EMPLOYEE WALKING CHALLENGE
       SPRING, 2007
WINONA COUNTY WALKING CHALLENGE – SPRING, 2007

PROGRAM
Teams of approximately 5 individuals (everyone must be on a team – you do not need to walk
together, but each team member‟s steps will need to be reported to the team captain for reporting
each week.) THIS WALK WILL BE AN INDIVIDUAL EVENT. POINTS WILL BE
REWARDED BASED ON INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENT. You can form a new team, if
you wish, or stay with the team you formed for the other walks. Team captains will need to either fill
out the registration form and send it to Andrea Monk in the Personnel Department via interoffice mail
or email team name, team members and team captain name to Andrea (amonk@co.winona.mn.us).
The walk will commence on May 14, 2007, and conclude on June 24, 2007.
Equipment: Employees will need to use the pedometers that they have already received or
continue using their own. If an employee is participating in this challenge, however did not
participant in the March-April 2007 challenge run by Winona County Community Health
Services please email Amie Queensland at aqueensland@co.winona.mn.us. Amie can provide
any new participant with one free pedometer.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Trip: Employees, walking and keeping track of their steps individually, will attempt to continue
walking “The Great River Road.” As you may recall last fall‟s Walking Challenge started along the
Great River Road.
On average, most employee participants finished around Little Falls, Minnesota. Little Falls is
approximately 414,000 steps (207 miles) away from the beginning point of the Great River Road at
Itasca State Park.
The total distance along the Great River Road is approximately 500 miles from Itasca State Park to
the Minnesota/Iowa border. This walk will begin where we left off this past fall. (See map on the next
page.) New employee participants who did not participant in the fall can still participate. As
participants may recall, last fall, cities of interest along the Great River Road were highlighted
throughout the walk via email. These old email summaries will be sent to all challenge participants
during the first week of this spring „07 challenge as a reminder to previous participants, and as a
highlight for the new participants. Throughout this upcoming Challenge new destinations will be
also highlighted.
Total Trip: The challenge is to complete the Great River Road Walk! Let‟s see how far along the
Great River Road each individual can travel.
For this challenge, each individual should walk at least 8,000 steps per day. 1 mile = approximately
2,000 steps. (Walk during breaks and lunch. Walking outside of work is strongly encouraged. Put
the pedometer on when you get up in the morning and leave it on all day.) A full length conversion
chart is available for use by employees, but we are encouraging employees to complete the challenge
by walking only. (You will need to remove your pedometer when using the conversion chart – no
“double dipping” allowed.)
Individuals will record the number of steps taken each day into a log and on Mondays provide them
to your team captain who will report them to Andrea Monk. (Also remember to add in any steps you
accumulated using the conversion chart.)
On Mondays, individuals will report steps to the team captain and the team captain will record them
in a steps log in Excel. Each team member‟s steps will then be reported to Andrea Monk who will
keep track of how far the employees have traveled.

Winona County Worksite Challenge

Winona County Community Health Services is leading a community-wide effort in coordination with
a Blue Cross Blue Shield Grant. Between 10-15 worksites across Winona are participating in this
