Outlines and Essays
English Literature and Composition Outlines/webs will be due on the following dates: 5/6, 5/11, 5/17, 5/20 One polished papers based on one of the outlines/webs is due this term in addition to other projects and literature assignments. The polished paper is due by 5/27. Topic Guidelines: 1. Literary analysis on any class reading (we will do a sample together on 4/26) – if you need further guidelines for completing a literary analysis, use the writing workshop on pages 67-68 in your textbook and/or pgs 263-283 in Write for College (handbook available in Ms. BP’s room). Polished Paper Guidelines: 2-4 pages typed 12 point font Double-spaced MLA parenthetical citations for literature or research sources used in the paper A clear thesis that focuses your essay in the introduction Support for the thesis in body paragraphs with specific examples (text, life, other texts, etc) Sophisticated word choice, mechanics, sentence structure, and so on A conclusion that draws your points together Outline/Web Guidelines: Outlines or webs are acceptable. Your goal with each is to show the thinking and organization you would use in the paper if it were written to its full extent. We will complete a sample outline together. Title the web/outline o Does Antigone make the right choice? Subtitle the web/outline o Literary Analysis Write out your thesis (If you are creating a web, write your thesis in the center circle. If you are creating an outline, write your thesis at the top of your paper before you begin using roman numerals.) o THESIS: Antigone must decide between her religious/family values and following the civil law; by determining she must value religion and family over the law she remains true to her passions in life but must also pay the consequences. Begin the outline or web with your first main point o I. Antigone knew the law but went against it showing her value of religion and faith Follow the first main point with examples o (a.) lines 15-25 – Antigone informs her sister of Creon’s law and the consequences
o (b.) line 27 – Antigone shows how passionate she is when she claims that Ismene will be a traitor if she doesn’t follow Antigone in burying Polyneices o (c.) line 78 Antigone states”I shall be hating you soon” to show Ismene the power of her choice and of Antigone’s choice). Continue of this pattern of roman numerals identifying main points and letters identifying the support until you have made all main points (at least three) o II. Antigone buries her brother without fear o III. Antigone goes to death with only brief mourning At the end of your ouline or web, write a works cited entry for any works used: Sophocles. Antigone. Workshop and Grading Guidelines Outlines/webs will be graded for completion credit and I will give some comments on the direction of the paper I visualize developing out off your outline/web. You can schedule conferences with me to go over any drafts of your essay. We will periodically have workshop days in class for approximately 30 minutes at a time in which you can choose to work on one of the following: Reading Topic choice Free writing Webbing/outlining Drafting Peer conferencing Teacher question PQS conference about a specific area (praise, question, suggest)
