WHO WE ARE
WELCOME TO ISEP
The ISEP Network is more than just a study abroad program. As a nonprofit membership
organization of 300 institutions in the United States and 41 other countries, ISEP has
provided affordable study abroad and exchange experiences to over 34,000 students since 1979.
Because of ISEP’s unique partnership with member institutions, you will have access to your
host university’s courses, services, and activities just like any local student. Your designated
on-site ISEP Coordinator will provide an orientation program, coordinate housing
arrangements, assist with registration, and serve as your local resource.
5 StEPS For APPlyIng
1 Make an appointment with your local ISEP Coordinator or International
Office.
2 Read the ISEP Web site for application guidelines and download the ISEP
application from www.isep.org.
Application must be received at ISEP by February 15 for departure in June,
3
July, August or September; September 1 for departure in January, February
or March. Applications are accepted after these dates if space is available
and enough processing time remains. Your university may also have a
slightly earlier internal deadline so check with your ISEP Coordinator.
4 Submit application directly to your local ISEP Coordinator.
5 Your Coordinator will be notified about the status of your application
approximately 6-8 weeks after it arrives at ISEP.

ISEP OPTIONS AND COSTS
WELCOME TO ISEP
ISEP-Exchanges
Reciprocal exchange programs allow you to exchange places with
other ISEP students at member universities for a semester or an
academic year.
• U.S. to International ISEP-Exchanges (e.g. between Texas and Spain) are available at
sites marked with an E.
• International-to-International ISEP-Exchanges (e.g. between Mexico and France) are
available at sites marked with an I.
• A $345 placement fee is paid to ISEP.
• You pay a fee to your home university based on the cost of tuition, fees, housing, and
meals at your home institution.
• This program fee creates a set of benefits for an incoming ISEP student to take your place.
• Abroad, you receive the same set of benefits (tuition and fees, student services,
housing, meals, and orientation) at no additional cost.
ISEP-Direct
ISEP-Direct provides affordable fee-paid programs in the U.S. and 29
other countries. The chance of placement is very good at most sites.
• For ISEP-Direct, you pay a fee to ISEP based on the actual cost of operating the
program that covers tuition, orientation, student services abroad, and often housing
and meals.
• The $60 application fee, $500 deposit, and program fees are paid to ISEP. Details are
2010-11 International Students Catalog
on the Web site.
ISEP-Summer
ISEP-Summer programs are offered on either ISEP-Exchange or ISEP-
Direct and focus on language and culture or a special academic topic.
AddItIonAl CoStS
• ISEP health insurance (Approx. $55 USD/month)
• Language proficiency test (TOEFL/IELTS)
• Books and supplies
• Airfare, passport and visa fees
• Refundable housing deposits
• Personal expenses and spending money

FINDING THE RIGHT SITE
WELCOME TO ISEP
Researching universities of interest based on the following factors will help you
find the site that is best for you. Find out all you can about what is
specifically offered before you decide where to apply.

“Don’t only consider the big cities; you will have a lot more fun in
smaller towns. I believe that integrating within the college life is
more important than travelling every weekend to a different state

STUDY IN THE USA
STUDY IN THE USA
Throughout its history, people have regarded the United States as a land
of opportunity, and this is still true for visiting students. Studying in the
U.S. with ISEP can help perfect your English skills, build your résumé,
and provide a range of academic topics to complete your degree.
Studying in the U.S. offers not only a great education, but also the
experience of a lifetime. You’ll see firsthand the diversity of the States
with its beautiful landscapes and national parks, lively, multicultural
cities and welcoming, friendly people.
Higher Education in the United States
Rather than a single national system of higher education, each state is responsible for the
regulation of its institutions of higher learning, both public and private. These types of
institutions can vary considerably.
PUblIC (or StAtE) UnIVErSItIES
• Founded by U.S. state governments
• Offer a wide range of academic programs
• Enroll tens of thousands of students
• Class sizes may be large, especially for general lecture courses
• Most offer graduate and professional degrees as well as
undergraduate degrees
• Funded by the states in which they are located, by tuition (which
is lower for residents of that state), public and private research
grants and gifts
PrIVAtE (IndEPEndEnt) CollEgES And UnIVErSItIES
2010-11 International Students Catalog
• Governmentally approved, but founded by an individual or
organization
• Usually enroll fewer than 3,000 students
• Focus on undergraduate teaching although many also offer
graduate degrees
• Classes are usually small with many opportunities for interaction
with professors
• May have higher tuition costs which are fully covered by your
reciprocal ISEP-Exchange benefits
• May be secular or affiliated with a religious denomination, but all
are independent colleges and have a strong sense of community
“Hendrix is a JEWEL hidden in Arkansas. It is a very friendly place, with a beautiful

UNDERGRADUATE OR GRADUATE
STUDY IN THE USA
UndErgrAdUAtE StUdEntS
• Students in the U.S. in their first 4 years of university are called undergraduates, and
are pursuing Bachelor degrees.
• Undergraduate programs are highly flexible, allowing students to choose a variety of
courses and create their own unique program of study.
• In addition to coursework in a major field, students are required to take a number of
courses in the arts, humanities, languages, and the social and physical sciences. Most
students are also able to take optional elective courses.
• After completing the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.) and often
after working for a couple of years, those who wish to pursue further studies apply to
graduate school.
grAdUAtE StUdEntS
• Graduate programs, which are much more specialized, lead to a Master’s Degree
(usually after four semesters) or a Doctorate (Ph.D.) after further course work and a
dissertation.
• Professional programs such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary science, and
law are offered at the graduate level only, although undergraduates take “pre-med” or
“pre-law” courses to prepare for further study.
• Note: Medicine, veterinary science, and dentistry are closed to ISEP students. Law
school courses are usually not open, but you may find courses in other departments
that are usually part of the Law curriculum in your country.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
STUDY IN THE USA
English Language Proficiency
All ISEP member institutions in the U.S. require proof of English
language proficiency from international students who are not native
English speakers. The only exception is Puerto Rico, where students
must be proficient in Spanish.
Most U.S. institutions require an official TOEFL test score. Many sites
may accept an ‘institutional TOEFL’ or other alternatives such as
IELTS, MELAB, Cambridge certificates or SAT scores. Many
institutions will accept the ISEP Language Proficiency Report
completed by an English language professor from your home university.

If the TOEFL is required by the sites on your application, ISEP must receive
the official copy of your TOEFL before placement can be finalized.
To be considered in the placement round starting February 15th, you
should take the TOEFL test by January 1. For applications due on
September 1, you should take the test by July 15.
Test results must be sent directly to the ISEP Central office from ETS.
If you are taking the paper-based or internet-based test, list the ISEP

ISEP-Exchanges are not designed for students who wish to take
full-time English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Some U.S.
institutions may offer ESL in addition to regular academic course-
work. ISEP-Direct USA (fee-paid; non-exchange) programs do offer
ESL courses. See page 23 for more information.

TIPS FOR APPLYING
STUDY IN THE USA
It is important to understand that universities in the U.S. can only accept a certain number
of ISEP-Exchange students based on the number of U.S. students sent to ISEP members
abroad. You will need to carefully consider sites with the best chance of placement.
Additional qualifications for placements will depend on your transcript, references,
personal essay and your language test score. Chances of placement also depend
on the number of other international students applying for that institution.
3 EASy StEPS to gEt thE PlACEmEnt yoU WAnt
Research carefully each institution that interests you on the ISEP Web site.
1 Pay special attention to academic notes and language requirements.
If you need courses at the graduate level, be sure the institution
accepts graduate-level students.
Select 10 sites of interest to list on your application in the order of
preference. Read the Anticipated Openings on the ISEP Web site to see
where you have the best chance of being accepted.
One of your top three choices should be an institution that has an Excellent,
2 Good, or Fair chance of placement in the Anticipated Openings list.
If interested in a Restricted site, it must be listed as your FIRST CHOICE on
your application. You may only apply to ONE Restricted site.
Be sure that you do not apply to any Closed sites.
You will need to research courses offered at each university of interest (go
www.isep.org
3 to the university’s Web site) and list these on separate Course Request Lists
for the ISEP application. A carefully prepared list increases your chances of
placement.
The Placement Process
Your application will be reviewed by an ISEP program officer, who
will place you at an institution that matches your needs and
interests. Your application will then be sent to that institution for
review and confirmation. About 95% of international applicants are
placed and confirmed by their host institution. Your home ISEP
Coordinator will be able to tell you when and where you have been
placed and confirmed.

J-1 EXCHANGE VISITOR VISA
STUDY IN THE USA
All ISEP students who study in the U.S. are sponsored under ISEP’s J-1 Exchange Visitor
Program visa. ISEP is authorized to issue the “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor
(J-1) Status,” known as a “DS-2019.” Students use the DS-2019 form to obtain their J-1 visa
from the U.S. Consulate Office after they have been confirmed at a U.S. university.
The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs administers the visa
program, which provides foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in exchange
programs in the U.S.
Working in the USA
Employment in the U.S. can be academically, culturally and
personally enriching and help build your résumé. There are no
additional fees, but students must complete documents and receive
prior authorization from ISEP before working.
on-CAmPUS EmPloymEnt dUrIng thE SEmEStEr
It is expected that you will have sufficient financial means to
participate in an ISEP-Exchange without the need to work.
There is, however, an option at most U.S. universities to work on-
campus for up to 20 hours per week. The job does not have to relate
to your studies.
ACAdEmIC trAInIng
Allows semester participants to work up to 4 months or full-year
2010-11 International Students Catalog
participants to work up to 9 months.
Most ISEP students do Academic Training after their semester so that
they can remain in the U.S. longer and work 40 hours per week.
The job or internship must be directly related to and an integral part of
your major field of study at your host institution in the United States.

Northeast
USA: NORTHEAST
STUDY IN THE USA
With its rich history and lush natural scenery,
the Northeast is a terrific destination for
studying abroad. The northern region of
New England includes Connecticut, Maine,
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island,
and Vermont, while the Mid-Atlantic region includes
Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania,
and Washington D.C. These states are some of the oldest in the
nation and represent nine of the thirteen original American colonies. The
long-standing heritage of the region may explain why its people are independent, proud,
and highly value individualism.
The Northeast is home to several major metropolitan areas.
Experience the legendary bright lights of New York City by seeing a
Broadway show or taking in the view from the top of the Empire State
Building. Travel to Boston to see the famous “tall ships” or visit
nearby Plymouth Rock. Sample a cheese steak and see the Liberty
Bell in Philadelphia.
In Washington, D.C., explore a treasure trove of museums and
monuments, from the Smithsonian to the Lincoln Memorial. Taste an
authentic Maryland crab cake and tour the Inner Harbor in Baltimore.
Head to Pittsburgh, a former steel town, to take part in the Three
Rivers Regatta or take the incline up to Mount Washington for a
spectacular view of the city.

Of course, the big cities of the Northeast are just the start of your
adventures. Nature lovers will feel right at home here. The Northeast
is known for its beautiful seasons, perhaps most notably the rich
autumn foliage and the snowy winters. Skiers can hit the slopes on
the mountains of almost every state in the region. Swim or sail in
Vermont’s Lake Champlain or in the Atlantic Ocean. Hike a portion of
the Appalachian Trail, which extends from Maine in the North to
Georgia in the South. Scramble from the rocky shores of Cape Cod to
the lush forests of the Acadia National Park and discover all the
Northeast has to offer.
“St. Lawrence University has a rich variety of sport activities and has a lot of
different jobs that are available for exchange students. For those who are ‘city
people,’ SLU is not the best choice. However, if you like the nature and prefer a
smaller place, SLU is a terrific choice.”

Midwest
USA: MIDWEST
STUDY IN THE USA
Midwesterners are praised for being friendly,
straightforward, and humble people who
generally embrace traditional values and proudly
represent America’s heartland. People from
the Midwest form a smaller mosaic of the greater
American society, with enclaves of Scandinavians in the
upper Midwest, Middle Easterners in Michigan, Slavs in the
big cities, and Native Americans in the western section.
From steamy summers to snowy winters, the Midwest distinctly
experiences the four seasons. Most people come from small or
medium-sized cities, although in the more industrial eastern part of
the Midwest you will find large cities such as Chicago, Indianapolis,
Cincinnati, and Detroit.
The western region focuses on agriculture and has been dubbed
“America’s breadbasket.” Much of the land is flat and used for
farming; however in some areas you can find small mountains and
rolling hills, such as the Black Hills in South Dakota and the Ozark
Mountains in Missouri.
The Great Lakes, comprising the largest group of freshwater lakes in

Famous sites of the Midwest include the presidential icon Mt.
Rushmore, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home of the Indy
500), Cedar Point (the world’s largest amusement park), and
Chicago’s Sears Tower.

With the Great Plains to the east and the
Rocky Mountains to the west, the Mountain
States are home to the silver mining “Wild
West” and the rugged American cowboy. The
wide open spaces, spectacular scenery, and diverse
wildlife are the perfect backdrop for the determined,
adventuresome, and always hopeful and respectful people of
the Rocky Mountain Region.
Although predominantly rural, the region boasts a mix of charming
mountain and ranching towns and high-tech, culturally-rich
metropolitan areas with restaurants, nightclubs, theatres, and
museums in cities such as Boise, Colorado Springs, Denver, Helena,
Jackson, Park City, and Salt Lake City.
What draws people to this region beyond these strong, inviting
communities are the many outdoor activities (biking, hiking, rock
climbing, skiing/snowboarding, water rafting) offered by its breath-
taking natural wonders, which are products of the region’s attractive
warm, sunny summers and brilliant, snowy winters: Garden of the Gods,
Red Rocks Amphitheater, Rocky Mountain National Park (Colorado);
Hell’s Canyon and Shoshone Falls (Idaho); National Bison Range and
Glacier National Park (Montana); Great Salt Lake and Zion National Park
(Utah); and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (Wyoming).
Combining all of this with its low cost of living, low crime rates, and

West Coast
USA: WEST COAST
STUDY IN THE USA
The western states of America have long
been regarded as the “Last Frontier.” Originally
settled by the Russians, Spaniards, Mexicans
and Native Americans, these roots are reflected
in landmarks all along the western coast. Alaska, the
detached neighbor to northwestern Canada, has the
distinction of being the 49th state to join the U.S. in 1959.
This “Last Frontier” continues to attract people from a wide variety
of backgrounds.
The largest populations in the West include Asians, Hispanics, and
persons of European descent. People are often characterized as open,
friendly, laid back and environmentally conscious; however, most
people are highly dependent on their cars and a friendly conversation
is not always an invitation to begin a friendship.
The West is known for its varying landscape and weather, all of which
can be experienced within a few hours’ drive. Coastal regions often
stay temperate year-round, although the ocean waters can be quite
cold. Hot and dry desert/agricultural regions produce everything
from Washington apples to California grapes. Lush redwood forests,
snow-capped mountains, and beautiful national parks provide many
outdoor activities.
Alaska is much cooler and features natural anomalies such as the

midnight sun and the aurora borealis. Seasons in the West are less
dramatic than in its eastern neighbors, although you may still require

Southwest
USA: SOUTHWEST
STUDY IN THE USA
The Southwest region of the U.S. is like a
country of its own, with its distinct history,
culture, foods, and landscapes. Booming
economies fueled by great oil production are still
present, and there really are cowboys on horses at
cattle ranches. Southwest cities have also grown as
modern, technological, and cultural centers.
Texas’ capital city of Austin is one of the most international,
cosmopolitan and lively cities in the U.S., not to mention a renowned
music center. Additional ISEP sites are available in a trendy Dallas
suburb, the beautiful Piney Woods, or on the U.S. - Mexico border.
Las Cruces, New Mexico, offers a warm and sunny setting nestled in
a majestic valley surrounded by mountains. Historic Wild West sites,
caverns, and skiing are nearby. The culture is influenced by Mexico to
the south and the historical presence of Native Americans still found
throughout the area.
A feature of any visit to Arizona is America’s greatest natural wonder,
the Grand Canyon. Along northern Arizona, the large Ponderosa Pine
forests, snowy winter weather and picturesque mountains offer a
stark contrast to the desert regions typically associated with the
state. Generally, most of the Southwest landscape is dry, and the

in the south, and the rolling hill country in between offers a diversity
of attractions and activities.
The people of the Southwest are considered some of the friendliest in the U.S., although
often conservative in their personal and political beliefs. It is not uncommon for strangers to
strike up a conversation, for people to wave from their cars, or for everyone to want to help
each other. The easy-going, slow lifestyle in the small agricultural towns offer a great
chance to get to know the locals, and the international cities offer a wealth of diversity.
Border Sites
Their unique location on the U.S.-Mexico border gives
ISEP sites in Laredo (TAMIU), El Paso (UTEP) and Las
Cruces (NMSU) a distinct cultural atmosphere. The
majority of the population here is Hispanic, and many
of the students at the university are often Mexican
citizens. Hispanic culture thrives throughout the cities,
where the renowned delicious and spicy Mexican food
is at its best.

“It surprised me the most how hospitable and friendly everyone is. Also, the Mexican
culture is really family-oriented as well as hospitable. It was a great area to study
and to feel welcome. The host university is big but you can walk in ten minutes
to almost everywhere. All the sport games are for free, and the activity center at
NMSU is excellent.”

South
USA: SOUTH
STUDY IN THE USA
It’s no surprise that many of America’s
leaders—from George Washington to Bill
Clinton—called the South home, for it is perhaps
the most distinctively American region of the United
States. Though frequently stereotyped, Southern
culture is remarkably diverse. Southern cuisine includes
not only Kentucky fried chicken but also the sweetest pecan
pie and spicy jambalaya from Baton Rouge.
World leaders like Jimmy Carter have represented traditional Southern
values on the international stage, and literary greats like William
Faulkner have depicted them in their novels. Likewise, Southerners
listen not only to country music legends like Johnny Cash but to rock
and roll icon Elvis Presley and bluegrass great Ricky Skaggs.
Locals may invite you to experience all that the South has to offer
with their legendary Southern hospitality. See the past through the
eyes of America’s earliest settlers at Jamestown, or relive the
crusade for civil rights in Mississippi. Explore the world-class Georgia
Aquarium, or get back to nature with a hike on the Appalachian Trail.
Sample the delicacies of the region and bite into a fresh Florida
orange, a ripe Georgia peach, or a salty Virginia ham. Take in the
excitement of the car races at Daytona, or a horse race at the
Kentucky Derby. The South is as diverse as America, and offers

possibilities limited only by your imagination.
“ISEP really is an experience of a
lifetime. I would do it again and I
recommend it to every student who
has the chance to study in the US.
My host university, Agnes Scott, is
so different from other universities.
It’s an all-girl college and it was
really nice to see how everything
works there.”

Puerto Rico
USA: PUERTO USA
STUDY IN THERICO
Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island located
south of Florida and east of the Dominican
Republic. It is famous for its diverse tropical
landscape, beautiful beaches, warm Caribbean
climate, salsa music, and most importantly the
friendly and hospitable people.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States
and the official languages are Spanish and English, although Spanish
is the dominant language. All coursework is in Spanish, which makes
it a great destination for Spanish speakers – especially those who do
not wish to take the TOEFL (no TOEFL score is required) or receive a
low score, but still want to study in the U.S.
ISEP students have the option of studying in Puerto Rico’s vibrant capital of San Juan or on
the southwestern coast in Mayagüez.

shores that it is sometimes difficult to maintain your attention on the books.
Nevertheless, the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez offers great study
