Abstract This paper outlines a research framework for a qualitative investigation into gaining a better understanding of the design process in a corporate environment. Research indicates that the design process is poorly understood and difficult to describe or teach. This project will study design teams, design team members, and the interaction within and between these groups. The goal is to understand the framework within which these teams make their design decisions and ultimately learn more about the design process. This paper will cover the study’s goals, methodology, and expectations from an academic and corporate perspective. It is the basis for a PhD thesis entitled “Understanding the Design Process” in Biosystems Engineering under the direction of the NSERC Design Chair at the University of Manitoba.
