        INTRODUCTION
        The TempShield tempering valve has evolved from the market demand for a reliable, versatile and cost
        effective device for limiting outlet temperature of hot water systems.
        Available in two fitting sizes, 15mm & 20mm, the TempShield is installed using copper olive connections.
        No soldering or extra fittings are needed. The TempShield valve may be mounted at any angle, either at
        the water heater or remote in the system.
        TempShield valves are available configured in a stainless steel cabinet for easy installation and
        maintenance on multiple installation sites such as apartment houses, office blocks etc.


        STANDARDS AND PRODUCT APPROVALS
        QEC LICENCE
        Ryemetal’s head office and manufacturing facility is located in Melbourne. Ryemetal is accredited as a
        quality endorsed company, maintaining QEC licence number 953 to the international QEC Standard ISO
        9001.




        PRODUCT APPROVALS
        The TempShield tempering valve is approved to AS4032.2. All brass fittings supplied with the TempShield
        tempering valve are manufactured to AS3688.




2 - Tempering Valves
THE RISK
Each year in Australia approximately 400 young children are admitted to hospital after receiving a scald
from hot tap water. In Victoria, four children each week, under five years of age, present to hospital
emergency departments with hot tap scalds and one or two of these children require admission (www.dhs.
gov.au).
The majority of these scalds occur in the bathroom. The critical factor in these injuries is the temperature at
which hot water is delivered from the bathroom tap.
Many hot water systems in Australia have thermostats set between 60°C and 70°C.
Should a child be directly exposed to hot tap water within this temperature range, full thickness scalds
(third degree burns) would occur within 1 second. The severity of the burn depends on the hot water
temperature and the length of time the skin is exposed to this water. Setting the hot water outlet
temperature to 50°C extends the time taken for full thickness scalding to 5 minutes (www.wch.sa.gov.au).
Kidsafe Victoria recommend that the temperature of hot tap water in the bathroom should not be above
50°C.


THE SOLUTION
The National Plumbing and Drainage Code requires:
1.6.1 Storage temperature. Hot water shall be stored at a minimum of 60°C so as to inhibit the growth of
legionella bacteria.
1.6.2 Sanitary fixtures delivery temperature. All new hot water installations shall, at the outlet of all
sanitary fixtures used primarily for personal hygiene purposes, deliver hot water not exceeding –
        (a) 45°C for early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools and nursing homes or similar
        facilities for young, aged, sick or disabled persons: and
        (b) 50°C in all other buildings.
NOTE: Compliance with these temperature limits is optional for kitchen sinks and laundry tubs.
In order to comply with this legislation, plumbers installing or maintaining hot water systems must consider
the most practical, reliable and cost effective method of tempering outlet water to the bathroom facilities.
To encompass all these considerations Ryemetal has developed the TempShield tempering valve.

        Numerous variables at installations affect the flow rates at individual fixtures and appliances.
        By calculating the pressure loss through the plumbing system, the available flow can be
        determined.

To determine the available flow rate, find the point where the ‘system pressure loss’ value cuts the
TempShield performance curve and read the corresponding flow rate value.

        INSTALLATION
        Ensure that the correct valve type is selected for the service which the valve is intended to be used with.
        Incorrect selection can result in poor performance, shortened service life and in some circumstances
        failure of the device.
        It is recommended the ratio of supply pressures is controlled to 1:1.Where a pressure control device is
        installed at the water heater, but not controlling the tempering valve cold supply, a pressure reducing
        valve should be fitted to the tempering valve cold inlet. This will allow the 1:1 ratio to be achieved.
        All pipe work and associated fittings, layout etc. must be in accordance with AS3500. Valves not installed
        in accordance with this standard and these installation instructions may result in unsafe performance.
        Hot & cold supply pressures are not to exceed: Static - 1600 kPa, Dynamic - 500 kPa.
        A 1:1 ratio of supply pressures may be achieved through the installation of pressure reducing valves
        and/or pressure limiting valves. The maximum pressure variation allowed at either inlet while still
        maintaining outlet temperature to ± 3°C is ± 10 % from original commissioning pressures.
        The valve must not be installed in conditions where freezing may occur. No heat is to be applied to the
        valve during installation.
        It is recommended that isolation valves be installed at both the hot and cold inlets to allow isolation of
        the valve for maintenance purposes. Where a large volume of water would drain back through the outlet
        pipe upon removal of the tempering valve, it is recommended that an isolation valve also be installed at
        the outlet.
        The tempering valve is to be located as close as practicable to the water heater. A minimum 1 metre
        of pipe is to exist between the tempering valve outlet and the serviced fixtures. This will ensure proper
        mixing of the supply.
        All pipe work is to be flushed to clear debris prior to the tempering valve being installed.
        The inlet joints are copper olive, conetite or flared compression; no tape or sealant is to be used on the
        fittings.

12 - Tempering Valves
SETTING TEMPERATURE
Outlet temperature must be measured at the closest fixture to the valve.
Remove plastic adjustment cover.
Utilizing the special tool supplied with the valve, turn the adjustment spindle clockwise to decrease
temperature or anticlockwise to increase, allowing a full minute of water flow before checking temperature.
When the desired temperature is achieved replace the plastic cap.
Test the thermal shut off operation by running the closest fixture to the valve, using just the tempered outlet,
then closing off the cold supply to the valve. The temperature of the fixture outlet should not rise more than
2- 3°C and for no more than 2 seconds. Normally the water flow will stop.


MAINTENANCE


The TempShield tempering valve should be checked annually. The valve cannot be serviced. Should any
difficulties arise in the operation of the valve it must be replaced.
Ryemetal recommends the TempShield tempering valve be replaced every 5 years to ensure continuous
stable temperature control and fail safe operation.

        WARRANTY
        Valve Warranty

        Ryemetal tempering valves are guaranteed free from manufacturing defects for a period of 24 months, subject to the conditions
        outlined below:

        Subject to the warranty conditions and exclusions set out below, Ryemetal valves are warranted to be free from defects in material
        and/or workmanship for a period of 24 months from date of purchase (proof of purchase required) and if found by Ryemetal to
        be defective will be replaced as set out below. If the valve is sold by a party other than Ryemetal then it is sold by that seller as
        principal and the seller has no authority from Ryemetal to give any additional warranty on behalf of Ryemetal.

        The benefits of this warranty are in addition to all other rights and remedies which the purchaser may have under the Trade
        Practices Act (Cwth) or similar laws of each State and Territory in Australia.

        Warranty Conditions and Exclusions

        Conditions:

        1. The valve must have been installed by a licensed plumber in accordance with the Ryemetal Installation Instructions supplied
        with the valve, and in accordance with the National Plumbing and Drainage Code AS3500 (the Code) current at the date of
        installation and all relevant statutory and local requirements in the State or Territory in which the valve is installed.

        2. Where the valve is installed outside the boundaries of a metropolitan area as defined by Ryemetal the cost of transport
        insurance and travelling shall be the purchaser’s responsibility.

        3. Where the valve comprises part of a hot water system, installation of that system must be in accordance with its manufacturer’s
        recommendations, the Code and all relevant statutory and local States or Territory requirements.

        4. The valve must be returned to Ryemetal together with a fully and correctly completed Ryemetal Warranty Claim Form.

        5. Where the valve is replaced under warranty the replacement valve carries a new warranty as detailed herein.

        Exclusions:

        Replacement work will be carried out as set out in the Ryemetal Warranty above, but the following exclusions may cause the
        warranty to become void, and may incur a service charge including cost of parts where:

        6. Damage has been caused by accident, Acts of God, misuse, incorrect installation, incorrect installation of the hot water system
        of which the valve forms a part or attempts to disassemble the valve.

        7. It is found that there is nothing wrong with the valve.

        8. The failure of the valve is due in part or in whole to faulty manufacture / installation of the hot water system of which the valve
        forms part.

        9. The valve has failed directly or indirectly as a result of excessive water pressure or temperature outside the Guidelines, thermal
        input or corrosive environment.

        10. The valve has failed due to foreign matter either from installation or the water supply.

        11. The failure of the valve is due to scale formation in the waterways of the valve.

        12. The failure of the valve is due in part, or in whole, to installation not in conformance with the requirements of the Code.

        13. It is found the valve has been tampered with.

        Ryemetal reserves the right to change its specifications without prior notice and will not accept liability for any claim arising from
        such change.

        Subject to any statutory provisions to the contrary, claims for damage to furniture, carpets, walls, foundations or any other
        consequential loss either directly or indirectly due to leakage from the valve are also excluded from warranty cover.
