Aside from players, coaches and managers, many of the mainland Japanese teams have loyal fans that have flocked to the training sites to mix-and-mingle with their favorite stars. Governor Hirokazu Nakaima was speaking out over the arrest of a 38-yearold American Marine on suspicion of raping the schoolgirl after first meeting her in Okinawa City and giving her a ride on his motorcycle. Staff Sergeant Tyrone Hadnott denies raping the girl, but police say he has admitted to forcing the girl down and kissing her. Many details of the incident are muddled, but Okinawa City Police say Hadnott first approached the girl as she was with friends near Koza Music Town in Okinawa City’s Uechi area about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. She reportedly accepted a ride on Hadnott’s motorcycle with the understanding he would give her a ride home. Instead, police say, Hadnott took T Teen rape triggers public anger the young teen to his home in Kitanakagusuku, where he tried to kiss her. Frightened and crying, police say, the girl tried to get away, but Hadnutt convinced her he would take her home and she got into his car. Some reports say the girl called home, while others say her friends made an emergency call to police about 10:20 p.m. Still other accounts are the girl sent text messages on her cell phone, and that her parents called police. The Okinawa City deputy police chief told CNN Tuesday the girl managed to call her friends on her cell phone, and they called police. Police confirm they were called about 10:30 p.m. with the report of a missing girl, and that they began a search. The girl was found in Chatan Town about 10:50 p.m. and taken into protective custody. Investigators say the 14-year-old described her assailant, his motorcycle and car, and his home near Awase Golf Course. Police have been mum over physical aspects of the case, including information regarding any possible rape tests, or what they found when searching Hadnott’s home and vehicles. Hadnott, assigned to Camp Courtney, was apprehended about 2 a.m. He has been transferred to a facility in Naha City by Japanese police. Police have told CNN they are planning to file rape charges, despite Hadnott’s statement to them he only intended to kiss the girl. Authorities can hold the Marine for 23 days before filing charges. Waves of protest were quick in coming from both central government officials and those on Okinawa. The ongoing battle between the Gima Group and Kokuba Group has crossed numerous business, civic and organizational lines through the past dozen years, with each seeking supremacy as the Prefecture’s number one company. Competitors in the construction and other industries, Gima and Kokuba never want to yield any point on any subject to the other. Gima Group is now taking the Naha Chamber of Commerce to court, seeking to invalidate a Chamber resolution regarding membership requirements. Gima Group wants 45 people admitted, but the Chamber is restructuring its framework this year, a move that involves electing a new chairman and vice chairman and placing membership issues before a business meeting to decide electors. “If they don’t listen to our opinion,” Gima Group says, “we are going to stop the election proceedings.” Gima acknowledges both it and Kokuba Group want to bring their own candidate to be Chamber chairman, and to promote that candidacy. The Chamber says it is a matter of policy. “About 2,561 of the members are all right,” a Chamber official says. “They meet the requirements of membership. Another 1,000 members,” he continues, “have not satisfied membership conditions so we can’t admit them.” The Naha Chamber of Commerce says the 1,000 individuals sought Chamber membership in order for Gima Group to gain control of votes in any election. The Naha Chamber is insisting it does not want to accept people or companies for membership if they don’t have offices in Naha City. “Members should have offices in Naha City,” an official says. “That’s a Temporary tax stirring opposition across Japan A temporary extra tax on gasoline due to expire soon is fanning discontent between the nation’s 47 Prefecture governors who want to keep it, and consumers who want it to disappear. “We need to keep this tax going,” says Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima. “If the tax is not coming to the Prefecture, we will not be able to meet our budget at all.” Nakaima and the other governors want to keep the temporary special road tax, extending it at least for several years. Without the tax, officials say, “we can’t even make a new road.” Citizens complain taxes are already too high, and are upset with politicians’ push to keep the special road tax. Rolling library to be parked due to budget constraints The popular traveling library operated by Naha City will cease operation in the new budget year because of the city’s financial worries. The rolling library costs ¥18 million to operate each year, and 2008 would be worse because of the need to purchase a new vehicle at a cost of ¥17 million. Naha City officials say there simply is not money available in the budget to fund the much loved and appreciated library, which it has operated since 1976. The library travels around the city, visiting apartments and housing complexes twice each month. “We know the city has financial difficulty,” one unhappy library user complains, “but why should we cut our children’s dreams?” Other users say the travelling library is the only way elderly and disabled people have a chance to obtain books. “You can’t cut the library,” one argued. “Please continue.” A junior high school girl says “I love to read library books because this travelling library has more than in my school.” The library, she says, gives her the opportunity to read more “because it comes near my apartment.” Naha City officials say they’re looking for less costly alternatives to the travelling library, including posting books at community halls and apartment complex common stations. Other cities with rolling libraries—Nago City, Okinawa City, Ginowan City, Urasoe City, Itoman City, and Miyakojima City—all say they’ll continue to popular services in the coming More pesticide found on frozen gyoza packages Tokushima Prefecture officials say they’ve now discovered dichlorvos on four packages of frozen dumplings recovered from Co-op Tezukuri Gyoza after being recalled by the Japanese Consumers Cooperative Union. kids love Manta Park t’s big, it’s exciting, it’s fun. Everyone’s talking about the giant slide setup at Manta Park, a slide so tall it is intimidating even for adults. The slide-chute is long, and kids can’t wait to go down and through, then climb up and do it again. Manta Park is a children’s mecca, filled with swings, a skateboard zone, basketball hoops and of course, the slidechute. Manta Park has plenty of greenery for shade, and flowers too. Adults like the observatory and the lounge areas where they can relax while the youngsters play. The park has restroom facilities, but no parking. To visit Manta Park, take Gate 2 Street straight through Takahara intersection to the second traffic light following, then turn left. As a hospital is viewed on the right, travel straight past the Awase Lawson to the second traffic light. Turn right and you’re at Manta Park. Base taxis operate across the island, serving the military community, but AAFES wanted to go a step further than simply getting customers from Point A to Point B. Yasuo Fukuda warned “we take this very seriously,” and told a parliamentary panel “There have been incidents like this in the past, and it is a problem that has occurred again.” The Foreign Ministry’s director general for North American Affairs took the case to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. Shinichi Nishimiya expressed regrets over the Okinawa incident to the Embassy’s deputy chief of mission. He asked Joseph Donovan to improve discipline within the U.S. forces in Japan to prevent another incident. Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura called the report “extremely regrettable” and immediately turned to Washington to strengthen discipline in Japan. Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, the commander of all American forces in Japan, says the U.S. is aware “of the serious allegations in Okinawa,” and noted the situation is being closely monitored “while fully cooperating with Japanese officials.” In a written statement, Wright said “If the allegations are true, our hearts are with the victim and family.” The Commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force, Lt. Gen. Richard C. Zilmer, and the American Consul General on Okinawa, Kevin Maher, paid visits to Governor Hirokazu Nakaima, offering apologies for the incident. Zilmer pledged to “give strong ethics education and do more to all servicemen under my command.” Okinawa officials are bracing for protests over the allegations, recalling the 1995 gang rape of a young schoolgirl by three American GI’s. That case stretched thin American-Okinawan relations. Governor Nakaima predicts there “will naturally be a detrimental effect on the sentiment of Okinawan people,” but said he did not think it would adversely affect the relocation of Futenma Marine Corps Air Station from Ginowan City to the Camp Schwab area in northern Okinawa. “Futenma will be returned to us, and we will be able to utilize it again,” Nakaima emphasized, saying “That’s what counts and this process itself is needed.” The alleged rape is receiving worldwide coverage in the media. International radio and television networks, and even U-Tube, have been covering the story on a round-the-clock basis.
