Chevreul’s investigations were the most complete and best executed series of experi-
ments in all of chemistry. The translator of this first English language edition has produced a formidable work
and valuable contribution to the literature.
CONTENTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING
• Definitions of Concepts and Description of the Elemental Analysis of Organic Compounds
• Chevreul-discovered Fatty Acids and their Salts - Properties, Occurrence, and his System of Nomenclature;
  Most are Still Used Today
• Methods to Prepare the Fatty Materials, Their Saponification, and the Purification of the Various Fatty Acids

This monograph describes the most common gas chromatographic and infrared spec-
troscopic official methods required for the determination of trans fatty acids for food
labeling purposes. The authors review the current status and limitations of the lat-
est methods and discuss the numerous factors that may have an impact on accura-
cy and precision. The extensive discussion informs current researchers and analysts in nutrition and food
chemistry and technology and should provide a stimulus for improving trans fatty acid methodologies.

During the past several years, distillers dried grains with solubles (known as DDGS) has become a major feed ingre-
dient in North America, and its use is increasing globally. During processing, corn is fermented to produce alco-
hol, which is then mixed with gasoline and serves as an oxygenate. While it is sometimes debated whether ethanol
produces a net gain in fuel, and whether this is sustainable, there is no question that millions of tons of non-fer-
mented residues are now available to the feed industry in the form of DDGS. As might be expected, a tremendous
amount of research has been conducted in a short period of time to determine the suitability of DDGS for various
end uses. The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive summary of this information.

As in Patterson’s first edition, discussion is not confined to vegetable oils, and the hydrogenation technique is
considered in detail. The “why” as well as the “how” of hydrogenation are addressed. Written for both pro-
duction staff who need advice on specific problems and personnel who seek directions, if not solutions, the
book offers direct practical advice along with explanations of why changes occur as they do. The glossary of
technical terms contains a more detailed explanation of some features mentioned throughout the text.

This book provides an overview of biobased surfactants currently under develop-
ment. The first chapter provides an overview of biobased surfactant research and
development in the industrial sector, including synthesis, applications, and current trends and directions in
the field. Several chapters describe the current state-of-the-art of biosurfactants, natural amphiphiles synthe-
sized by microorganisms, including their synthesis and applications. An additional focus area is on the appli-
cation of biobased surfactants as lung surfactants. Many chapters involve the chemical and enzymatic synthe-
sis and applications of biobased surfactants consisting of polyols derived from nature, particularly, mono- and
di-saccharides, and amino acids. The employment of enzymes as catalysts to direct the synthesis of biobased
surfactants is particularly attractive due the reduction of solvent and energy use during the surfactants’ manu-
facture, and the reduction of purification costs and formation of impurities and by-products.

Today, the bar soap industry is thriving in much of the world, especially in the develop-
ing countries. There, toilet and laundry bar soaps are produced in large quantities and there are many producers
besides the large multinational firms. In the rest of the world “boutique” soap manufacturers are producing elite bar
soaps for a select group of healthy “green” consumers. These soap producers as well as anyone with an interest in
soap technology will benefit from the new AOCS Press Soap Manufacturing Technology book. Never before has there
been a collection of soap-related information from AOCS SODEOPEC Conferences of 2006 and 2008
(SODEOPEC=Soaps and Detergents, Oleochemicals, and Personal Care Products). The pivotal information from
these meetings appears in this indispensable book.

“….Rather than limit scientific discourse to curt journal papers, researchers should
embrace the book as another means of expressing not only their insights but also their
visions. Through the various styles of writing, all aspects of science can be explored and
laid out for posterity and learning. The expansiveness of a book allows sophisticated
arguments to be put forward and widely debated; new ideas that cross disciplinary
boundaries can more readily be shared and worked through.”

Over 2,000 separate compounds were grouped into seven broad classes of amphipathic
molecules that have known biological activities, with potential pharmaceutical, medicinal, cosmetic, and food sci-
ence applications. Since the applications of the compounds themselves cut across many different scientific and
industrial disciplines, this will be useful for those in the chemical, biochemical, and medical fields. This conven-
ient, fully searchable compilation is a great convenience in obtaining references and comments on potential appli-
cations of these more than 2,000 interesting compounds. This CD incorporates new text-searching software
allowing easy and convenient access to information.

the Superintendents Association. The Gazetteer has
held true to this mandate for more than 100 years
and has continued to be a great source of informa-

tent includes oilseed news pertinent to the world-
wide processing industry, company and personnel
news, industry meetings, and feature articles cover-
ing a broad variety of topics, including plant and
equipment maintenance, safety, environmental con-
cerns, government regulations, and crop projections.
