Presidents Report
PLEASE SUPPORT THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT
I had the privilege to represent our Local Union recently as a delegate to the Sixth Regular Convention of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. This convention takes place once every five years. There were more than 3,000 UFCW members and guests. We discussed many topics of concern, such as how to grow and make our Union better, working hard to get the Employee Free Choice Act passed into law, building relationships in our communities, and fighting for national health care programs that would be available to all Americans. In electing politicians who are supportive of worker issues involving all workers, we must show the world that we are One Union with One Voice, and what is done to one of us is being done to us all. We have a goal of 3,000,000 members by the end of the year 2010. To achieve this goal, we must work together and help add members to our Local Union. First, by voting for Barack Obama, who has already committed to sign the Employee Free Choice Act when it crosses his desk. This will help workers who are interested in forming a Union. This will also increase our Union density and will give us strength at the bargaining table. History has taught us that political involvement is crucial to a strong and effective Labor Union. Unions must participate in the political process to preserve and establish safeguards, which protect our members rights at the bargaining table, and safety on the job.

Yo tuve el privilegio de representar a nuestra Unión Local como delegado a la Sexta Convención Regular de la United Food and Commercial Workers Internacional Unión. UNIONS ARE KEY TO REVIVING AMERICA
Remember postwar prosperity? Unions brought it to you. Now, before your eyes begin to glaze over, read on. Im not an economist, but I married one. I am a United Auto Workers member at the Lansing Delta Township plant. My wife is an economist with a Ph.D. When it comes to politics, I am the irresistible force and she is the immovable object. According to the law of physics, something has to give. Our latest Big Bang discussion has centered on the current labor disputes. Forget about the strikes chronology, timing, and consequences. That will be the subject of debate and analysis for years to come. Instead, I said, Honey, lets talk about history. The longest period of economic growth in America happened in the 1940s - 1970s. It is no accident that during that time, union membership was at the highest level ever. Remember the days when the American dream of home ownership and your kids being better off than their parents were commonplace? Nowadays, the only way to be better off than your parents is to move in with them and hope they include you in the will. Our country is charting an economic course that smacks of the Dark Ages. The serfs - thats us, the working men and women - live and work to serve the ruling class, a.k.a. corporate America. Their low bidder mentality has placed our once proud nation at risk and eroded our manufacturing base to a bread-line mentality, where $14 an hour is somehow considered as good as it gets. Meanwhile, the Wall Street wizards manipulate our currency, offshore everything, and get high fives from the White House, while more struggling families lose their homes. When we change our economic policy and strengthen the middle class, the mortgage crisis will disappear because our Unions will negotiate good-paying jobs that allow us to make our mortgage payments. The health-care crisis will disappear because our Unions will bargain health care for all American workers and their families. Globalization will not be a dirty word because our Unions would set the standard for all workers across the globe to demand safe and healthy working conditions and fair pay. That will increase productivity and profit for corporations that their workers can share. Finally, America will be a safe and secure nation when we stop wasting billions of dollars building roads, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure for hostile nations, while our families at home suffer. This American thinks its high time we turn our vast resources inward and start taking care of the little guy the working men and women who are the foundation of our nation. Back in the Dark Ages, the serfs did something by grabbing their pitchforks, uniting in an army, and storming the castle. As proud union members, our vote is our pitchfork, Unions are the army, and corporate greed is the castle. Everybody talks about supporting the middle class. Por mientras, los sabios de (Wall Street) manipulan a nuestra actualidad, hasta la orilla de todo y les dan el saludo de mano de parte de la Casa Blanca, mientras más familias están luchando, y perdiendo sus hogares. Globalización no será una palabra sucia por que nuestras Uniones pondrán en marcha un mecanismo estándar para todos los trabajadores por todo el mundo, exigiendo condiciones de trabajo seguras y saludables y una paga justa. Que eso incrementara productividad y ganancias para corporaciones que compartirán con sus trabajadores. Finalmente, América será una nación segura cuando pare de mal gastar billones de dólares construyendo carreteras, escuelas, hospitales, e infraestructura para naciones hostiles, mientras nuestras familias sufren en nuestro hogar. Este pensamiento Americano es uno de los altos tiempos donde nosotros debemos voltear nuestros chalecos de recursos en guardiá, y empecemos a cuidar del más pequeño los hombres y mujeres trabajadoras quienes son los fundadores de nuestra nación. When our nation goes through difficult times, it affects us all. Many of our family members and friends risk their lives fighting for our country. We have all been affected by a slowed economy that has caused a cut in the number of hours worked, layoffs of employees, and even the loss of jobs. But we know God still hears and answers prayers. Martin Luther King, Jr., once described Americans and our American way of life this way: We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. That statement is as profound and instructive today as it was a half century ago when Dr. King wrote those words from a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama. Labor Day traditionally kicks off the final sprint to Election Day. From now until November 4, Americans will engage in a national debate about who to entrust with the awesome responsibility of leading our nation. It is up to every single American to determine the tone and character of that debate. We have a choice. We can conduct this debate on the merits of each candidate, knowing that we are, all of us, tied in a single garment, endeavoring in the serious work of setting the future course for our children and grandchildren. Or we can use this national debate as a platform to breed division, conflict, and racial fears as some extremists are already doing in newspapers and over the airwaves. We cannot solve the challenges before us unless we truly recognize that we must solve them together. Americans may come from different backgrounds and outlooks but we share the same hope of achieving the American dream. All of us want to take part, and do our part, in a society that provides a better life for every American. I believe Senator Barack Obama is the best candidate the American dream candidate not only for working people, but for all Americans. He believes in the promise of the American dream because he has lived it. He believes that, in America, if you work hard, you ought to share in the success of your labor. In America, you ought to be able to earn wages and benefits that can raise a family. From ending the war in Iraq to shoring up the economy, from ensuring health care for every American to solving our energy crisis, Barack Obama has thoughtful, well-formulated proposals designed to put America back on track and make the American dream a real possibility again for working families. Thats why it is so gravely distressing to see the nefarious efforts of those who would turn back the clock in America by fueling racial fears and inciting racial conflicts around Senator Obamas candidacy. Americans need serious debate about how best to meet the challenges of our ailing economy. We need real, workable proposals on how to fix our health care system and make college more affordable for our kids. Its critically important for the U.S. to regain its place as a leader on the world stage. Yet there are those who persist in distracting us with divisive and morally repugnant racial fear mongering. In this election, working people have an incredible opportunity to turn our country around. We can reject the politics of division and conflict. We can say: Not this time, not this election. Union members know better than most, as Martin Luther King says, Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. We know that an injury to one is an injury to all. And grave injury is caused by those who would demean this election with racial rhetoric. Lets focus the debate on the prospects for a better tomorrow in which all workers will have their rights protected and their hard work respected; a tomorrow with affordable health care for all Americans, economic prosperity, and national security. If we conduct a responsible national debate, we can elect a new president who will bring about positive economic change a president who will not put corporate interests above those of working people. We have a clear choice on the November presidential ballot. Barack Obama offers change and hope he brings a commitment to the cause of working people. With his leadership, we can change America, and restore the American dream.

Terminando la guerra en Iraq se podrá levantar la economía, para así asegurar servicios de salud para cada Americano y así solventar nuestra crisis energética, Barack Obama ha formulado muy bien una propuesta designada a poner de vuelta atrás en el camino correcto a toda América y así hacer él sueño Americano mas real y cercano para todas las familias trabajadoras. Es por eso que es estresante y enfurecedor ver todos los esfuerzos de aquellos que voltean el reloj de espaldas, dando así a toda América una encendida a los temores raciales, e incitando los conflictos raciales alrededor de la candidatura del Senador Obama. Los Americanos necesitan un debate serio acerca del mejor método en contra de los desafíos de la economía. Nosotros necesitamos propuestas reales trabajables en como arreglar nuestro sistema de seguro medico y el hacer que el colegio sea menos costoso para nuestros hijos. Es críticamente importante para los Estados Unidos el reestablecer la etapa en el mundo del liderazgo. Aun así hay aquellos que persisten en distraernos con malicia moral repugnante y manipulando el temor racial. En esta elección, las personas trabajadoras tienen una oportunidad increíble de voltear y darle vuelta al país. Nosotros podemos rechazar las políticas de división y conflicto. Nosotros podemos decir: No, esta vez no en esta elección. Los miembros de la Unión saben mas que la mayoría, así como Martin Luther King dijo, Lo que sea que afecte a uno directamente, afecta a todos indirectamente. Nosotros sabemos que una herida para uno, es una herida para todos. Y una grave herida es causada por aquellos quienes interfieren en esta elección con métodos raciales. Vamos a enfocarnos en el debate de prospectos por un mañana mejor, en donde todos los trabajadores tendrán sus derechos protegidos y su duro trabajo sea reconocido; un mañana con servicios de seguro medico costeables para todos los Americanos, prosperidad económica y seguridad nacional. Si nosotros conducimos un debate nacional responsable, nosotros podemos elegir a un presidente nuevo, quien traerá cambios positivos económicos, un presidente que no pondrá los intereses corporativos por encima de las personas trabajadoras. Nosotros tenemos una clara elección en la boleta presidencial de Noviembre. Barack Obama ofrece cambio y esperanza, él trae un compromiso a la causa de las personas trabajadoras. Con su liderazgo, nosotros podemos cambiar América, y re-establecer él suena Americano.

CIVIL RIGHTS AND COMMUNITY ACTION
Recently, the Sixth Regular Convention of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union was held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and I was honored to serve as Co-Chair of the Civil Rights and Community Action Committee. During our committee meetings, the delegates assigned to this committee deliberated and discussed the various resolutions. The great labor and civil rights leader, A. Philip Randolph, once said, Justice is never given; it is extracted and it must be continuous. The UFCW, through its work on community action and civil rights in both Canada and the United States, has embraced this challenge and has worked hard to carry on the cause of racial, economic, and worker justice. To be successful, we must work closely with our community allies creating coalitions and embracing our common struggles. Our Union proudly works to tear down barriers of exclusion and inequality. Our operating principle, One Union - One Voice, speaks to our core commitment of inclusion, equity, unity, and strength. The UFCW will continue to organize women, people of color, young workers, immigrants, and refugees to strengthen our ability to build bargaining and political power. Our Union has been at the forefront of these issues. We must acknowledge the pioneering sacrifices of those that have come before us. We must also recognize the enormous asset our young members can be, and develop, mentor, and mobilize them to become the next generation of UFCW. We must strive to respond to their ideas, opinions, and interests. More than 40 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said, The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress.
DERECHOS CIVILES Y ACCIÓN COMUNITARIA
Recientemente, se realizo la Sexta Convención Regular de la United Food and Commercial Workers Internacional Unión que se llevo acabo en Montreal, Québec, Canadá, y yo tuve el honor de servir como vise presidente de los Derechos Civiles y de ser parte del Comité de Comunidad en Acción. Durante las juntas de nuestro comité, los delegados asignados a este comité deliberaron y discutieron las varias resoluciones. El gran líder de los derechos civiles y laborarles, A. Philip Randolph, dijo una ves, La justicia nunca se reparte; solo es extraída y así tiene que continuar. La UFCW, por medio de su trabajo en acción comunitaria y derechos civiles en los dos países Canadá y los Estados Unidos, han adoptado este en un desafió y han trabajado muy duro para llevar esta causa de injusticia racial, económica y justicia laboral. Para poder triunfar, tenemos que trabajar juntos con nuestras comunidades aliadas creando así coaliciones para pelear nuestras dificultades. Nuestra Unión orgullosamente trabaja muy duro para deshacer las barreras de la exclusión y de la desigualdad. Nuestro principio de operar, es Una Unión - Una Voz, eso habla de nuestra estructura y compromiso de igualdad, unidad y fuerza. La UFCW continuara organizando mujeres, personas de color, trabajadores jóvenes, inmigrantes y refugiados, para así fortalecer nuestra habilidad de construir negociaciones y poder Político. Nuestra Unión ha estado al frente de todos estos casos. Nosotros tenemos que reconocer los sacrificios de los que ya habían enfrentado estos casos antes que nosotros. También tenemos que reconocer la enorme ayuda que nos pueden dar nuestros miembros jóvenes, en desarrollo, instruir, y movilizarlos para que así sean nuestra próxima generación de la UFCW. Nosotros tenemos que escuchar para así responder a sus ideas, opiniones y a su interés. Hace mas de 40 años, el Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., dijo, El movimiento laboral fue la fuerza principal que transformo a la miseria y desigualdad en esperanza y progreso.
