CHANGE WE CAN LIVE WITH
As you know by now, we have elected Barack Obama to serve as our new President of the United States of America. President-elect Obama has promised to bring a change to all of America and not to a select few. I am encouraged to see all who participated in our election process that crossed race, age, sex, religion, and even party lines to vote for Barack Obama. Our work and support for him is not over, for he needs our prayers and words of encouragement if he is to be successful. He has a lot on his plate, but I feel he is the right man for the job. It is critically important that we get behind him on issues that are important to working families, such as healthcare and the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for people to join unions. President-elect Obama supports this Act and will sign it when it is passed through Congress. I know as President, Barack Obama will bring changes we all can live with and bring back the true meaning of One Nation Under God. President Charles Lee

Así como sabemos ahora, que hemos elegido a Barack Obama a servir como nuestro nuevo Presidente de los Estados Unidos de América. El Presidente electo Obama ha prometido traer un cambio a toda América y no solo algunos elegidos. Yo quisiera ver a todos aquellos que participaron en nuestro proceso de elección, que atravesó por diferentes razas, edades, sexo, religión y líneas de partidos que votaron por Barack Obama. Nuestro trabajo y apoyo para él, no es todo, él necesita de nuestras oraciones y palabras de aliento para que así sea victorioso. Él tiene mucho trabajo por hacer, pero yo creo que él es el hombre para este trabajo. Es críticamente importante que lo respaldemos en puntos que son importantes para las familias trabajadoras, tales como el seguro medico y la ley Employee Free Choice Act, la cual hará más fácil a las personas a formar uniones. HISTORIC VICTORY FOR WORKING FAMILIES OBAMA ELECTION OPPORTUNITY TO REBUILD AND STRENGTHEN MIDDLE CLASS
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) endorsed President-elect Barack Obamas candidacy in February because his run for the White House was based on renewing hope for the middle class on restoring the American Dream for Americas workers. UFCW members nationwide were excited and energized by Barack Obamas message. And that excitement and energy unleashed an unprecedented nationwide mobilization and outreach effort that reached millions of working families across the country to help secure Obamas historic victory. We pounded the pavement, worked the phones, and went door-to-door, said 22-year-old Samantha Miskevich, fish department manager at an Acme Supermarket in Limerick, Pennsylvania, and member of UFCW Local Union 1776. Ive never worked so hard or talked to so many people. This election was about saving the middle class. The UFCWs efforts were comprehensive, focusing not only on traditional battleground states, but also in expanding the electoral map in key states, including Virginia and Colorado, where UFCW members turned out in record numbers to change the direction of our country. This election was about getting America back on track, said Teresa Ransone, a UFCW Local Union 400 member and Kroger supermarket cake decorator in Roanoke, Virginia. What inspired me was Senator Obamas position on affordable education and health care, continued Ms. Ransone, who put in extra hours volunteering to phone bank and canvass for Obama in southwestern Virginia. He proved time and again why he was the best candidate. UFCW Local Unions across the country were critical to countering misinformation, informing voters about the issues that matter to working families, and ensuring that successful get-out-the-vote operations were in place. While the hard fought election is now over, the UFCW efforts to rebuild our ailing economy and strengthen our middle class have just begun. The UFCW looks forward to working closely with the Obama Administration and Congress to restore good middle class jobs to our communities. We know change cannot come overnight, said Ransone. But working people are ready to support President Obama and our other elected leaders to put economic policies in place that work for the middle class. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Working families achieved an historic victory on November 4, 2008. Barack Obamas election is our opportunity to bring the change UFCW members and their families deserve. I want to especially congratulate every UFCW Local Union that participated in our election efforts. You broke all records. UFCW Gold was everywhere, and more importantly, UFCW Gold made a difference. We should all be proud! Recently we celebrated now we go back to work. It is our time now. With Barack Obamas victory, we can start on our agenda to restore the American Dream. The change we need will not happen overnight. It will not just happen because we won an election. We have to help President Obama make it happen. We have begun calling our elected representatives and senators and telling them the UFCW will be working with them, side-by-side, on an agenda for working America. We are telling them that they can count on UFCW Gold, and that we are counting on them to vigorously take up and pass the Employee Free Choice Act. That is our priority! November 4, 2008, was a great moment in our countrys history; we must seize the moment and work with our new President and Congress in order to ensure that our members and all working families reap the rewards of our outstanding effort. Union Dues Increase January 1, 2009
At the 2008 Sixth Regular Convention of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the delegates voted to amend Article 18 (A) 3 of the International Constitution, which sets forth per capita tax to the International Union. The UFCWs mission is to improve the lives of our members and organize more workers in our core industries. To accomplish these goals, the International Union must have the proper resources. Accordingly, the delegates at the Convention adopted a $1.00 per capita tax increase, which becomes effective December 1, 2008. In conjunction with this per capita tax increase, Article 38 (A) 3 of the International Constitution provides for a simultaneous automatic increase in Local Union dues of $2.00 per member per month, or 46¢ per week. However, Local 2008 will not be implementing this increase until January 1, 2009.

En la Convención Regular del 2008 de la United Food and Commercial Workers Union Internacional en Montreal, Québec, Canadá, los delegados votaron para aceptar el Articulo 18 (A) 3 de la Constitución Internacional, la cual declara un cuarto de aumento de impuesto a la Unión Internacional. La misión de la UFCW es mejorar las vidas de nuestros miembros y organizar mas trabajadores en nuestra rama industrial. Para llegar a estas metas, la Unión Internacional tiene que tener sus propios medios. En acuerdo, los delegados en la Convención adoptaron a un $1.00 el aumento de impuesto, que entrara en efecto en Diciembre 1 del 2008. SOLIDARITY IS THE KEY
We all have had our ups and downs this year. Unfortunately, we have had plant closings and hundreds of lay-offs. We certainly wish the best for our members. However, we have been successful in contract negotiations. Recently we completed Pinnacle Foods negotiations, which was ratified by 85%, with one of the largest pay increases for that plant, but our work is not done. This coming year, we have over 12 contracts to expire, so we must all stand together in solidarity to ensure that our members get what they deserve.

Todos nosotros hemos tenido nuestras altas y bajas en este año. Desafortunadamente, hemos tenido cierres de plantas y cientos de desempleados. Nosotros les deseamos lo mejor a nuestros miembros. Pero también hemos tenido victoriosamente contratos bajo negociaciones. Recientemente nosotros finalizamos las negociaciones con la Compañía de Pinnacle Foods Group, LLC, en la cual se ratifico con el 85% y uno de los mas grandes aumentos que se haya obtenido en esta planta, pero nuestro trabajo no ha terminado. Active Ballot Club
(ABC) Drawing
The 2008 Active Ballot Club (ABC) Drawing will be held during the December General Membership Meeting. Prizes will consist of gift cards ranging from $25.00 to $1,000.00. To be eligible to win, you must be an Active Ballot Club participant. To participate, you must have signed a checkoff authorization voluntarily to have your employer make an ABC deduction each pay period, which is then forwarded to the Union Office. For every $1.00 you contribute, your name will be entered into the drawing; i.e., $1.00 equals one entry, $10.00 equals ten entries, etc. Its not too late to be included see your Union Representative or Steward, or call the Union Office at 1-800-828-2008. You do not have to be present to win.
