Default Vocabulary Files The ChatPC (CPC) is supplied with pre-made vocabulary files that you may customise for your own use. These consist of a set of linked pages with basic vocabulary already stored. These are:
16 Basic & 16 Primary: A basic sample starter vocabulary file that shows Some of the navigational capabilities of the CPC • Pages are organized by settings • Some pages have 2 levels of navigation.
VocabPC: A vocabulary file organized into, General Talking, Categories, Activities • Carrier sentences with automatic navigation • Question words • Conversation vocabulary • Time-related vocabulary • Categories (naming words) • Activity Vocabulary • The included manual contains, customizing hints, teaching strategies, flashcards and vocabulary documentation

Customise a Default Vocabulary File
Read Only – all default vocabulary files are set to “read only” to ensure the integrity of the file Save As – creates a copy of the vocabulary file including each page Rename - changes the name of a vocabulary file • Open the default vocabulary file to copy • Go To Edit Menu • Choose Edit Mode • Go To File>Vocab File>Save Vocab File As • Name the file to reflect the client/child using it
Create a New Vocabulary File
• • • • • Go To Edit Menu Choose Edit Mode Go To File>Vocab File>New Vocab File Give it a name that reflects the client/child Create a home page Set this as the Home Page for the Current Vocab file

Modifying a Button on an Existing Page – Editing The Message
In this example we are going to edit the Name button on the Home Page

Go To Edit Menu Choose Edit Mode Navigate to the page to modify Tap and hold down button you wish to modify (name) Select Edit Button Tap Message window Edit message (change name), remember to add a space at the end Select OK. (On the top right-hand-side of the screen) Tap on button to listen to new message

Modifying a Button on an Existing Page – Changing the Button Action
This tab allows you to define what a button does, for e.g. Speak a Message then Clear the Display, Navigate to another Page, Navigate to the home page, Increase or Decrease Volume, etc

Modifying a Button on an Existing Page – Changing the Button Style
This tab allows you to edit the button Color, Border, Label Position, Force This (disabled after testing)

Creating a Page
**(You need to be Edit Mode)**
Option 1: A Brand New Page • From the Edit menu go to Edit Mode • Tap and hold in Display • Choose Page • Choose Create New Page • Type the name for your new page • Select the number of Rows and Columns (tap on triangles) • Select Create

Option 2: From Template Page • From the Edit menu go to Edit Mode • Tap and hold in Display • Choose Create New Page from Template • Select one of the Template Pages • Go To Edit>modify Vocabulary>rename>Page • Select the copied page, for e.g. Temp4x4_copy • Select Choose • Click into the box containing the Name of the Template Page • Maximise keyboard • Type in Desired Page name • Minimise keyboard • Select Rename Add words, change picture and labels, Save when complete
Adding a word/message to a Button on a New Page
In this example we are going to add a button to the Template Page we just created
From the Edit menu go to Edit Mode Choose Modify Vocabulary> Edit>Page Choose the Page to modify (Select your new template Page) Tap and hold down the button to modify Select Create New Button Type in Label, if required. (Remember to maximise keyboard) Type in Message and add a space at the end of each phrase, word or sentence. (Remember to maximise keyboard) • Search for An Image. Then press Select to obtain chose image. • Select the Tab at the bottom of the screen called Actions • View the available Button Actions by tapping onto the drop down menu and then scrolling. • Selected the desired Action, and then choose Add. ** You may Remove an Action that has been incorrectly selected or is no longer required by highlighting the Action and then selecting, Remove.** • Select OK on the Top Right-hand corner of the display.

Linking a page
In this example we are going to link our Template Page to the Home Page

From the Edit menu go to Edit Mode Navigate to the Page you wish to link from Tap and hold down the button to link from Select Edit Button Select the Actions Tab in the top right of your screen Tap onto the drop-down box to scroll thru and highlight the Navigate Action Select Add Scroll thru the pages and select the page you wish to navigate to Select Choose Change the label Change the picture Select OK Test the key

Adding a Recorded Message
**(You need to be Edit Mode)**
The microphone is located at the top of the ChatPC. The voice of the individual doing the recording needs to be directed toward the Microphone. There is a limit of 45 seconds per recording.

Navigate to the button you wish to record to Tap and hold down the button Select Edit Button. Select the Actions Tab in the top right of your screen Tap onto the drop-down box to scroll thru and highlight the Play Audio action. Select Add (A dialog for selecting the sound file (in wav format) will pop up.)
• Tap on the Record button. Note: ChatPC will immediately begin to record sound through the device’s built-in microphone and the Record audio dialog will appear.
• Tap on Stop when you’re done recording. • Tap the Play button to listen to your recording • If you are pleased with the recording, choose OK • Tap Apply Change picture and labels if you so wish • Select OK on the Top Right-hand corner of the display
Importing a Photo
The DesktopChat programme and ActiveSync must be pre-installed on the computer you plan to use to import the picture. The picture or pictures you want to use must also be on this same computer • • • • • • • Open a copy of the client’s latest vocabulary file using the DesktopChat software Go to the View menu Choose Edit Mode Tap and hold on the blank key Choose Import Browse thru your PC’s hard disk for the photo/image you wish to use, then double click to select Once you have selected the image you wish to import, click on OK
This image will now sit in the Images folder of the CPC and may be reused.

Transferring A Vocabulary File from the ChatPC M3/M3+ to the DesktopChat
DesktopChat and ActiveSync must be installed onto your PC prior to starting this process

Connect CPC to PC using the provided USB cable ActiveSync may open on its own on the PC, if not open it from the programmes listing, Choose Cancel Active Sync so you are in as a guest Open up Desktop Chat on the PC
ON THE CPC
• Go to File and Select Export • Choose the Vocab File you wish to transfer (copy to PC) • Select Export Cpc will ask you to wait and your PC will tell you that files are being transferred
ON THE PC (using desktop Chat)

A window should appear informing you that files are being transferred Select Load Vocab File Select the imported file from the list of available files

DesktopChat and ActiveSync must be installed onto your PC prior to starting this process ON THE PC (using desktop Chat)

ON THE CPC
If your new vocab file has been copied from one of the standard CPC vocab files and then modified, the CPC will inform you that some items already exist in the library and do you wish to replace it with the imported item • Select YES TO ALL • CPC will inform you that files are being imported • Go to File then Vocab File • Select Load Vocab File • Select the imported file from the list of available files You may disconnect the CPC from the PC. And close the Synchroniser and Microsoft Active Sync.
