Maintaining Proper Boundaries Outline
The objectives of the boundaries course are for the physician attendee to: • • • • • • Understand sexual boundary issues, including current laws and rules Identify risk factors in the education and training of physicians who have violated sexual boundaries Identify family of origin issues and core personality issues that may contribute to sexual boundary violations Review office organization and policies that promote appropriate practice boundaries Understand about addictive disorders in general and sexual addiction in particular as a risk factor for this kind of misbehavior Identify appropriate treatment resources in the United States.

Day One 8:00 8:30 9:15 11:00 12:00 1:00 2:30 3:00 3:40 4:20 4:30 Day Two 8:00 8:30 9:30 10:30 12:00 1:00 3:00 3:30 Registration / Continental Breakfast Introduction / Welcome –Anderson Spickard, Jr.,MD Session 1– Group exercise, Tension in the Physician’s World – William Swiggart– Group discussions about confidentiality, and group process. Participants will discuss why they were referred and establish goals for the course. Session 2 –Development of the Physician-William Swiggart, MS, LPC/MHSP- lecture and discussion about the process involved in physician training Lunch OnSite Session 3– Sexual Boundary Violations in Medical Practice – Ginger Manley –A lecture on boundaries, boundary violations, physician sexual misconduct and solutions. Break Session 4– Shame & Guilt – William Swiggart –A lecture that will focus on the powerful affect of shame and how it influences behavior. Session 4a– Genogram– Lecture and demonstration on systems theory and its application to the family, participants will construct a personal genogram. Session 4b- Self Assessment Tools –A package of self assessment instruments will be given to help the physician look at him or herself in the areas of sexual behavior, family function, trauma, and boundary violation. Complete Evaluation – Adjourn *2-hours evening homework required...Genogram / Self Assessment Tools Continental Breakfast Session 5– Office Practice and Procedure to Prevent Sexual Exploitation – Anderson Spickard, Jr., MD –Lecture on common issues in the office or clinic. Session 6– The Healing Process – Ginger Manley –A lecture on the effects of boundary violations Session 7 –Forgiveness Exercise – Ginger Manley Lunch – onsite Session 8– Group exercise –The participants will divide into two groups and discuss their genogram results with the course faculty. Session 9– Assessment results and homework assignment/Consent Form/Optional letter confirming attendance/Intent to Change - William Swiggart Complete Evaluation – Adjourn *2-hours evening homework required

Day Three 8:00 8:30 9:30 Continental Breakfast Session 10– Seeds and Roots of Addiction – Anderson Spickard, Jr., MD –Lecture on addiction and recovery Session 11– Group exercise – William Swiggart -Group exercise with same format as in Session 8. Participants will discuss the assessment data in the small group. Intent to Change – William Swiggart –Experiential exercise in which the participants are asked to identify three behaviors they wish to change as a result of the course. Lunch – onsite Session 12– 12 Step Recovery – William Swiggart -Lecture on 12 Step recovery groups and specific resources for physicians interested in recovery. Session 13–Turn in course evaluation, consent form, etc. Adjourn
