•   New low molecular weight polymer in
    isododecane that is an excellent substitution
    for products that incorporate materials
    derived from rosins and their counterparts.

Koboguard 5400 vs. Rosins

•   Rosins have wider variability of properties
    as a result of their natural origin and
    structure.

•   Directional agreement in a number of areas,
    including the cosmetic industry, to avoid the
    use of rosin and derivatives due to their
    allergenic profile.

•   High odor and color changes are sometimes
    associated with rosins and derivatives.

How does Koboguard 5400 IDD work in
color cosmetics and sunscreen systems?
•   Evaporation of isododecane from the system
    deposits Koboguard 5400 onto the skin as a
    continuous film when present in sufficient
    concentration.

•   The film encapsulates the pigments and binds
    them imparting water-resistance and film
    stability on the skin preventing creasing.

•   The adhesive properties of Koboguard anchor
    the pigment particles to the skin improving the
    rub-resistance.

Modifying Koboguard’s properties
•   The addition of Tospearl to a Koboguard-based
    formulation will decrease ‘tack’.

•   Small amounts of caprylic/capric triglyceride,
    neopentyl glycol diheptanoate, octyl palmitate,
    squalane or mineral oil will help to ‘plasticize’
    the Koboguard 5400 IDD film to become more
    flexible.

•   Koboguard may be used in combination with
    other hydrocarbon-based polymers such as
    polyethylene or polybutene to further improve
    the film-forming properties.
Availability

•   Concentrated 70% solutions of Koboguard
    5400 in Isododecane and C10-13 Isoparaffin.
    Best for rub-resistance, longer wear.

•   50% solutions available in various esters and
    oils: caprylic/capric triglyceride, neopentyl
    glycol diheptanoate, octyl palmitate,
    squalane and mineral oil.

•   All materials for these solutions are
    vegetable, mineral or synthetically derived.

•   Koboguard 5400 IDD is a low molecular weight
    polymer (Hydrogenated Polycyclopentadiene) in
    Isododecane.

•   Helps to improve adhesion and substantivity of the
    cosmetic film to the skin, lashes, hair or nail.

•   Recommended levels are 5-20% actives.
