High-End Learner Pilot Update
In our continuing efforts to provided timely information to the Alden and Chandler communities about the high-end learner pilot (HELP), the HELP Communication Committee has decided to post a link on the District’s website. Please go to http://www.duxbury.k12.ma.us/ and click on ‘High-end Learner Pilot Information.’ Pertinent information related to this ongoing project will be updated weekly. Questions related to phase one of the pilot may be directed to Alden Principal Trombly, Chandler Principal Billingham or Assistant Superintendent Walsh. Linda Tetreault, the consultant with whom we have been working throughout this initiative, is hosting an information session, this Thursday from 7:00-8:30pm, for families who may be interested in participating in a Guided Discussion Group for Parents of Bright/Gifted/Talented Students. The session will be held in Rm 106 of the Harrington Building at Mass. Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay. If you are interested, please, see the flyer that we’ve posted to our website: www.duxbury.k12.ma.us PTA NEWS The next PTA meeting will be on March 11th @ 7:00pm “Are You Smarter Than A Duxbury Fifth Grader?” March 12th @ 6:30 p.m. in the PAC 4th Grade Friday Night Frenzy, March 27th 6-8:30 p.m. FAMILY FUN NIGHT IS COMING AGAIN !!! Save Friday, April 3rd - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Bring your whole family to make their own sundaes. Enjoy dancing the night away with D.J. Jimmy Jay. Special appearance by Boston Bruin’s mascot “ Blades.” Great teacher silent auction items and our famous class baskets to bid on. (More information to follow). Anyone wishing to donate any items for the auction, please contact Brandy Peters at brandimarks@verizon.net. --- Admission is $7.00 per person (includes face painting!). --- A Ticket flier will follow. AYSTADFG Update Just a few remaining days until the big event. Get your tickets now since we are almost sold out!!!! Ticket forms available on line and in the main office. Tickets can be purchased at Westwinds Bookstore until Wednesday, March 11th at 5:00pm. ASK A TEACHER LIFELINE - $10 - For all those attending, support your favorite student and/or community team with the $10 purchase of a lifeline. If your team needs help answering a question during their time on stage, they can get help one time from our ASK A TEACHER pool of 5th grade teachers. So plan to buy a lifeline or two to support your team – for a ten point question, one lifeline is needed, for a 20 point question, two lifelines will be needed from the audience and so on up to the 40 point question when we will gather lifelines from up to 4 people to get help with a question at this level. As an added bonus, for every lifeline purchased that night, CertaPro Painters will donate $5 up to $500!!!! Get your tickets in advance to avoid the additional charge at the door and to secure yourself a seat in the PAC. Are YOU smarter than a Duxbury Fifth Grader???

Students in all three grades at Alden School will be taking MCAS examinations during two testing windows. The first window lasts from March 30th through April 14th; the second, from May 11th through 28th. Dates when each grade will be testing are as follows: Grade 3 - Reading – March 30th; April 1st and 2nd; - Math – May 11th and 12th. Grade 4 - Composition – March 31st; - English/Language Arts – April 8th, 9th, and 13th; - Math – May 15th and 18th. Grade 5 - English/Language Arts – April 3rd, 6th, and 7th; - Math – May 13th and 14th; - Science – May 19th and 20th; - Social Studies – May 21st and 22nd. Note: DESE announced that it is suspending testing in History and Social Science. These windows are narrow, and we need to ensure that all of our students are tested during them. We ask families not to take students from school – for travel or for appointments – on days when they are scheduled to take MCAS examinations.

Trombly Alden School has been blessed, in recent years, to be served by board members who have been able to devote their energies more-or-less full time to the Alden School PTA. Forever grateful for their enormous support, and genuinely impressed by their fund-raising prowess, none of us on the Alden School faculty have ever expected that folks would always be able to make such generous investments of their time. Times being what they are, my colleagues and I fully expect that our students’ families will have fewer hours and dollars to give than previously. The last thing we want is for people to think that, since they cannot possibly devote half the time that current or past board members have to PTA activities, they should not step forward to serve. We want everyone to get as involved at Alden School as their schedules comfortably allow (emphasis on ‘comfortably’). I imagine that there are many individuals who would like to join the Alden PTA Board for 2009/2010, but whose time is limited and who are daunted by the legendary fund-raising accomplishments of past boards. If you are one of those individuals, I assure you that my colleagues and I will be grateful for whatever help you can give. (We’re really very easy to please!) While it’s always nice when PTAsponsored events raise lots of money, it’s far-from-necessary that they do. What is important is that youngsters see their teachers and families working alongside, and having great fun with, each other and them. I encourage anyone who is interested in serving, next year, in the Alden PTA – whether as a member of the board, as the chairperson of a specific event, or as an extra set of hands – to contact me, or any of the current board members: Karen Bolduc; Kim DiNapoli; Emily Kyriakides; Liz McCann; or Patty Roberts.

Junior Garden Club
“Go Green” this spring and join Junior Garden Club! There are a few openings for the Spring Session of Junior Garden Club, which begins on Thursday, April 9. Classes are held in the Merry Room of the Duxbury Free Library immediately after school and meetings go until 4:15pm. The cost is $30.00 for three sessions and that includes all gardening and craft supplies and a snack. Other spring session dates are May 14 and June 11, 2009.
