Harvard Book Prize 2006-7 The 2007 Harvard Book Prize selection is Public Philosophy: Essays on Morality in Politics by Michael J. Sandel, Harvard Professor of Government. Some of you may have taken Sandel‟s phenomenally popular course - Justice – which has enrolled over 12,000 students since it began in 1980. Public Philosophy is a collection of essays, many of which were previously published in the New Republic, which explores the complex ethical dilemmas which surround many issues on today‟s political landscape such as abortion, gay rights, and Clinton‟s artful dodging of the truth in the Lewinsky affair. Sandel‟s very readable text teases out the thorny aspects of contemporary issues, engaging the reader to come to terms with their moral complexity. This book is ideal for our targeted audience of Lower Sixth Form students – it tackles important issues in a thought provoking way. The Harvard Book Prize program was started by Harvard alumni in 1910 to encourage talented students to apply to Harvard College. Today more than 1700 Harvard Prize books are awarded annually at home and abroad, including over 100 in the United Kingdom. Every year the club selects a book with some Harvard connection for donation to state and independent secondary schools. The Prize is awarded to “an outstanding student in the penultimate year, academically excellent, with exceptional personal qualities, who makes a significant contribution to school or community.” The objective of the programme is to raise Harvard‟s visibility amongst UK secondary schools and attract qualified students to apply for admission. Many UK students have heard of Harvard but they often are not familiar with what it means to be an undergraduate at Harvard, or at any American university, and may not be aware of the availability of financial aid. The program is run by the Schools & Scholarship Committee and overseen by Hattie Hartman (hattiehartman@post.harvard.edu). Interested club members can 'adopt' a school by underwriting its book prize for a contribution of £30/year. If interested, sponsors may also serve as ambassadors for Harvard at their „adopted‟ schools by awarding the prize in person and/or getting to know the staff member responsible for university admissions in order to encourage qualified students to apply.
