Persuasive Outlines In-Class Assignment
February 13, 2008
Each student got two outline sheets to use with persuasive writing. We used one together in class. We used “the school year should be shorter” as the class example. We brainstormed ideas and the students filled in the outline. If a student was absent, he or she may come in and get help or get help from a friend. The second outline is for independent work (though I encourage students to help one another with this). On the second outline the students were given two prompts. One prompt asks students to write an outline they would use to convince others that someone they like (a boyfriend, girlfriend, parent or just friend) is the best (boyfriend, girlfriend, parent, or just friend). This prompt has an audience of anyone. The other prompt asked students to write an outline they would use to convince a specific person (a desired boyfriend, girlfriend, or just friend) to like or love them. Remember this is a persuasive paper. That means you will need to have an opinion topic sentence, anticipate the opposition, and include a call to action with the conclusion.
