We received a tremendous amount of feedback regarding the “new” POP (Program Opportunities and Partnerships) Guide. Much of the feedback was positive. Leaders really liked the option of going to community partners directly and on their schedule to plan activities and projects but others felt that we did not provide enough council-sponsored events; therefore, we have created several events and new partnerships to expand our offerings for Spring 2009. We are excited to offer World Thinking Day, the MLK Day Celebration and the Outdoor Skills Olympics for girls of all ages. You will find new programs for Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors that will help girls explore their lives and their communities. Jammin’ in Jammies, Fun Fridays and Back Again Blasts round out the fun! We are looking forward to 2009 as we Discover, Connect and Take Action with girls and volunteers of Sahuaro Girl Scout Council! Please let me know your thoughts about the Spring 2009 POP Guide! You can contact me at 520-319-3168 or at drich@sahuarogsc.org. Yours in Girl Scouting,
There is a new science activity for Girl Scout troops! It is a Challenge with rewards and with the prospect of serving other students worldwide. NASA has developed a paper model for the James Webb Space Telescope. Unfortunately, the model incorporates a flat (!) mirror instead of a curved one so students may never understand how real telescopes work. The Challenge is for troops to build the model and substitute their own design for a curved mirror. Their solutions can earn rewards and will also be posted on the James Webb Space Telescope NIRcam Web site to help many other students around the world. You can choose Beginning and Advanced levels of this Challenge. Both are meant to be fun and also to reinforce STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) topics that students encounter in school. Even if you feel hesitant to lead parts of these activities, especially the Advanced version, you are encouraged to try anyway even if only a few girls are interested. Those girls may be like NASA’s Project Scientist, Project Manager, or lead Engineer who were all Girl Scouts early in life and later pursued technical interests. To assist you in a fun way, there is an option to “Ask an Astronomer or Engineer” to answer questions of any kind. This Challenge will be interesting and educational for your troops. Please consider working on this activity for the first few months of 2009. It aligns especially well with the Junior “Sky Search” badge and with the Cadette “Space Exploration” IP. The Challenge is posted on the Web site for NIRCam education (http:// zeus.as.arizona.edu/~dmccarthy/GSUSA/index.htm). On the left side, scroll down and select “E/PO Activities” and then select “The Mirror Shaping Challenge.” That file is large (8 megs) and may take a while to download. Another, shorter activity is posted that will prepare your troop to understand how telescopes collect light: “My, What Big Eyes You Have.” Questions? Contact Michelle Higgins at mhiggins@sahuarogsc.org or 520-319-3155.

(Time and place TBA) SGSC along with several Community Partners will recognize the efforts of our outstanding volunteers and the hard work of our Silver and Gold Award recipients. In Girl Scouting, “recognition” is how we show our volunteers that we appreciate their service. We think that appropriate recognition should be more than simply saying “thank you” at the end of the membership year, or when a particular service or task is accomplished. Appropriate recognition should acknowledge the work and contributions of volunteers in a formal or an informal way. Honoring adults publicly highlights Girl Scouting’s vitality in the community. We will recognize volunteers’ contributions, regardless of the pathway taken to join Girl Scouting (short- or longterm, direct- or indirect-service). Acts of recognitions are done in the spirit and within the guidelines of Girl Scouting, with the ultimate goal being to help all girls grow strong and reach their full potential. NOMINATIONS NEED TO BE RECEIVED AT COUNCIL BY MARCH 1, 2009. Please let us know if volunteers need their 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 year pins, etc. See our Web site for full instructions. Guidelines and Nomination forms for GSUSA recognitions are on the Council Web site under forms then recognitions.
