and degree offered by University of Colombo, Srilanka. It becomes the first University recognized Degree/Diploma in
India in Family Medicine. Candidates who have completed DFM become eligible to undertake MD Family Medicine.

or Indian Coordinator.

WHAT IS THE NEED?

In India 80 percentage of population is below the poverty line and Health Problems are more for them. Even
Primary Health Care is not effectively offered to them. Family Physician is the backbone of the Health Care
Delivery System of any country more so in a developing country like India. In India 70% of Health Care is
offered by Private sector. The large chunk of General Practitioners is to be well trained and equipped to meet
the Primary Health Care of our country. Today’s Undergraduate curriculum does not include Family Practice
as a subject and hence Young Medical Graduates do not have the knowledge and exposure to Primary Health
Care. This makes them averse to take up General Practices and to settle in rural areas and serve the
downtrodden.

Family practice is not by “Choice but by chance” in India. Strengthening of this specialty will stabilize the
Health Care delivery System of our country and ultimately. Young Medical Graduates will take up Family
Practice as choice and serve in rural areas. Moreover they will offer effective Primary Health Care too, in
addition to getting a satisfaction of being a specialist amidst and today’s arena of Specialist and Super
Specialists in various field of Medicine.

Hence Diploma in Family Medicine has got a definite need in today’s Medical Practice. Since we don’t yet
have an open System in any University for this specialty today we are taking up a foreign Degree and soon
one such will be available from our country itself.
