Display Options
Display options can be changed by right clicking on the desktop and choosing Properties.
The Display Properties window can also be opened by going to Start>Control
Panel>Display.

After clicking on Properties, the Display Properties window will open where you can
change Themes, Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings.

Changing wallpaper (background)
      1) Open Display Properties.
      2) Click on the Desktop tab.
      3) Scroll through the Background options to choose the wallpaper that
         you like.
      4) Or, you can click the Browse button to search for a picture saved on
         your computer.
      5) Once you have wallpaper selected, you can choose to Center, Tile, or
         Stretch the image.
      6) The settings you have chosen will be previewed on the monitor picture
         on the Desktop tab.
      7) Click Apply to apply your settings.
      8) Click OK to close the Display Properties window.

Changing screen saver
      1) Open Display Properties.
      2) Click on the Screen Saver tab.
      3) Use the Screen Saver drop down menu to choose a screen saver.
      4) The settings you have chosen will be previewed on the monitor picture
         on the Screen Saver tab.
      5) Click Apply to apply your settings.
      6) Click OK to close the Display Properties window.

Making icons bigger
     1) Open Display Properties.
     2) Click on the Settings tab.
     3) Adjust the Screen Resolution slider to the desired size.
     4) The smaller the resolution numbers, the bigger the icons and
         information on your screen will be. I.e. 800 x 600 will appear bigger
         than 1024 x 768.
     5) Click Apply to apply your settings.
     6) Click OK to close the Display Properties window

Arranging icons
      1) Right click on the desktop and choose Arrange Icons By.

             2) Left click on Name, Size, Type, or Modified to arrange icons
                alphabetically by name, by size, by icon type, or by data modified.

Taskbar & Start Menu

      Moving the Taskbar
           1) The default location for the taskbar is at the bottom of the screen, but it
               is possible to move where the taskbar is located.
           2) Click any open space on the taskbar (not on an open application or a
               button).
           3) Drag the taskbar to the top, left, or right of your screen to move it there.

      Taskbar and Start Menu properties can be changed by right clicking on the Start
      button and choosing Properties. The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties
      window can also be opened by going to Start>Control Panel>Taskbar and
      Start Menu.

       Start Menu tab
          • Choose to use the Windows XP start menu or change to the Classic
              Start menu view.
          • Click on the Customize button for more start menu options.
       Taskbar tab
          • Lock the taskbar, Auto-hide the taskbar or always keep the taskbar
              on top of other windows.
          • Group similar taskbar buttons and show the Quick Launch toolbar.
          • Choose to show or hide the clock and to hide inactive icons in the
              system tray.

The quick launch toolbar is a place to put shortcuts to frequently used applications.
Drag applications onto the quick launch toolbar to place them there. Right click
on icons in the quick launch toolbar to delete them.

Pinning items to the start menu
Another way to quickly access frequently used programs is by pinning them to the
start menu.
        1) Browse for the program you would like to pin to the start menu by
            going to Start>All Programs.
        2) Once the program is located, right click on the program name and
            choose Pin to Start Menu.
        3) Pinned applications will appear above the line on the left side of the
            start menu.

Creating a shortcut to an application on your Desktop
       1) Browse for the program you would like to create a shortcut for by
          going to Start>All Programs.
       2) Once the program is located, right click on the program name and
          choose Send To>Desktop (create shortcut).
       3) A shortcut to the application will appear as an icon on your desktop.

File structure/management
It is best practice to save your documents into the My Documents folder (C:\Documents
and Settings\username\MyDocuments). Saving to the My Documents folder keeps your
files in one central location for easy access or backing up. You can create new folders in
the My Documents folder to keep your files organized.

       Creating new folders
              1) Browse to the location you wish to create a new folder in.
              2) Right click and choose New>Folder or go to File>New>Folder on the
                 Menu bar.
              3) Give the New Folder that appears a name.

       Moving files to folders or other locations
            1) Locate the file you wish to move.
            2) Highlight the file by clicking once on it.
            3) Right click and choose Copy or go to Edit>Copy on the Menu bar.
            4) Locate the folder or location you wish to move the file to.
            5) Right click in the location or on the folder and choose Paste or go to
                 Edit>Paste on the Menu bar.
            6) You can also drag and drop files from location to location which is
                 the same as doing a Cut and Paste.

       Checking file/folder size
             1) Right click on the file or folder you wish to know the size for.
             2) Choose Properties.
             3) The size of the file will be on the General tab.

Rename files or folders
     1) Right click on the file or folder you wish to rename.
     2) Choose Rename.
     3) Position your cursor in the box around the file/folder name that
         appears.
     4) Type in the new file or folder name and press Enter on your keyboard
         to accept the change.

Searching for files
      1) Click the Start button.
      2) Choose Search.

3) A search window will appear with some choices of things to search.

4) Select the type of file (or information) you are searching for.
5) Enter more search criteria after choosing the type of file (or
   information) to search for.

              6) Click the Search button to begin searching.
              7) Search results will be displayed on the right half of the Search
                 window.

Keyboard shortcuts
         • Cycle between open applications = Alt + tab
         • Cycle between open tabs in your browser = Ctrl + tab
         • Ctrl + Click = Select multiple non-contiguous files, folders, text entries
         • Copy = Ctrl + C
         • Cut = Ctrl + X
         • Paste = Ctrl + V
         • Select All = Ctrl + A
         • Undo last action = Ctrl + Z
         • Find = Ctrl + F
         • Open the Start Menu = Ctrl + Esc
         • Go to the beginning of a document = Ctrl + Home
         • Go to the end of a document = Ctrl + End
         • Cycle between open Office documents = Ctrl + F6
         • Send almost anything to the printer = Ctrl + P
         • Refresh your screen = F5
         • Take a picture of your entire screen = PrintScreen
                o Use Ctrl + V to paste the picture into a Word document, Photoshop,
                   email, etc.
         • Take a picture of the active window = Alt + PrintScreen
                o Use Ctrl + V to paste the picture into a Word document, Photoshop,
                   email, etc.
