Dear Social Studies Educator,
The Louisiana Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference will be held on
Thursday, October 21, and Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Holiday Inn Downtown, 102
Lake Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71101 (please note date change). This year, the
conference will include two full days of in-service, guest speakers, and exhibits.
This year’s convention will include a technology strand with two full days of workshops,
a geography strand with in-service provided by the Louisiana Geography Education
Alliance, an economics strand, with presentations provided by the Louisiana Council of
Economic Education and McNeese State University, and finally, there will be civics
presentations by We the People and The Center for Civic Education.
This year’s Thursday keynote speaker is Dr. Dennis Denenberg, Professor Emeritus,
Millersville University of Pennsylvania. He has experience in elementary and secondary
education, and wrote a book called Fifty American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet, which
will be the basis for his most engaging presentation. Dr. Denenberg was a featured
speaker at the National Council for the Social Studies in 2009, and has been a guest on
CNN Live. Friday’s keynote address will be made by Sue Blanchett, vice-president of
the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Ms Blanchett will swear in the new
slate of 2010-2011 officers for LCSS.
Also on Friday, there will be three field trip in-service opportunities to local museums,
including the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, Spring Street Museum, Multicultural
Museum of Louisiana, Red River Navigation Center, SciPort Discovery Center and
even the historic Municipal Auditorium, which will host a Ghost Tour. In addition,
Kathy Chapman of the Dallas Holocaust Museum will be a presenter and exhibitor.
There will be more exhibitors at the convention than ever before, providing information
and supplies to participants. Every hour there will be door prizes drawn in the Exhibitor
Room for conference attendees.
As if all this were not enough, there will be an Awards Cocktail Social for winners of the
Social Studies Educator of the Year Awards from each parish, which will be held at
SciPort Discovery Center, with an IMAX movie to cap off the evening.
Included are the forms for the LCSS conference. We hope to see you here in October!
