VOICES FOR WORKERS
Recently, our Local Union had a Steward Conference where numerous Stewards were in attendance. Many of them thought it was one of the best and most informative conferences they have attended. They left with information they can share with and better serve our membership. We were pleased to have the presence of our Stewards, Executive Board, Local Union Staff, International Union Speakers, UALR Labor Education Program Instructors, Teamster Stewards and Staff, State and Federal Mediators, Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, and Congressmen Vic Snyder and Mike Ross, who both have records of being a voice for workers and working families. We all agreed that we need a change in direction for all our brothers and sisters and Americas middle class. Thats why I am asking for your help and voice to restore the American Dream for Americas Workers. I ask that you pledge your support for the Employee Free Choice Act by signing pledge cards and writing letters to our Congress to support this federal legislation. With this legislation, we can help more workers and raise working conditions for everyone. Employee Free Choice Act federal legislation will: Establish strength in numbers at the bargaining table to raise wages and benefits, including quality family healthcare. Transform the low wage economy into a good jobs economy. Provide workers a simple, one-step process to freely choose Union representation. Increase middle class jobs. And make America work for American workers.

Recientemente, nuestra Unión Local tuvo una Conferencia para Delegados donde numerosos Delegados asistieron. Muchos de ellos comentaron que había sido una de las mejores conferencias de las que ellos habían asistido. LOCAL 2008 HOSTS STEWARD EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE
Over 100 Local 2008 stewards and guests representing facilities throughout Arkansas and Noel, Missouri, came together May 4-5, 2008, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to participate in a Steward Educational Conference. Stewards are a very significant part of your Union. We depend on them daily to keep us informed of worker issues and enroll new members, as well as to serve as an educator, problem solver, watchdog, and protector. It is the Local Unions desire and responsibility to give stewards as much training as possible in order for them to fulfill the duties of a steward properly. Executive Assistant to the Director of UFCW Region 5 John Montgomery addressed the stewards regarding the growth of the UFCW and how all of us can Help Grow This Union. Stephen Svetz, with the Arkansas Attorney Generals Office, gave a presentation on Identity Theft, detailing how a thief can gain access to and use your personal information against you. International Vice President and Director of the Legislative and Political Action Department at the UFCW International Union, Michael J. Wilson, discussed the Active Ballot Club and the importance of politics in our lives. We had the privilege of hearing from Congressmen Vic Snyder and Mike Ross, as well as Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, a former UFCW member, and Joyce Elliott, the newly elected Arkansas State Senator from District 33. Robyn Robbins and Paul Lechtenberg from the Occupational Safety and Health Office at the UFCW International Union gave a presentation regarding Safety in the Workplace. Again this year, the UALR Labor Education Program instructors conducted concurrent workshops. They focused on two issues: Grievance Handling and Building a Rap no, not rap as in music, but learning how to communicate with members. In todays workplace, we have very young workers and very old workers; we have different cultures and different languages. In order for a steward to properly communicate with existing members about their issues and grievances, or with new employees about the benefits of being a Union member, stewards must know what to ask and get as much information as possible about the grievance or the needs of members. Local Union Attorney John Burnett discussed the Importance of the Grievance Procedure. The stewards also enjoyed a scavenger hunt, bingo, door prizes, and more throughout the conference, giving them a break from the workshops. We are confident your stewards gained knowledge that will help them in their daily steward activities. But the job is not over. Stewards cannot, nor should they be expected to, do it all alone. They still need your help in many ways, such as identifying and reporting contract violations, encouraging new employees to join the Union, and explaining to new employees that Strength is in Numbers when you go to the bargaining table. Nonmembers want something for nothing. They never have a good reason, just an excuse. If they wont join and support the group as a whole, let them know how you feel about it. A great big Thank You goes out to all the stewards who attended and participated in this Steward Educational Conference. (See photos on pages 4 & 5.)
EL LOCAL 2008 REALIZÓ UNA CONFERENCIA COMO DELEGADO EDUCACIONAL
Más de 100 delegados e invitados del Local 2008 representando sus lugares de trabajo por todo Arkansas y Noel, Missouri, asistieron los días 4-5 de Mayo del 2008, en Little Rock, Arkansas, para participar en la Conferencia Educacional para Delegados. Los delegados son parte muy significativa de tu Unión. Nosotros dependemos de ellos diariamente para mantenernos informados de los problemas que ocurren con trabajadores y para inscribir a nuevos miembros, así como también servir como educadores, resolver problemas, vigilar y proteger. Es el deseo de tu Unión Local y responsabilidad dar a los delegados el entrenamiento como sea necesario para que ellos puedan desempeñar sus deberes correctamente como delegados. John Montgomery Asistente Ejecutivo al Director de la UFCW Región 5 dio un discurso a los delegados acerca del crecimiento del UFCW y de como todos podemos ayudar a crecer esta Unión. Stephen Svetz con la Oficina de Abogados General de Arkansas, dio su presentación sobre el robo de identidad, detallando como un ladrón puede tomar acceso de información personal y usarla en tu contra. Vice presidente Internacional y Director Legislativo y en el Departamento de Acción Político de la Unión Internacional UFCW, Michael J. Wilson, describió la importancia de la Boleta del Club Activo y también la importancia de los Políticos en nuestras vidas. Nosotros tuvimos el privilegio de escuchar del Congresista Vic Snyder y a Mike Ross, así como también al Teniente Gobernador Bill Halter un formal miembro del UFCW, y Joyce Elliot, el recién electo Senador Estatal de Arkansas del distrito 33. Robyn Robbins y Paul Lechtenberg de la Oficina de Salud y Seguridad de la UFCW Unión Internacional que dieron su presentación acerca de seguridad en el Área de Trabajo. También este año, los instructores de Programas Educacionales Laborales del UALR conducirán talleres de trabajo. Ellos se enfocaron en dos puntos principales, el sistema de Agravios y construyendo a un Representante para aprender como comunicarse con sus miembros. Hoy en día en el lugar de trabajo, tenemos trabajadores muy jóvenes y trabajadores de muchos años, tenemos diferentes culturas y diferentes lenguajes. Para que un delegado se comunique apropiadamente con los miembros acerca de sus problemas y agravios, o con nuevos empleados acerca de beneficios que tenemos los miembros, delegados tienen que saber que preguntas hacer y obtener lo más que puedan en información como sea posible para los agravios o las necesidades de los miembros. El abogado de la Unión Local John Burnett explicó la importancia del sistema de agravios. Los delegados también disfrutaron el juego de búsqueda, el bingo, los regalos y de la conferencia, dándoles un descanso fuera de su lugar de trabajo. Estamos seguros que sus delegados obtuvieron mucho conocimiento que los va ayudar en sus actividades diarias como delegados. Pero el trabajo no se ha acabado, y no deberíamos dejarles todo el trabajo a ellos solos. Ellos necesitan de tu ayuda de muchas maneras, tales como identificando y reportando violaciones del contrato, alentando a los nuevos empleados que la fuerza esta en los números cuando tu vas a la mesa de negociaciones. Los que no son miembros siempre quieren algo por nada. Ellos nunca tienen una buena razón, solo una excusa, si ellos no se unen y apoyan el grupo como uno solo, déjales saber como tu te sientes acerca de eso. PASSWORD OVERLOAD?
For Web users, passwords can accumulate like pennies in a sock drawer. But being careless with passwords can cost you far more than loose change. Most cybercrimes against consumers involve identity theft, and capturing the passwords that control access to your bank or e-mail account is one way thieves pull it off. They can snoop for passwords by hacking into your system or simply lift them from that note you taped to your monitor where you jot down your secret codes. Many people try to keep things simple by using one password for everything. Thats dangerous if hackers break one account code, theyll test it on all your accounts. Real-language passwords (think BigBearsFan) are also risky because theyre easy to hack with programs that test combinations of every word in the dictionary. To be safe, protect each account with a different strong password that is a random string of at least eight letters and numbers. Write it down on a slip of paper, but insert some dummy characters here and there for example, change every B to Z just in case your cheat sheet falls into the wrong hands.

¿CONTRASEÑA SOBRE CARGADA?
Para usuarios del servicio de la Internet, las contraseñas pueden acumular como centavos para una alcancía. Y él no ser tan cuidadoso con las contraseñas, puede costarle más que un solo cambio de bolsillo. La mayoría de crímenes cibernéticos contra consumidores se involucra con robo de identidad, así mismo la captura de contraseñas que controlan él acceso a tu banco o de tu cuenta de e-mail es una de las maneras mas utilizadas por los ladrones. Ellos pueden infiltrarse para robar las contraseñas y así robar dentro de tu sistema o simplemente levantan las notas que le pegaste a tu monitor con los códigos secretos. Muchas personas tratan de hacer las cosas simples como por ejemplo utilizar una contra seña para todo. Eso es muy peligroso, sí un ladrón logra robarse el código de una cuenta, él intentara en él resto de tus cuentas. Lenguaje real en contra señas por ejemplo seria (piensa fan de los osos grandes) también serian riesgosos por que son fáciles de infiltrar con programas de prueba de combinaciones que usan cada palabra del diccionario. Para estar seguro, protege cada cuenta con un código fuerte diferente, que sea al asar y por lo menos de ocho letras y números. Apuntalo en un papel, pero ponle figuras chistosas por todas partes y por ejemplo, cambia cada B con una Z solo por sí acaso tu hoja cayera en las manos equivocadas.

LOCAL 2008 ELECTS CONVENTION DELEGATES
In a series of meetings held across the state in April, members nominated delegates and alternate delegates to represent Local 2008 at the Sixth Regular UFCW International Convention, which will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, August 18-22, 2008. The election was conducted by mail referendum and the ballots were counted on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. This convention will set the course of the International Union for the next five years. Thousands of delegates will attend and vote on policies and constitutional amendments that govern our great Union. Congratulations to the following delegates and alternate delegates:

New Web Site for Young UFCW Members
Young members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union have a place of their own on the web. Launched with a younger audience in mind, www.myufcw.org offers information about the Union, a blog, a MySpace page, ways to participate in Union activities, and quick links to scholarship information and other websites. The site also has a link to the Unions Spanish-language website.

HOW UNIONS HELP ALL WORKERS
Unions have a substantial impact on working families. The most sweeping advantage for unionized workers is in fringe benefits. Unionized workers are more likely than their non-unionized counterparts to receive paid leave, are approximately 18% to 28% more likely to have employer-provided health insurance, and are 23% to 54% more likely to be in employer-provided pension plans. Unions play a pivotal role both in securing legislated labor protections and rights such as safety and health, overtime, and family/medical leave, and in enforcing those rights on the job. Unions are thus an intermediary institution that provides a necessary complement to legislated benefits and protections. You can play an important role in helping working families who do not have a Union. Contact your Union Representative and ask them how you can help. We have several organizing drives going on, or you may know workers who need a Union. The advantages that unionized workers enjoy as the result is clear. A strong Union presence fuels innovations in wages, benefits, due process, and a democratic voice for workers.
