How to Lower Home Energy Bills
We are blessed with the discovery and proper utilization of energy around us.
There are several sources of energy that makes our living easier.

Energy lights up our home every night, keeps us warm during cold winter,
allows us to be entertained, and makes our living pleasant no matter what
time of the day.

And with all the other uses of energy from the moment we check our clocks
in the morning to keeping us warn as we rest during the night, all of us
would agree that it would be so hard to live without it.

We can say that we have sufficient energy supply for a lifetime but that does
not mean that we are not going to conserve it. After all, technology has its
price. And that price is something we have to pay with cash.

And if coping with electric bill is your problem every time you see your bills,
here are the ways on how to lower them:

· Provide good roof coating

A good roof coating deflects heat. And so, insuring that the roof receives a
good coating would mean insuring you that your house would maintain good
temperature on the inside.

· Keep your attic well ventilated.

Your attic is one of the more important parts of your house when it comes to
the cooling system. The attic is your first and probably the most effective
part of your house the keeps the whole house cool. But, in order for your
attic to do its main purpose, make sure that it is well insulated.

Provide vents where the heat can come out during summer. Your attic door
must also be sealed to ensure that the air from our house does not go
through it and vice versa. The attic door can be sealed with weather

· Securing all the leaks.

Leaks contribute to high cost of home energy. Why? It is because air from
your house can easily come out from these leaks. And the air from the
outside can easily enter the house. Both increase the workload of your
heating and cooling system.

You have to remember that air moves according to air pressure and
temperature. Since the temperature of inside your house is most of the time
different from the temperature outside, air moves freely from these leaks.
Making sure that the leaks are sealed would mean less work on your heating
and cooling system and lower electric bills.

Leaks would come from fireplaces, ducts, doors, ceilings, floors, walls,
windows, plumbing penetrations, electrical outlets, fans, and vents.

· Reducing the thermostat

One degree centigrade is equivalent to 5% electric bill savings. Therefore,
keeping your thermostat low will save you a lot of money.

A total saving would also come from switching your thermostat further low
when you are not home or if you are sleeping. The ideal temperature during
winter is not higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

· Limiting the use of water heater

The second largest electric consumer next to your heating and cooling
system is your water heater.

When you wash you clothes, you don’t need to heat the water up. Just use
the water from the faucet. This will save you by as much as 90% in washing
machine energy consumption.

· Use energy efficient material around your home.

There are commercially available materials that would significantly contribute
to the reduction of the cost of home energy. One of these is energy efficient
windows that deflect the outside temperature (whether during winter or
summer) from entering your home.

· Use your appliance efficiently

It is pretty basic for all of us to turn off televisions, air conditioning, stereos
and other electronic gadgets when not using them. However, most still
disregard this.

The reality is; we can save a lot if we only learn how to turn them off if not in
use. Also, small things such as iPod chargers, cellphone chargers, digital
clocks, lights and other things that seem to consume small electric current
that remain plugged day in and day out contribute to your electric bill.
Making sure you unplug them would certainly lower down your monthly
electric consumption.

You have the details. All you have to do is to make sure you follow them all.
How to Make Your House Energy Efficient
One requirement of a house is that it should be comfortable to live in. Of
course, many people will say that a house cannot be called that if it cannot
be inhabited.

In order to make a house comfortable, certain aspects of civilization are
required. We need to have the benefits of technology within the house in
order for us to live in it.

Let’s face it: few of us can live without the benefits of technology. Only by
having the conveniences of our times available do we stand a chance at
actually having comfortable lives.

However, comfort does have a price. In order to have these technological
conveniences we need to consume energy. Energy costs money and, as
people will tell you, money is not easy to come by.

People try to find ways to save money when possible (at least, the smart
ones do). An evidence of this is the way a sale can make a product
immensely popular.

If you take a look around you, you will probably notice that even millionaires
try to save as much money as they possibly can at their level of lifestyle.

In order to save money we, of course, try not to waste any of it. Most people
would rather not spend on anything that they do not need. Electricity bills
have a way of making you feel cheated out of your money.

People feel that electricity bills cannot be controlled, hence, they should just
be paid. This is because people feel that electricity is a necessary part of life
and thus, the costs of electricity cannot be reduced, only paid.

However, if you really try to look into your situation, you might be surprised
to see that there are, in fact, many ways in order to make your house energy
efficient. By having an energy efficient house, you can cut back on the cost
of electricity and only pay for what you are really consuming.

There are many ways to make a house more energy efficient. These methods
are often found by other people to be time-consuming and expensive.

However, those who have chosen to employ these methods find that the
savings you get by having an energy efficient house is definitely worth the

One thing to consider in making an energy efficient house is material. The
materials you use in building a house significantly affect the cost of heating
and cooling. By choosing your materials wisely, you can have a house that
does not consume much energy to maintain a comfortable temperature level.
Another thing to consider is the design. In order to make a house more
energy efficient you’ll need the help of an architect. Some architects actually
specialize in designing energy-efficient buildings. By going to these people,
you can maximize your energy efficiency.

Of course, energy efficient houses may not look like a conventional home. In
fact, these houses may even seem a little strange to those who do not realize
the purpose of energy efficient designs.

However, the technology today has made it possible for architects to
incorporate both forma and function in their house designs. This means that
you may be able to have a very aesthetically pleasing, energy efficient home.

Also, in order to have energy efficient home, you’ll need to take a look at
your surroundings and see if there are any alternative energy sources
available for you to use. By making use of alternative energy sources, you
can significantly lower your electricity bill.

Alternative energy is also known as “free energy” to some people. This is
because of the fact that these energy sources are constantly being produced
through the earth’s natural processes and are thus, available for harnessing.

In order to harness those alternative energy sources for your home use,
you’ll need to have some sort of mechanism or conversion device. Thankfully
enough, many home alternative energy devices are now available in the
market for those who want their homes to be energy efficient.

Energy efficient homes are possible, thanks to the ever evolving technology.
Energy efficient homes show us that it is possible to have all the comforts
offered by modern civilization without paying a very high price.

Why Home Energy Saving Devices are Vital
All of the appliances employed at home contain the so-called switch wherein
there are the on and off indicators. To run the home appliances, they need to
be switched on. On the other hand, when they are no longer in use, they
must be switched off. There is this fact which most homeowners do not
realize though.

The appliances, although they are not switched on and they are not in use,
still consume electricity. Yes, you’ve read it just right. The pattern of the
electricity’s outflow still continues although the appliances are in the off

They are termed as the “phantom loads” and they do consume some great
amount of electricity. Thus, you end up finding your electrical bills in
surmounting rates at the end of the billing period.
Now if you are quite interested to know how these “phantom loads” can be
relatively stopped so that you will be able to save on your energy costs,
better learn the advantage of the home energy saving devices.

The equipment that contain phantom loads are typically recognized since
there are these lights or clocks that continuously operate although the
appliance has already been switched off. Among the appliances that are
gifted with timers that do operate at a pace of 24 hours in a day are the
stereo systems, VCRs, stoves, and microwave ovens.

Devices used at home that are remote control operated also consume energy
all around the clock. These equipment need to be ready all over to be
prompted by the remote control governing them.

Although that state of readiness consumes lesser electricity, imagine the
twenty-four-hour time frame and the energy consumed can be relatively
higher. Among the other devices that generate phantom loads include the
wall warts or DC converters, cordless phones, recharging devices, and

So how do you save on the home energy consumed in each day? How will
you be able to lessen the phantom power created by these devices? One of
the easiest ways that you can commit to is the plugging of the devices into
the switchable six-way outlets.

In this manner, when the appliances have been turned off, you can easily
turn off also the power supply that runs through the outlet. The switchable
outlets are of enough importance for those wall warts or DC converters.

These home energy saving devices run at approximately 60 up to 80% of
efficiency rate. To make the explanation simple and clear, these home
energy saving devices will allow you to save a minimum of six percent on the
entire monthly bill that you will have to pay for.

Updating your home with the use of home energy saving devices will
definitely lessen the amount of electrical power that you consume and
therefore reduce the amount of your electrical bills.

So as to save enough energy consumption, you can likewise improve the
insulation of your home. Insulation may be enhanced in the floors, the walls,
or the ceilings. Windows and doors which are all efficient can entirely make a

You must be cautious though. Before you purchase any home energy saving
devices, you’ve got to test them first. Most people happen to just buy
whatever they come across with.
It is not enough. You don’t want to end up realizing that you failed with your
decision as you discover that the thing you’ve paid for is not worth investing
on. In truth, home energy saving devices come in various brand names and
are widely available.

They are also simple to utilize as you just have to insert the device in
between the wall outlet and the plug of the appliance.

You must be aware that there are two classifications of home energy saving
devices marketed in the stores. The first is that which corrects the lag that
gets in when a motor load is prompted on the power supply.

The second is that which operates simply by the use of the on and off
switches in a way that the average voltage is indeed reduced by the device.

Whichever home energy saving device you wish to purchase is, just make
sure that what you pay for is something which is reliable. This is an
investment and you do not want to fail in this endeavor for sure.

Save Money on Using Kitchen Appliances
Your total monthly energy bill is estimated to be composed of 90 percent
from appliances power consumption. This gives us an important reason to
conserve energy when using appliances.

And the most used of these appliances are those utilized in our home’s
kitchens. So it is just logical that we concentrate on how to save energy
when using kitchen appliances.

Here are some simple but helpful tips on how to save money when using our
appliances through energy conservation.

- Make sure the home kitchen appliances you buy have the Energy Star
label. This is to ensure that the appliance you purchase is energy efficient,
meaning the appliance will give more power and will emit less heat using the
least amount of energy with which it is supplied.

- Keep kitchen appliances that emit too much heat away from each
other such as refrigerators and electric stoves. Appliances tend to utilize
more power when exposed to high temperatures, which leads to more
electricity consumption. To be on the safe side a distance of approximately
eight to ten feet should be kept between heat emitting kitchen appliances.

Now if you can’t maintain this distance between appliances, installing an air
conditioning unit will help keep ambient temperatures low and that will help
save money in the long run.

- when using an oven, make sure that you don’t consume energy when you
don’t really have to. Checking the instructions whether preheating is required
or not is one way to avoid wasting energy. Casseroles and broiled dishes
don’t necessarily require preheating.

- If you are to cook smaller meals or when you have to heat them, use less
energy-consuming kitchen appliances such as toaster ovens, electric skillets,
and broilers in stead of electric stoves. This can help save half the energy
that full-size appliances can consume. Also, a microwave oven can be more
efficient in such a way that it can cook food faster compared to an electric

- Be very choosy when it comes to buying pots and pans. Pans that have
bigger bottoms than the size of the burner won't cook food evenly. Make
sure you cover pots and pans when cooking to allow the food to cook faster
with the help of the trapped steam.

- Have regular maintenance checkups and cleanings scheduled for your
kitchen appliances to keep them working efficiently.

How to Save Water to Protect the Earth and
Your Wallet Too
Water is a precious resource. For just a few hours without water, people can
actually die. Water is also a paid utility – if you use a lot, you pay more.
Because of this, it is important to save water. Here are some ways to save

1. Switch the faucet or shower off when you aren't actually using it. You
don't need the water running after you wet your toothbrush, or while you are
soaping your body or shampooing your hair.

During these moments when you're not using the water, turn the tap off, it
can save you a lot since showering and brushing are things you do everyday.

2. Install low-water flushing toilets that use only one to two gallons of water
per flush. If you have an existing high-gallon toilet, you can put a plastic
bottle filled with sand into the tank. This will help the tank fill up faster, and
use up less water than it would when it is empty.

3. Rinse your shaver in a small basin instead of running water. Fill a small
basin with water and dip your razor in it to rinse. It might not be advisable to
rinse the razor in the sink itself since sinks are full of germs and take more
time to fill.

4. Wash your clothes or dishes in big loads. Washing several small loads uses
up so much water than washing in just one big load. This also helps you save
time and electricity.
5. Instead of using a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalks, use a
broom. Water may not be efficient to remove dust and dirt from your
pavement. A broom will directly sweep away trash and you can easily dispose
of it afterwards.

6. Check all your pipes, faucets, and toilets for leaks to prevent water being
wasted. Even small drips of water from leaking pipes can amount to gallons
of water being wasted in a year.

Check your water system at least twice a year to prevent any leaks from
happening or to quickly repair existing ones.

7. Instead of using the waste disposal system on your sink, make compost
from your scrap foods. Sink disposals use a lot of water. Composts can help
you save the environment as well.

Knowing how to save water can help you protect both the Earth and your
wallet. Keep these things in mind to conserve this precious resource.
See Your Future Bright by Using Compact
Fluorescent Bulbs to Save Money
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information
Administration (EIA), the overall energy consumption in the U.S. is 17,891
trillion British Thermal Units (Btu) more than the past years. This showed an
standard increase of 1.0% every year.

Despite recent economic challenges to help
save, energy consumption is still on the
rise. Sad to say, some consumers aren't
doing their part to save energy, which can
eventually lead to saving money.

Why is this so? It is simply because many
people still aren't aware of the available
solutions to help them save energy and

Consumers have to be aware that saving
money and energy comes down to the
basics of using items that will help
conserve energy. For one thing, the use of
compact fluorescent bulbs has been proven
time and again how they can solve energy
consumption problems and save more

Why Fluorescent Bulbs?

The reason is simple: Compact fluorescent bulbs conserve energy 2/3 less
than the typical incandescent bulbs. The great thing is that even if it
consumes less energy, the performance is still the same, maybe even better.

Another great thing about compact fluorescent bulbs is that they last longer
(10 times compared to incandescent bulbs). Hence, studies show that with
this item, you can save as much as $30, even more, for every fluorescent
bulb you buy. With incandescent bulbs, you need to buy often, spending
more than what your budget will allow.

Moreover, compact fluorescent bulbs are cooler. They produce 70% less heat
as compared to incandescent bulbs. With this, your home cooling system is
maximized, reducing the power needed to generate a cooler environment.
The bottom line, you'll get smaller electricity bills.

By simply using fluorescent bulbs in areas where lighting is mostly needed or
required, you are saving more money for a rainy day. You save more money
in your electricity bill as well as in your budget because you don't have to
replace the compact fluorescent bulbs more often as compared to
incandescent bulbs.

So if you really want to cutback on your electricity bills and save more money
for the future, use compact fluorescent bulbs. You may never know what the
future holds so you need to save more. And with compact fluorescent bulbs,
there will always be light ahead.

Home Energy Saving Devices
If your electric meter is spinning as fast as slot machines for as long as you
can remember, then today is the right time to be concerned. You are paying
large on electric bills month after month right?

And you are still trying to figure out how will you be able to lower down your
energy cost to somehow make paying easier for you.

You see, you are not alone on this problem. Many American households are
trying to find ways on how to lower down their electric bills just like you. To
be specific about it, there are two ways on how to cut the cost of your
electric bill.

One is to minimize the use of your devices. Two is to use home energy
saving devices. The former deals with controlling your use of your devices
and becoming more responsible in using them.

The latter on the other hand entitles you to purchase specific devices to
replace or add on your existing fixtures.

This article emphasizes on the use of home energy saving devices for 2
reasons: 1, home energy saving devices would let you save on electric bills
and 2, it will let you save money without restricting your use of your devices.

Among all electronic devices you have in your home, the home’s heating and
cooling system and the water heating system are the 2 biggest contributors
why you receive big electric bills. Thus focusing on how to reduce
consumption on these two would certainly affect the figures of your electric

From here, we will discuss some ways on how reduce the cost of your
monthly electric bills through the following home energy saving devices:

Home energy saving devices for your heating and cooling system:

Centralized Heating & Cooling – this device would let you set your desired
room temperature on each room. The central control will let you adjust the
temperature even if you are not on that specific room.
This is a great help if you have the tendency to leave the room and leave the
heating and cooling system in its current state. Most households practice this
way. And no one seems to care. But if you do, invest on centralized heating
and cooling system.

Programmable Thermostat – Installing this device would let you set
specific room temperature even if you are not home. The best example to
use this is when you are often leaving the heating and cooling system as is
when you leave home.

Now, you can set the temperature minutes before you come home. Just set a
temperature in a specific time and it will automatically adjust without you.

Remote Control Heating System – Even you are away or if you are just
arriving or if you forget to change the thermostat before leaving, the remote
controlled heating system works best.

With a simple phone call, the thermostat will automatically change. The
remote control heating system has special device to give you this

Home energy saving devices for your water
heating system
The reduction of water consumption would yield to many good effects. And
the number 1 effect we would like to hear is the cost we would save on
electric bills. As the second biggest reason why we receive such large electric
bill, here are the home energy saving devices you can use:

Low-Flow Showerhead – This device would let you save as much as 40%
on your water consumption. And since you are using less water, your water
heating system is less used.

Multi-Setting Showerheads – There are several showerheads with settings
such as pause, spray, pulse, turbo pulse, and outsider spray. These functions
let you save on water and in turn heating requirement.

Toilet Flush Water Saver – This device would let you save as much as
25% of your water consumption.

You may ask: Is it worth to invest on these devices? On the first months
using these devices, you will certainly see the savings you get.

But since you have invested money on these, the first months will literally
just pay you back what you have spent to have these devices. But in the long
run, when you are using these devices for years, savings are evidently felt.
Energy Saving Ratings for Appliances

Home appliances are necessities at home. It would be hard to imagine living
inside your house without any electric equipment.

When the weather is hot or cold, there should be air conditioners and
heaters. Refrigerators help preserve food naturally, while dishwashers and
washing machines help clean dishes and clothes.

Thus, it is inevitable that you find it hard to deal with your monthly electricity
bills. You might be wondering why your electric consumption is still high
when you don't use your appliances that much. When you are at work the
whole day and you come home and use your appliances at night, why does
your electric bill keep on rising?

For you to properly address this electricity consumption problem, you have to
know more about appliances and the amount of energy these items
consume. Your home might be full of different appliances, so how can you
make sure your energy consumption will be controllable?

Experts say that if you have the appliances at your home, all you can do is to
live by the way those equipment consume energy. But if you are yet to
purchase those appliances, there is something you can do to help avoid too
much consumption of energy in your home.

Shopping for energy efficient appliances
Thus, you need to shop for energy efficient appliances. While it is true that
you can't do anything if you already have your appliances, you can
significantly adopt energy saving schemes in buying your home equipment
and devices.

Did you know that home appliances consume more than 20% of your home's
overall energy consumption on a monthly average? Whether you are
regularly or heavily using your appliances, those equipments will still very
much contribute to your high monthly electric bill.

Refrigerators, clothes dryers, clothes washers, dishwashers and electric
stoves are just some of the appliances included in the top energy
consumption list for appliances.

Therefore, when buying appliances for your home, you should consider two
price tags. Of course, the first price tag will be the purchase price for the
appliances. You might be surprised at how several appliances can be really
costly, depending on the brand. You should consider this tag price as a form
of down payment.

The more important and yet to be discovered price tag will be the overall
cost of using or operating the appliances during the entire course of its
operating life time. In fact, the second price tag will be much costlier because
you will be required to pay for it monthly when you shoulder your electricity
consumption bills.

For the entire lifetime of each of your various appliances, you will have to
endure and shoulder the operating costs. And this is where the trouble sets
in. Some appliances just consume too much electricity to be functional.

To shop for appliances, you should first make a short list of which
equipments to buy and how useful they can be. Go to your reliable appliance
retailer and make your purchases.

You could shop for appliances by initially considering and assessing the
brands. Good brands usually offer energy efficient versions of different

You should also ask the sales personnel about the energy consumption
capacity of the appliances you are eyeing. Salesmen should inform you
outright about the projected energy consumption of each and every brand of
appliances their store is selling.

New energy saving ratings
To help you assess the energy consumption capacity of appliances, there are
developed systems for computing such energy uses. There are home energy
and appliances audits to help you determine how much electricity is
consumed by an appliance.

You can use these new energy saving ratings schemes in two ways. First, you
can ask firms that offer such services to come over and assess your home

Their personnel will come and compute the monthly energy consumption of
your appliances, helping you assess how much your appliances contribute to
your bills.

Second, when you are buying appliances at retailers, you can ask about their
new energy saving ratings. Every home equipment shop should have this
helpful feature. Asking for such assistance could help you know more about
appliances sold and decide which energy efficient ones you can practically

During these times when there is a pronounced energy crisis, you should
contribute to electricity conservation. Get appliances that are energy efficient
and dependable.
Cooling Your Air Effectively: Why You Should be
a Fan of Fans
Heat is agonizing for anyone, whether it comes in the form of a hot, confined
room, or a bursting summer sun beating down upon your bare, suntan
lotion-soaked back. If it comes in the form of dry heat, it can make breathing
so much more difficult, as you strive to pull air into your tired lungs.

If the heat comes in the form of humidity, it can dehydrate you quickly and
make you sweat. In either case, heat can keep you from thinking straight
and fulfilling everyday duties that would have otherwise been easier in
cooler, crisper weather.

Summer heat can be especially oppressive, and can make you want to sleep
all day in an air-conditioned room, with only cold air for company. Air
conditioning, however, can be expensive.

Air conditioning units cost money to purchase, maintain, and clean, as air
conditioning filters are often clogged with dust and debris.

If you buy an air conditioning unit and use it regularly, prepare to drain your
savings as you pay higher electric bills. If the heat doesn't give you a
headache, the electric bills can certainly do you in. An alternative exists,
however, in electric fans.

Unlike air conditioning units, fans can be less expensive to purchase and
maintain. They can also be easier to clean and repair, and cost less to
replace. If you are dealing with extreme heat, then you can arrange your
electric fans and home in such a way that you can bring in cold air and keep
the warm air out.

There are many different kinds of electric fans, but the four most popular
ones can be effective in cooling your home. A stand fan can be adjusted to
various strengths and speeds; its height can also be controlled, so you can
receive air whether you are working on the floor, sitting at your desk, or
hanging up drapes and standing on a high table.

A box fan is a smaller electric fan with a rotating face, designed to push air
and circulate it in different parts of a room. A ceiling fan, true to its name,
hangs from a ceiling and pushes cool air down.

Lastly, an exhaust fan is built into a wall, and can help air circulate,
especially in closed surroundings such as warehouses or garages. All of these
electric fans can allow you to spend less on your electric bills.

Because an air conditioning makes use of cooling fluids, it can take up more
energy in converting outside air to cool air, and in removing water vapor
from outside air. Fans, however, allow air to move around and circulate, and
in doing so use much less energy.

If you are shopping around for electric fans, choose brands that are
inexpensive, but stamped with the energy star. This will assure you that you
will get the most power from the fans with the least energy input.

When you use your fans, make sure that they are positioned strategically, so
that you don't waste energy or end up bringing warm air to where you least
want it. In particular, take note of the following tips as you cool your home
using your fans.

Practice cross ventilation. Not every room in your house needs an electric fan
to be cool. You can place a powerful stand fan in one room, open any
adjoining doors, and direct the fan to blow air to the next rooms.

You can also place an exhaust fan high up in one room so that the air is
constantly circulating. To cross ventilate your house, open any windows that
aren't facing the sun. This can allow cool air to come in.

Close windows that are facing the sun, and shield them with curtains, so that
you can lower the temperature of your room faster. You can position electric
fans perpendicular to the open window, so that any incoming air is circulated

If it isn't a windy day, then position the fan at the other end of the room,
facing the window. If it is very humid and hot, then an electric fan may do
you little good on its own. If you have an air conditioning unit, turn it on low
cool or fan mode, then use the electric fan to circulate the hot air.

On its own, the air conditioning unit will take up more energy as the humid
air will be difficult to cool. The electric fan, on its own, will also take up more
energy, as it will have to be operated at higher, faster settings, and for a
longer time, before it can finally cool the air. If you use the electric fan and
air conditioning unit together, you can actually save energy.
Get Lower Utility Bills with the Right Faucet

Paying bills is one of the biggest headaches that
can confront the household. This is quite a heavy
reality because bills often take the bulk of the
budget. It isn't easy to say goodbye to your hard-
earned money.

Since utility services aren't going to cheapen
anytime soon, it is best to seek strategies that will
lower your bills. One effective way is to get your
faucets checked. Make sure that your money isn't
dripping down the drain.

The Problem with a Dripping Faucet

A dripping faucet is a big threat encountered by most households. People
tend to look on the electricity or system aspect. They forget that the most
used part of their kitchens and baths can also contribute to their big

Through regular use, faucets tend to wear and tear. You may notice that
after closing the faucet properly, water may still drip. This is a sign that you
need to replace your faucet soon.

When faucets drip, water continues to be released even if you aren't using it.
The tiny drips that may seem inconsiderable at one glance can actually mean
gallons of water if you let days pass without addressing the problem.

That means extra bucks out of your budget. Thus, you have to make sure
that your faucets aren't dripping.

It is easy to figure out this problem. Dripping water makes a sound when it
hits the sink. You can also check your faucet when not in use.

When there is water in the spout of the faucet, then some water can be
leaking out even if there is no dripping action. These signs should prompt
you to get a replacement soon. You can even hire services to have your
faucets properly checked if you want to be sure.

Types of Faucets for Replacement

Faucets that aren't in good condition require replacement. It is best to
choose your purchase properly. Get a replacement that will be more efficient
for your household use.
Make sure it is the type that won't be dripping anytime soon. Of course, it
should also go along with the rest of the kitchen or bath design. Know the
different faucet types to get the best pick and effectively lower your utility

Ball Faucets

This is a very common type. It can be found in most households. It has a
single handle that is placed over a round cap, just above the spout.

The ball faucet is the type that you have to be cautious with as it tends to
leak more easily compared to others but they are very affordable. Thus you
can easily replace them.

If you think your household companions tend to be careless, then it isn't a
good idea to use the ball faucet.

Compression Faucets

These are quite old when it comes to faucet types. There is a different handle
for the hot and cold water. Both handles have to be tightened to ensure that
water is secured.

It requires additional effort to seal the water flow by compressing the
washer. This is a good choice if you are keen in adjusting properly the
temperature according to your needs.

You might want to think twice about the added compression needed to
secure the water from dripping. They can leak eventually but they are easy
to repair.

Disc Faucets

The disc faucets can be identified by the single handle attached to a
cylindrical body. It operates through the two ceramic discs that control the
water flow. It can also control the temperature of the water released.

They tend to be a good choice against leak and dripping problems. This type
requires very low maintenance but it can be quite pricey.

Cartridge Faucets

You can identify cartridge faucets by trying to operate it. If the lever has to
be moved up and down to let the water flow and right and left for
temperature adjustments, then it is this type.

This is very convenient for operation. You can easily move the lever for
opening and sealing. This tends to last more although it can be an expensive
Dripping problems shouldn't be ignored.

Make sure your faucets are regularly checked so you can immediately effect
a replacement if needed. Choose also the right type of faucet that you will
install for replacement. Through these steps, you are ensured of paying lower
utility bills.

Save Big Money with Water Harvesting
People everywhere are feeling the growing need to save money. Expenses
and bills aren't getting any lower. Living comfortably is becoming more
expensive. Everything comes for a certain price. Thus, any effort that will
help in the goal to save money will surely be welcome.

One effective way to ensure big savings is to find other sources of energy to
support the needs of your household. Water harvesting is one such means.

Water harvesting is a method where energy is created from a renewable
source which is the waves created by the ocean water. Experts were able to
develop a technology where the water in the ocean can be utilized to create
power and turn it into electricity.

If you happen to live near the coastline, then it is only a practical decision to
maximize the water resource near you. Make use of the energy that can be
generated by the ocean waves.

The potential energy generated by the ocean waves can definitely support
your electricity use. You can take opportunity of this to lower your monthly
utility bills.

All you need is to get a design and plan for the ocean wave energy
generation system. Get an Ocean Wave Energy Harvesting unit and you can
utilize the energy generated for your own use.

The present ones developed are efficient in performance. They are also
relatively easy to build.

An Ocean Wave Energy Harvesting unit is your primary tool for money saving
efforts. However, you might worry about the initial outlay you have to extend
for purchasing the unit.

However, keep in mind that this initial expense will be nothing compared to
the big savings you can make when you lower your monthly utility bills.

This method doesn't pollute the environment in any way. It was indicated
that the operation of water harvesting won't adversely impact sea life. Thus
it helps in maintaining a clean atmosphere and sustaining the ecosystem.
With this technology at hand, you get to achieve more than the saving
money. You will also have the chance to contribute to the environment by
securing sustainable a water environment.

Water harvesting is the best way to ensure that the energy needs of the
household are well supported. At the same time, water harvesting will surely
leave you with a clean conscience, knowing full well that you have done your
part in not harming the environment.

Letting Sun Power into Your Water and House
Solar energy is a great resource that scientists have long explored as a
means of providing energy to meet human needs. Thanks to advances in
technology, there are now prototypes of various machines that run on solar

These include solar powered cars, solar-heated homes, and solar-powered
water heaters. In fact, many of these machines have gone beyond the
prototype stage and are being used in many green homes throughout the
world, where their owners are determined to help save the environment by
decreasing their reliance on fossil fuels.

There are many ways to harness the power of the sun to allow our turbines
to run, our water to be heated, and our homes to be conditioned at just the
right temperature.

One such method is the use of the solar panel, which you can often glimpse
as a black platform filled with shining grids that glisten in the sun. This array
of thermal collectors is connected to an appliance that can run on solar

The ability of appliances to run on solar power rests in the power of the
individual grids on a solar panel. Each grid, called a photovoltaic cell or
photovoltaic module, is arranged in a strategic array that is meant to collect
the most sunlight and use the consequent energy most efficiently.

Such photovoltaic arrays are in wide use nowadays, and have enjoyed an
upsurge in production as their manufacturing costs have since diminished.

Photovoltaic cells use semiconductors to utilize sunlight and turn it into
electricity. You can see such cells in your solar-powered calculator,
emergency telephones on the roadside, and even in some large industrial

With the lower cost of maintaining and manufacturing solar panels, you can
use solar energy to heat your water and provide insulation for your home.
If you are interested in using solar energy to heat your water and your
home, then you might want to take note of the following tips. Remember,
that even if using solar energy has decreased in price, it is still relatively
expensive compared with other energy providing and utilizing technologies.

- Always inquire in as many solar energy panels providers as you can. Look
for a solar panel and heating package that can fit your needs and budget.
Look for machinery that can allow you to heat water, your home, and even
power your cooking apparatus. If you can use solar energy widely in your
home, then you can save on your electric bills.

- Solar hot water systems can use sunlight in various ways to heat different
sources of water in your home. You can have hot water through your faucet,
or even route lines to heat your swimming pool.

Inquire at your solar energy panels providers on what packages they have
for water heating, and if their apparatus can heat swimming pools.

Swimming pool water contains different minerals, so it may require various
modifications in conventional heating apparatus in order to keep the minerals
from precipitating out of the water.

There are many advantages of using solar energy to heat your house and
water. Using solar power to power your heating apparatus also entails that
you emit less pollution compared with the use of other energy-generating

Because electric grids and gallons of fuel are difficult to transport to remote
areas, such as deserts and islands, solar panels can be economical and
practical, especially since deserts and islands will often have sun all year

Solar panels are also more practical for transports such as boats or airline
carriers, which need energy without having to transport gallons of fuel or
carry heavy electronic grids.

Despite these advantages, solar power is still expensive compared with grid-
based electricity. Current technology for photovoltaic cells is also limited: you
will need a greater number of photovoltaic cells in order to gather enough
solar energy to drive larger applications.

This can entail higher purchases and maintenance costs. More photovoltaic
cells also require a greater land area, which can be difficult if you live in a
suburban area, where lands and lots are limited.

Solar cells, moreover, produce a direct electric current, which must first be
converted to alternate current, or AC, a change that results in an energy loss
of about four to twelve percent.
Solar energy can still help save the environment, so if you are thinking about
using it for your home and water heating, do as much research as you can.
Make inquiries and compare prices. If you find a package that fits your needs
and budget, then you can go right ahead and help save Mother Earth.

                     Solar Power For Home

Did you know you can heat up your home in winter for free using the natural
resource of the sun? After a minimal outlay of less than $100.00 you can
have continuous warm air flowing in to your home. The Technology is so
simple when explained. Pick the sunniest side of your house.

In the middle of winter you still get the sun shining. By making a rectangular
box placed against an open window you can have warm air flowing in to your
home all day long. This is a best kept secret; many old houses are kept
warm using this technique.

The Principal – You know that your car gets very hot when it is left sitting in
the sun, heating your House this way works on the same principle except
that the air constantly flows through a heating box rather than being closed
up like in your car.

The Design – You will need
to make a rectangular box,
the length is determined by
how far it is from your window
opening to the ground. It
should be the width of the
sunniest window in winter.

One end of the box will fit
your window opening and the
other end will be open sitting
on the ground. The Higher the
window the bigger the box can
be but keep in mind this design is dynamite for pushing hot air into your
house so you will need to incorporate a flap that can be managed from inside
the house.
A series of vents (adjustable) scavenged from a car at your local car
wreckers make ideal outputs but you may need six or more preferably from
the same type of car to keep it aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Make your box about 30 CMs (12 inches) thick for a single story house. For
arguments sake let’s say it should sit at a 40 degree angle, the steeper the
angle the faster the air input.

The sun sits lower in the sky during winter and you may need to adjust the
angle to suit the relative arc of the sun during these months. Fit some wire
netting or even shade cloth over the bottom end to stop unwanted rodents,
insects etc.

The top surface of the box will be glass or Perspex and the inside of the box
will be painted with black paint to attract heat from the sun. If you use
Perspex make sure that it is UV stabilised otherwise it will go yellow and
eventually start to crack and fall apart.

Line the internal sides with silver foil, the sun will reflect off the silver foil to
give it extra oomph. Wire mesh can be used to protect the glass from stray
objects such as your neighbours kids football or hailstones, use wire mesh no
smaller than 1 cm any object falling on to the glass smaller than that is
unlikely to cause damage unless it is dropped from a height and keep the
mesh off the glass by at least two inches.

Finally you should make the lid hinged to give you access to the inside of the
box for maintenance. Spider webs, dust and dirt will accumulate over time so
you will need ready access. If the Hot box begins to lose efficiency check that
the bottom opening is not obscured by foreign objects or grass and weeds.

A 12 volt fan from a car heater mounted inside the box and connected to a
solar panel will add extra flow if you really want to get it pumping. Run some
good quality wiring in conduit to a switch inside the house from the fan to
give it a remote on/off, you will not need an Electrical certificate as it is only
12 Volts and quite safe.

If you consider yourself fairly handy most of this project can be done by
using a little common sense and materials purchased from your local
hardware shop or even scavenged from the Tip which will in turn reduce land
fill and give you that extra sense of accomplishment.

Some nifty paintwork (if you are handy with a brush) on the outside or
simply paint it with earth colours to match the environment will give it that
professional look. There is no limit to what you can do if you use your

How it works.

Hot air rises, as the sun heats the box hot air inside will be sucked up as the
temperature increases. A naturally occurring vacuum will be pushing hot air
into your house at an amazing rate.

You will have to block it off or close the vents when it gets too hot. Obviously
this stops when the sun has passed over but by then your house should be
snug and warm. All of this is fruitless of course if you do not have sufficient
ceiling and wall insulation. A well insulated house will retain warmth for well
over 24 hours.

What You Should Know About Home Energy
Rating System
Energy conservation is one of the considerations that homeowners are taking
into account when they are buying furnishings for their homes. From heating
systems to washers, owners would like everything to be energy efficient.

This is the reason why there are a lot of products out in the market these
days that have with them seals that show how energy effective and efficient
these things are.

Buyers who are conscious of what they want for their homes always look for
this seal. And why not? If it means that they could save on electricity bills,
then they would gladly go for it.

But the issue here is not only about the furniture that runs on electricity. The
main issue is really about the energy that houses are consuming.

There was a time when people cannot control their consumption because
they have no means of measuring or estimating energy. The result? Soaring
electric bills consumption that could have been prevented if owners only
know how to.

With the technology of today, this problem has been eliminated. There is now
home energy rating systems that people can have. This is the answer that
everyone is waiting for to counter his or her energy efficiency and high bill
If you compare this system to something that you can relate with easily, it
would be like that of the meter you have in your car that calculates how
many mileage you have used the car for.

In place of the meter, there would be a person visiting your place. That
person will conduct an inspection of your place and will survey how much
energy you are using by looking at everything from appliances to window
positioning and airflow.

It can be noted that the inspector is not just any person. This is someone
that has extreme knowledge about houses and energy use. Once he had
thoroughly inspected your home, that will be the time when he can point out
suggestions or proposals to make your home more energy efficient.

Since electricity is one of the highest paying in all the bills that is acquired in
every home, it is normal that owners would rather opt to have inspectors
checking out their homes rather than pay the bills that seem to be escalating
month after month.

Persons that are considered expert in this system can even point out the
furniture that you can and you cannot do without. They would be glad to help
you sort out what you have in your home and suggest new things that might
help you lower your bills.

This is not all. The data that are gathered from homes are then put into a file
that the energy department of the location have. Once all the information
has been compiled, the house will be given a rating based on the specified
standards of what they consider energy efficient and what is not. Now, why
would that be important to the homeowner? Simple. The rating on how
energy efficient and how energy inefficient a house is will reflect on the
mortgage that the owners are paying.

Mortgages are important to be considered by homeowners because those are
also expenses that they need to pay continuously. Owners do not want to be
buried deep into mortgages just because their homes are not considered an
efficient one.

Another problem that could arise is when homeowners decide to sell their
property. It seems that every buyer is now aware or has been taught well
about choosing homes that are energy efficient.

This is one of the queries they ask real estate brokers and agents. They need
to be assured that the property that they are about to buy will be worth it as
far as electricity bills go.

Not so many people are aware of the fact that energy efficiency is a factor
that affects the market value of their home. If only they have known, they
would have probably went out of their way having that needed inspection
and making the most of what inspectors have to say.
So the next time you have that home energy rating given, you might want to
give it some thought and take note of the suggestions that the department
will be giving you.

Online Home Energy Calculating Tools:
Changing the Way We Look at Electric Bills
We used to look at electric bill this way: look at the figure at the bottom, pull
out wallet or check, and send payment to the company. We never really to
time to examine just home much electricity we consumed and how the
electric company arrived at its calculations.

The increasing costs of electricity nowadays, however, have led us to start
questioning what we first thought was a constant of the homeowners life. We
now think about the different factors that affect our energy consumption and
try to determine how to save some money in our bills.

In the past, people went to read books and read newspapers in order to get
information on how exactly electric companies determined their home energy
use. They would look at their electric meters and try to see how the different
numbers could be converted into monetary values.

Nowadays, all those methods and information are at your fingertips. Because
of the tremendous progress that technology has made during the past few
years, people are now able to access this type of information even while
sitting down.

How, you ask? Of you have no clue yet as to which technology allows you to
access information anywhere, you must have lived in a cave for the past 5
years. The technology referred to, of course, is the internet. In the internet,
you can find a world of resources for every type of use.

Nowadays, finding out how much energy you consume is easy. This is
because there are now a lot of online home energy calculating tools made
available for the general public. People make use of these tools in order to
find out just how much energy their homes actually consume.

One advantage of using online home energy calculating tools is the fact that
they are user-friendly. This means that the online home energy calculating
tools available today can be used by anybody who has access to them.

All you need to do when using these online home energy calculating tools is
enter the information regarding your home. This information is simple
enough so that the average homeowner can provide them.

Another plus to using online home energy calculating tools is the speed and
convenience by which you are able to access the information. Think about it:
the internet now allows us to gather information anytime, from anywhere in
the planet. With the recent developments in connectivity, it is possible to
have the whole world right at your fingertips.

Some people may find this concept pretty frightening, but others do find it
reassuring. Because of the connectivity offered by the internet, we have
become a global community, able to help each other out from the other side
of the world.

By using online home energy calculating tools, you not only learn how much
energy you consume, but how to cut back on that consumption. In other
words, online home energy calculating tools show you where problems
originate and how you can put a stop to those problems.

By making use of these tools, you not only reduce your energy consumption
in the immediate sense, but for the long term.

Now, you might be thinking that you should be able to compute your house
energy consumption through other tools just fine, however, you should
consider the fact that the internet changes all that. With online home energy
calculating tools, you not only get computations, but interpretations as well.

After all, what good is a report if you can’t understand a word of it?

By making use of home energy calculating tools available online, you will be
able to contact other people who may be able to interpret results for you.
They would be able to communicate to you certain types of information which
you might not be able to grasp on your own.

However, before you go and get some online home energy calculating tools,
you might want to ask yourself this question: Are they really necessary? Are
online tools just there to confuse us into thinking that we can change our
electricity bills?

To answer that question, you need to think about the true nature of change.
Online home energy calculating tools are just that: tools. Tools need
wielders, without someone to operate them, they would have no purpose.

And so, online home energy calculating tools can help you only if you are
willing to take steps. Some changes these tools will suggest to you might
seem ridiculous or brilliant, depending on your outlook. But ideas are useless
if not put into action.

Some people may use these online home energy calculating tools for a while,
and then go back to their old wasteful ways after a few weeks.
Use Solar Electricity to Save More Money

Using solar energy is a good option for people who want to save money.
Using this kind of energy will definitely ensure that you get to lower your
monthly utility bills.

You get to have more money in your savings. This is also your opportunity to
conserve the limited energy we have in this world. Thus, it pays to make use
of solar electricity in your household.

Installing solar power in your house can be quite expensive. The price of a
solar panel can range from $300 to $600. Each solar panel may be able to
support your energy needs by 200 watts. Thus, calculating your energy
consumption with the number of solar panels needed may end up very

As such, depending completely on the solar panels to supply the electrical
energy needed by the household may not be the most practical move for
every household.

However, it pays to balance the long term benefits that your solar electricity
can bring you. Also, you can still use the solar energy to effectively lower the
electrical bills you receive every month. All you need to do is to make the
right choices.

You can get a home solar panel to at least supplement the energy use in
your household. This will significantly decrease the electricity costs. You
simply have to make an audit of the electrical items in your household and
evaluate the wattage.

This can help you estimate the energy consumption in a day. You can use
this aspect in determining the solar panels that you need. If you will limit
yourself to a certain number of panels, you can use your energy audit to
determine at what time of day or week you'll most likely utilize the solar

Aside from the long term benefits of solar electricity to your savings, this can
also be your way of contributing to the environment. Using solar electricity
helps in decreasing pollution in the environment. This is also a renewable
energy that avoids the immediate depletion of exhaustible resources.
