                                  Statement of interest

        "M. Nasta" Institute of Pneumology is a 665-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital
specialized in diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases, with Pneumology and Thoracic
Surgery Departments. The Institute is also a centre for medical research and education.
       The main activities of the Research Department are:
   Department of Research on Tuberculosis and Other Chronic Pulmonary Diseases
    o improving implementation and surveillance of the National Program of Tuberculosis
    o characteristics of the TB endemics among the vulnerable population groups
    o TB infection risk in unvaccinated cohorts of children
    o surveillance of the M.tuberculosis chemo-resistance at a national level
    o impact of the passive tabagism on the human health; tobacco withdrawal
   Respiratory Physiopathology and Pulmonary Function Tests Department
    o testing of respiratory function of the patients with pulmonary disorders (bronchial
       asthma in children and adults, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung
       diseases including collagen-vascular diseases, pulmonary hypertension, broncho-
       pulmonary neoplasia, thoracic deformities, tuberculosis)
            spirometry, bodypletismography, diffusion capacity, blood gas analysis,
              exercise tests, broncho-provocation tests
    o fields of research: epidemiological studies (COPD, asthma in adults and children),
       longitudinal research – translating research into clinical practice
    o clinical pharmacology studies
   Bronchology Department
    o endobronchial prelevation (fibrobronchoscopy)
           bronchial aspiration for cytology, BK, bacteriology, mycology; bronchial
             brushing and biopsy; transbronchial pulmonary or ganglionar biopsy;
             bronchoalveolar lavage
    o therapeutical interventions
           fibrobronchoscopy: bronchial aspiration; extended bronchoalveolar lavages;
             foreign body extractions; tumour tissue excisions
           diathermocoagulation; endobronchial laser therapy; traheobronchial protheses;
             tracheobronchial dilatations
   Broncho-alveolar Lavage Department
    o diagnostic evaluations
           cytological and immunocytological analysis of BAL in patients with
             interstitial lung diseases, rare lung diseases, lung cancer, pleural diseases
           analysis of induced sputum
    o fields of research
           implementing new working methods and/or perfecting the available ones for
              the clinical and laboratory investigations
           membrane antigenes typical for tumor cells, using the monoclonal antibody,
              with a view to establish potential tumoral cell markers
           mediators of the inflammation in lung diseases
           local immune reaction in the peripheral lung cancer
           pleural inflammation
           new methods of diagnosis in tuberculosis-Quantiferon-TB Gold?????
   Microbiology Department
    o diagnosis of tuberculosis and other bacterial diseases, including rapid and sensitive
       molecular biology methods
    o drug sensitivity tests for 1 st and 2 nd line and detection of MDR strains; drug resistance
       survey at a national level
    o fields of research:
            new therapeutic solutions in the treatment of tuberculosis drug resistance
              detection of resistance associated mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis
              detection and identification of the genus Mycobacterium and 16 different
               mycobacterial species from bK culture, based on nucleotid differences in the
               16S-23S ribosomal RNA (r RNA) spacer region
              identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis proteins in biological samples
   all the departments
    o elaboration of technical guidelines
    o supervision activities for other laboratories and hospitals
    o education activity: lectures and trainings for medical students, resident and specialist
         physicians, technicians and nurses
    o organizing conferences and events
