Chapter 1
Journey into the Light
I stood in the 55 degree Centigrade heat of the desert at Abu Simbel,
egypt, before the immense statues of Rameses II, the 19th dynasty pharaoh
who ruled at the height of the egyptian empire. the dazzling effect of the
sun as it blazed down on the huge honey-coloured edifice was intensified
by reflection off the surrounding sand and water. I had to stop, awed and
dizzy, to rest on a stone, absorbing and integrating this new and powerful
energy.
Something about the light around the monolith drew me on to
investigating Rameses’ forebear, Akhenaten, a light worshipper who was
married to the beautiful nefertiti. I became fascinated by this amazing pair
who ruled the most sophisticated kingdom in 1300 B.C., in the golden age
of the egyptian empire. over the period of their reign, the glamorous couple
completely upset the status quo by overturning the long-held belief system
in the many gods of ancient egypt. the pharaoh Akhenaten and nefertiti
bravely started a brand new religion, worshipping the light, making its
source, the sun, or Aten, the new God of ancient egypt.

Rejecting all myths and symbols along with the many other gods of
ancient egypt, for the first time in history, one god only was worshipped
— this was monotheism 500 years ahead of the birth of Judaism.
Akhenaten had found a direct path from the human to the divine in
worshipping light, the one Universal God.
For me, this egyptian experience led to newfound insights and
knowledge which increasingly integrated the practical medical schoollearnt
skills of being a physician, with my nature, one of a mystic. through
my work as a doctor, it was becoming apparent to me that light itself was
incredibly special and powerful. I knew intuitively that light was both
the fabric and the connecting substance of everything — the ‘ground
substance’ of the Universe discussed by physicists. As a family doctor for
many years in the UK and Hong Kong I had begun to notice something
unusual about my patients.
It wasn’t anything to do with their body language, rather some
indefinable property. For some reason, this was most obvious in cases
of depression or anxiety, where the mood would be strong enough to
colour their energy in an obvious way.
However, soon I began to notice this difference in anyone seriously
ill. In comparison to other patients, perhaps pregnant women, most
children, or those who wanted check-ups, these sick patients had a
different quality of energy about them.
A person’s light took on different qualities, depending on the nature
of their illness or problems. their light could be fresh and translucent,
like shafts of sunlight filtering through the vibrant green leaves of a
tree. In most illness the light is not clear and flowing freely, ‘stagnant
Qi’, as the Chinese would say.
