Clinical trial shipments have to be maintained within a narrow temperature range to ensure the quality of the
specimen. This project aims to test the reliability of some commercially available insulated packaging designed
for cold-chain shipments by subjecting the packaging to a series of simulated transportation conditions such as
drastic change in external temperature.
Major Tasks: To familiarize with the use of quality engineering equipment, namely the shaker, the drop tester
and the environmental chamber.
To research on various types of shipping packages available for cold chain shipment
To test the reliability of insulated shipping packages using the quality engineering tools.
Project Description
After the commissioning of the equipment in integrated supply chain lab (i-SAIL) located at E2, this project aims
to study the health and safety aspects of i-SAIL. Students will design and implement systems to ensure the
health and safety of people working in the lab.
Major Tasks
1. Study the functions of the equipment and the ergonomics of the workspace in i-SAIL.
2. Design methods / systems to improve the health and safety of personnel / visitors to i-SAIL, taking human
factors into consideration.
Project Background:
This project is in collaboration with Iwow Connection, a mobile phone and wireless communications
manufacturer. in year 2007, We have enabled Iwow in the general warehouse layout and design, location
system design, part number system design and Open source ERP evaluation. For 08/09, we are looking to
continue in this effort but looking from overall supply chain perspective.

In 2007/2008, the web based inventory tool system is being developed to help NHC to optimize stock
availability and improve delivery performance by analyzing supply and demand data. We are looking into
enhancement of the system; application and customization with 1-2 other companies for 08/09. Inventory
System Integration with POS system and retail logistics system such as Planogram and GIS & User
interfaces should be reviewed together with selected software evaluation. The design should help in Retail
collaborative planning, forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) and maximize sales with minimum operation

Project Description:
RFID is a technology that is used to track the goods in the supply chain. RFID Manager is developed in 2007. This
software is installed in a computer that is connected to the RFID scanner. It can process some of the product
information captured by RFID tags when the goods are scanned, like product name and quantity. Now we need
to improve it so that, if we deploy it in different warehouse and move the goods between these warehouses,
the shipping time can be obtained from the software.

Main tasks:
1. Understand the RFID Manager functions;
2. Enhance RFID Manager to retrieve shipping time when goods are moving;
3. Test and deploy RFID Manager at NEC Lab and i-SAIL (supply chain lab);
4. Analyze the data collected during the testing.

Manufacturer can hasten their outgoing products through adoption of RFID tag applicator and RFID gantry
compared to bar coding system. And they are able to interface information captured by tags to EPC IS. Supply

Real-time warehouse gantry and smart-shelves information updates are important to logistics personnel in-
charge of inventory. This helps in the replenishment of goods on the shelves and also planning cycle and safety
inventory. The project involves careful study into various RFID readers, obtaining and integrating the necessary
network infrastructure components for realizing the project objectives.

Tasks:
1. Study the technical specifications of the implemented RFID reader, server and network architecture for the
project

Currently, there are few or no Supply Chain Management Best Practices database(s) available in the market.
Though there may be literature reviews/articles on supply chain best practices, they are usually not organized
and the information not consolidated/specific enough. They may only be information available pertaining to a
specific company or a specific area (e.g. supplier development, procurement).


There are currently no database(s) which gives an overview of the supply chain best practices in a supply chain
flow, which includes both the demand and supply sides.

Project Objective(s):
The objective of this project is to develop a learning database on the supply chain management (scm) best
practices of top companies (E.g. Top companies in AMR Research ranking, Dell, Toyota, IBM, Nokia, and
Motorola.) This would include mainly literature research as well as interviews/ surveys with these companies.
The project scope would constitute both the demand and supply sides of the supply chain, in order to provide a
more complete picture of the supply chain.

EPCglobal Network is an emerging global network aiming for immediate, automatic and accurate identification
of any items in the supply chain of any company, in any industry, anywhere in the world .It leverages on RFID
and internet technology etc.

Project Objective(s)
The project is to do a survey among the Singapore selected companies on their requirements and demands on
EPCglobal technologies in their supply chain. The result findings will then be compiled and analyzed.

that can be used to map process and derive metrics to improve supply chain performance

affected and what kind of systems that is required in place. How much resources for desired throughput at
minimal cost, at reasonable customer service level is not known.

Develop a flexible simulation model that enabled SMEs to visually see how the processes in the warehouse
change when different equipment, resources and systems are mobilized in ISAIL.
Aid companies in selecting the right combination of equipment with resources and systems to meet their
operational requirements.
