You’ve taken the test drive, haggled over the price, and now it’s time to collect your
car. Don’t let the excitement get the better of you, though - you need to do some
important checks first. Don’t rush, as these can take up to an hour.

❏ Always	collect	the	car	in	daylight	hours.	If	it’s	dark	or	wet, notes .........................................................

❏ Ask	if	the	vehicle	has	been	repaired	at	any	time	-	if	aware ......................................................................

❏ Check	the	interior	of	the	car.	Make	sure	the	fabrics	and

❏ Is	there	an	owners’	manual	for	the	vehicle	in	the	car?
Request	it	if	not. ......................................................................

❏ Carefully	examine	the	V5C	registration	document	and
check	the	registration	date,	number	of	previous	owners
                                                                                      ......................................................................

❏ When	you	complete	the	sale,	ensure	that	the	new
owner’s	section	of	the	V5C	is	filled	out	correctly,	and	that	you ......................................................................
take	the	relevant	sections	with	you.

❏ If	buying	from	a	dealer,	make	sure	you	get	an	invoice	and
sales	contract	showing	that	you	have	completed	the	deal	and ......................................................................
that	the	balance	has	been	paid.	If	buying	privately,	ask	for	a
signed	letter	that	says	you	paid	the	amount	in	full. ......................................................................

                                                                                      ......................................................................
                                                                                      notes .........................................................
❏ If	you’re	buying	privately,	have	a	full	vehicle	history	check
carried	out	on	the	car	to	ensure	it	is	not	stolen	or	subject	to ......................................................................
outstanding	finance.
                                                                  ......................................................................
❏ If	you’re	opting	for	a	finance	package	from	a	dealer,	check
the	paperwork	thoroughly	before	you	sign. ......................................................................

❏ Ensure	the	seller	takes	the	time	to	explain	how	to	operate ......................................................................
the	car	and	accessories,	and	as	a	minimum	shows	you	the
operation	of	key	functions	such	as	the	car	alarm,	hazard ......................................................................
warning	switch,	the	spare	wheel	and	jack	location,	the	mirror
adjusters	and	the	fuel	and	boot	releases. ......................................................................

❏ Take	the	seller’s	name,	address	and	contact	number. ......................................................................

                                                                                      ......................................................................
❏ Make	sure	you	have	switched	your	insurance	so	you	are
covered	for	the	new	vehicle.
                                                                                      ......................................................................

                                                                                      ......................................................................
if there is a problem...
                                                                                      ......................................................................
❏ If	you	are	concerned	that	the	car	is	not	as	advertised,	you
should	let	the	seller	know	before	you	take	ownership.	If ......................................................................
buying	privately,	it	might	be	more	difficult	to	negotiate	an
agreement.	If	you	are	not	happy,	don’t	take	delivery	of	the	car. ......................................................................

❏ Although	private	sales	aren’t	covered	by	the	Sale	of	Goods ......................................................................
Act,	you	could	still	try	and	pursue	the	seller	through	the	courts
if	they	have	misled	you	by	falsely	describing	the	car.	Generally, ......................................................................
though,	you	have	few	rights	-	it’s	a	case	of	‘buyer	beware’.
                                                                   ......................................................................
❏ If	you	find	a	problem	before	you	have	taken	delivery	of ......................................................................
the	car,	tell	the	seller	immediately	and	request	the	problems
are	rectified.	If	they	are	substantial	and	you	are	buying	from	a
garage,	do	not	sign	any	paperwork	or	take	the	car. ......................................................................

                                                                                      ......................................................................
❏ If	the	salesman	suggests	you	take	the	car,	only	do	so	if	it
is	clearly	stated	on	the	sales	invoice	what	the	problems	are, ......................................................................
when	they	will	be	fixed	and	what	costs	will	be	involved.	Get	a
manager	to	sign	the	paper. ......................................................................
❏ Keep	all	records	and	paperwork,	in	case	you	need	to	refer ......................................................................
to	them	later	on.
                                                                  ......................................................................
❏ If	buying	from	a	garage,	and	if	you	intend	to	reject	the
car,	you	must	so	formally	in	writing	as	soon	as	possible.	If	you ......................................................................
do	this	within	two	weeks,	you	stand	a	far	higher	chance	of
success	and	a	full	refund	–	especially	if	the	case	goes	to	court. ......................................................................

❏	If	you	are	purchasing	from	a	garage,	they	may	try	to .....................................................................
negotiate	a	settlement	with	you.	This	may	take	the	form	of	an
additional	discount	or	extra	incentives.	Look	at	these	carefully ......................................................................
and	decide	if	they	are	fair	compensation.
