Volume 2, Issue 2 Credit Union House The Capitol View Room, sponsored by Pennsylvania’s credit unions, provides a great location for your next event. End of 3rd Quarter 2007 HigHligHts From tHe Hill M a nage r ’s M e s s age It is a great time to be involved with Credit Union House! As a relatively new entity, there is a lot of room for growth and expansion. During the last quarter, we identified many opportunities for increased involvement and have already realized many results. The level of involvement from individual credit unions has been steadily and substantially increasing. In the past two years. There has been a significant growth in new contributors and new event hosts. Our newly introduced Cornerstone Level has been developed to attract more sustained annual contributors. Ideally, we would like to build a solid foundation comprised of at least 1000 credit unions that make annual contributions. To reach this goal, we will need to triple the current record of annual contributors. While it may sound like a stretch, with system-wide support this becomes a manageable number: Just 20 contributing credit unions in each state, or about 12% of all of America’s credit unions. If your credit union already contributes to Credit Union House, you can help by telling your peers why you believe in this unique advocacy tool and encouraging them to make Credit Union House part of their annual budgets. If you are not yet a contributor, please take a look at the last page of this newsletter to learn more about our wide range of contribution levels and consider joining this impressive group of supporters. The second area where credit unions can get involved with Credit Union House is through hosting events. We have noticed a significant increase in the number of credit unions that inquired about, scheduled, or hosted events at Credit Union House during the second quarter. We welcomed Jill Jarman and Peter Yeskey pause during a Hike credit unions from the Hill event in the Capitol View Room. California, Florida, and New York, and scheduled additional Peter Yeskey, who has been on staff events for credit unions in Virginia since last September, has agreed to take and D.C. to take place later this year. on increased responsibilities as Credit For more details about Credit Union Union House’s Business Development House event space, see our featured Specialist. Page 2 Volume 1, Issue 2 2 n d Q Ua rt e r e v e n t s Credit Union House hosted 27 events during the second quarter, including political fundraisers, credit union receptions, and educational sessions. CURIA Sponsor, Congressman Ed Royce (R, CA-40) visited twice this quarter: Once for California/Nevada’s Hike the Hill and again to speak with the staff and board of Orange County Teachers FCU during their retreat. At a political fundraiser for Rep. Chris Murphy (D, CT-5), Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D, CA-8) addressed those present, including staff from CUNA and the Connecticut, California, and Nevada credit union leagues. Pelosi said she appreciated the chance to be among friends in their house. Staff and volunteers from United Nations FCU (NY), Tampa Bay FCU (FL), and Orange County Teachers FCU (CA) also visited Credit Union House. During the OCTFCU event, we were able to show the pilot episode of the National Credit Union Foundation’s BizKid$ television series (a program OCTFCU has helped sponsor). This served as a great reminder of the cooperation that takes place among the many entities within the credit union movement. Distinguished Guests 12 political fundraising breakfasts, lunches, or receptions were held during the second quarter. Events brought in a total of 25 Members of Congress, from 11 states including: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, New York, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania. A special thank you to those who welcomed Credit Union House to attend their annual meetings, allowing staff to go golfing with some of Virginia’s credit unions and enjoying a boat tour and crab feast with the Maryland/DC credit unions. A special thank you also to the seven states that have reached their annual contribution goals this year. They are: Alaska Delaware Georgia Hawaii Montana South Carolina Washington Credit Union House 403 C St. NE Washington, D.C. 20002 Fax: 202.548.3148 Phone: 202.548.3130 www.cuhouse.com Note: Contributions to Credit Union House are not tax deductible as charitable contributions; however, they may (consult your tax advisor) be tax deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses. Please share your successful ideas for attracting Members of Congress to your CU House event, using CU House to debrief after hill visits, or how you have spread the word about CU House in your state. For questions or to share ideas, please call 202.548.3130 or email jjarman@cuhouse.com. Arkansas Credit Union League President/CEO Reta Kahley discusses CURIA with Congressman Rep. Mike Ross (D, AR-4). Each year, Arkansas’ credit unions host a legislative appreciation reception at Credit Union House. They have consistently experienced 100% participation from their representatives.
