2007 School Choice Intra-District Open Enrollment Information Bulletin
The School Choice policy of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) allows parents who reside
within SVUSD boundaries to choose any school in the district for their child to attend if space is available at the
“school of choice” (see chart on opposite page). Parents of students who reside within the attendance
boundaries of a school do not need to complete a School Choice application to attend their school of
residence. If parents are unsure of the school of assignment based on residence, the SVUSD website
may be accessed at http://www.svusd.k12.ca.us/maps/ or the SVUSD Business Services Department may
be contacted at (949) 580-3335.
It should be noted that current enrollment has limited the space available for applicants in all grades K-
12. However, parents who reside within SVUSD boundaries and who are interested in exploring the option of
School Choice are encouraged to review the information contained in this bulletin and to obtain a School Choice
brochure which is available at each school and at the SVUSD District office beginning January 16, 2007. The
School Choice brochure contains information and procedures related to the School Choice process. As per
SVUSD Board Policies and California law, requests for placement at a “school of choice” will not be processed on
a first-come, first-served basis, but will be approved using an unbiased random selection process and only if
space is available at the school requested. Transportation to a “school of choice” will be the responsibility
of the parents.
Parents residing outside SVUSD boundaries and requesting that their child attend an SVUSD school rather
than a school in their school district need to obtain an Inter-District transfer request from their school district
of residence. SVUSD School Choice Applications are available only to SVUSD residents.

                                         SVUSD District-wide Programs
SVUSD elementary schools provide an outstanding basic core curriculum for all students. At the intermediate
level, all four schools provide a strong core curriculum with challenging course offerings for honors students as
well as interesting and motivating electives for all students. SVUSD high schools offer a comprehensive
academic program enhanced at each site by a variety of athletic opportunities and student activities. Parents of
student athletes may learn more about CIF regulations regarding students’ eligibility for sports participation
through information contained in the SVUSD School Choice Brochure. Parents of students who reside within
the attendance boundaries of a school do not need to complete a School Choice application to attend
their school of residence.

Projected Space Available in SVUSD Elementary Schools

The District’s goal is to provide appropriate instructional spaces for all programs in district-owned facilities rather
than renting interim housing facilities. Based on current enrollment, projected enrollment, and instructional
programs, it is anticipated that many elementary schools throughout the district will be filled to capacity in district-
owned facilities, even with declining enrollment at the elementary level. At each grade level at each elementary
school where space is not available, applicants will be placed on waiting lists. Due to staffing and facility
implications, it is anticipated that decisions about School Choice waiting lists will not be finalized until
late summer 2007.

Projected Space Available in SVUSD Secondary Schools
While there will be an enrollment decline at the elementary level in 2007-2008, enrollment at the intermediate
schools and high schools remains at capacity. It is projected that intermediate and high schools throughout the
district will have very few transfer opportunities available for the 2007-2008 school year based on current
enrollment, projected enrollment, instructional programs, and facility capacity. The goal continues to be
maximizing housing students in district-owned facilities rather than renting interim housing facilities.

Optional Attendance Areas and Assignments to Schools of Residency
In most cases students are assigned to one specific school site based on their resident address. Areas of
assignment to specific school sites are called attendance grids. Students matriculate from one school to another
at each level based on their attendance grid. In a few instances, some attendance grids, although assigned to
one school, have an option for school attendance at another school at some grade levels. If a student resides in
an attendance grid with a school attendance option, parents must declare the choice they are exercising by
completing and submitting a School Choice application.
Parents may verify that they reside in an optional attendance area by calling SVUSD Business Services
Department (949-580-3335). To exercise the option (other than the school of assignment) parents must submit a
School Choice application. Through the School Choice application, students will be granted residence at the
optional school if they reside in a designated optional attendance area.
When the School Choice application deadline has passed, parents may apply for a transfer between schools by
submitting a transfer request. This includes both Intra-District requests (from district residents requesting a
school after the School Choice application deadline has passed) and Inter-District requests (from residents of
other school districts). Transfer requests will be considered on a space available basis, after Intra-District School
Choice requests. Equal consideration will be given to both Intra-District and Inter-District requests on the basis of
space and staff availability.
                         Textbook Adoption Information For Parents

During the current school year, textbooks for the subjects and grade levels listed below are being
reviewed and will be recommended for adoption for use in SVUSD schools beginning with the 2007-2008
school year. Materials being considered for adoption will be on display beginning February 2007 in the
SVUSD Textbook Display Room. It is anticipated that textbook recommendations will be finalized March -
May 2007. Input from parents and community members is encouraged and is a valuable part of the
adoption process.
Parents, staff and community members are invited to visit the SVUSD Textbook Display Room in
February 2007, review the materials being considered for adoption, and complete feedback forms.
Please contact your school's principal or call 580–3223 if there are questions.

                            Student Attendance Makes a Difference!

Each year, student absences in SVUSD contribute to millions of dollars in lost revenue. Just a small
improvement in student attendance would generate thousands of dollars for our District.
For example, an increase of 1% district-wide would mean an additional

Improved student attendance works for everyone. A child's success in school depends on having a solid
educational background, one that can only be gained through regular school attendance.
Please choose to make good school attendance a priority.
