COUNSELING SERVICES / CENTER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
Welcome to Counseling Services at Elizabethtown College. In order to serve you best, we would like to
provide you with information about Counseling Services. We invite you to ask the counselor if you have
any questions about the information below.
Elizabethtown College offers a range of professional services for students wanting help with personal
and mental health concerns, interpersonal issues, and crisis intervention. In your initial sessions with a
counselor, you will discuss and evaluate your concerns together and address the goals for treatment.
Individual, couples, and group therapy, as well as psychiatric consultations, are available to meet the
needs of students. These services are free of charge and available to all full‐time students. In some
cases, we may determine that a referral to another department on campus or resources off‐campus may
be more appropriate to your needs. In such cases, we will provide appropriate referrals and assist you in
the referral process as much as possible.
Confidentiality and Limits to Confidentiality
All communications between you and your counselor will remain confidential and will not, except under
the circumstances described below, be disclosed to anyone outside of Counseling Services without your
written authorization to release this information. No record of counseling is contained in any academic,
educational, or job placement file. In some situations involving danger and/or risk of imminent harm to
yourself or others, child abuse, or dependent adult abuse, your counselor is required by law to disclose
certain information in order to protect you and/or others. In certain legal situations, including court
order, your counselor is required to disclose information as necessary to comply with the law. If at all
possible, your counselor will discuss the procedures with you and enlist your assistance in resolution of
the situation that has necessitated such disclosure. In most circumstances, if you are a minor (under 18),
your parents or legal guardian must give consent for treatment and may access your records.
It is important to know that the staff in Counseling Services work as a team and may engage in
professional consultation with each other about your case without prior notification. Professional
consultation is a common practice that helps us to provide the best services possible. Counselors will
also be able to access records from your previous visits.
Research and Evaluation
Elizabethtown College Counseling Services seeks to evaluate and improve its services to students by
conducting research and evaluation projects each year. You may be asked to participate in current
research projects. Staff members conducting research and evaluation projects may also take selected
information from you file as a part of a project. This activity would always be on an anonymous and
confidential basis and restricted to information relevant to the project only.

Counseling Services has limited availability of consulting psychiatric services. Arrangements to meet with
a consulting psychiatrist can only be initiated by a staff counselor. Typically a decision to have a student
meet with a psychiatrist occurs when it is determined that the student might benefit from an
assessment for medication. Please note that it’s very important that students be on time for their
appointments with consulting psychiatrists and they notify Counseling Services as soon as possible if
they will not be able to attend. Advance notice of canceled appointments allows Counseling Services to
reschedule that time for other students seeking appointments. No shows or late arrivals for psychiatric
appointments will result in a fee.
