Physical Disabilities Health Impairments Traumatic Brain Injury
EDSP 301 Chapter 8
Orthopedic Impairment
• • • • Adversely affects educational performance Includes congenital anomalies Impairments caused by disease (polio, TB) Impairments from other causes (cerebral palsy, amputations, fractures or bones that cause contractures)
IDEA, Section 300.7 [7]
Physical Disability
An impairment that substantially limits a person’s participation in one or more life activities (home, school, work).
Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Neurological Impairment
Abnormal performance caused by a dysfunction of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, thereby creating transmission of improper instructions, uncontrolled bursts of instructions to the brain. Seizure disorders, cerebral palsy, and spinal bifida
Neuromuscular Diseases
Neurological problems that affect the muscles. Muscular dystrophy, polio, and multiple sclerosis
Other Health Impaired
Having limited strength, vitality, or alertness, due to chronic or acute health problems such as hear condition, tuberculosis, rheumatic fever, nephritis, asthma, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, epilepsy, lead poisoning, leukemia, or diabetes, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance
Traumatic Brain Injury
Acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, or both that adversely affects a child’s education performance.
Traumatic Brain Injury
Impairments in one or more areas: • Cognition, language, memory, attention, reasoning, abstract thinking, judgment, problem-solving, sensory, perceptual, and motor disabilities; psychosocial behavior, physical functions, information processing and speech. • Does not apply to brain injuries that are congenital, degenerative, or during birth
TBI Behaviors
• • • • • • • • • Low social inhibition, judgment, impulse control Faulty reasoning Cognitive processing difficulties Low initiative and motivation Overestimation of abilities Depression Flat affect and sudden outbursts Agitation and irritability Fatigue
Instructional Guidelines
• Trans-disciplinary Teaming and Support Providers • Using Assistive Technology • Making Environmental Modifications • Educating Classmates • Providing Instruction for Motor Skills • Promoting Literacy Development
Physical & Health Impairments Traumatic Brain Injury
• • • • • Cerebral Palsy Spina Bifida Epilepsy Muscular Dystrophy Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) • Traumatic Brain Injury
Health Impairments Include…
• Asthma, cancer, cystic fibrosis, juvenile diabetes, prenatal substance abuse, communicable diseases (tuberculosis, HIV infection), and some attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
• New subgroups: medically fragile and/or technologically dependent
Group Activity
• Count from one to six • Divide into groups with the same number • Select one of the identified physical, health or TBI impairment subgroups • Select one of the identified instructional accommodations • Identify 2-3 accommodations that can be made for the student who has your specific disability subgroup.
Group Activity
• Your group will be given a children’s book about a disability area. • Is this book appropriate to teach students about this specific disability area? Why or why not? • How would you incorporate this book into a lesson, unit, or activity? • What do you hope to accomplish at the end of the lesson, unit or activity?
