   Vaccination clinics offer rabies prevention

Ridgeland – Area veterinarians are cooperating with local health departments this spring
to sponsor special reduced-cost rabies clinics to vaccinate pet cats and dogs. The shots cost only
   three dollars.
Kim S. Crouse with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Jasper
County Public Health Department said that over 32,000 pets were vaccinated against rabies
during the special clinics statewide last year. Crouse said state law requires that every pet cat and
dog be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. An owner of an unvaccinated cat or
dog more than three months old may be found guilty of a misdemeanor and punished up to the
maximum penalties that may be imposed in magistrate’s court.
Last year, 152 cases of rabies in animals were confirmed by DHEC. Jasper County had
no cases of animal rabies last year. Crouse emphasized that pet owners should make sure their
cats as well as dogs are vaccinated against rabies. Last year, there were 8 cats and 5 dogs
confirmed to be rabid in the state.
Crouse said rabies is fatal to humans. Anyone bitten by a known or suspected rabid
animal must undergo immediate medical treatment to keep the virus from reaching the brain.
Last year, about 400 South Carolinians underwent treatment to prevent rabies.
Crouse said local rabies vaccination clinics will be held at the following locations:

April 17, 2010 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Palmetto Veterinary Hospital, 409 S. Green St, Ridgeland
April 17, 2010 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Riverwalk Animal Hospital, 98 Browns Cove Rd, Ridgeland
April 24, 2010 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Jasper Animal Rescue Mission/SNAC, 1352 Carters Mill Rd, Ridgeland
