Campbell ISD Newsletter September 2008 Volume 1, Issue 1 Superintendent: Mr. Strike Franklin High School Principal: Mr. Earnie Phelps Elementary Principal: Dr. Gerald Rosebure Principal’s Welcome Back to School Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Community Members, I want to take this time to welcome everyone back to Campbell ISD for the 2008-2009 school year. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and restful summer. One hundred forty-three secondary students came back to school on Monday, August 25th. Students were welcomed back with open arms by the faculty and staff. I met with each class that morning and discussed district policies and handbook policies. The kids were really upbeat and anxious to start school. I wish the students, parents, guardians, faculty, staff and community members good luck and great success for this upcoming school year. With Regards, Earnie Phelps JH/HS Principal Dear Community Members, It is a pleasure and an honor for me to be able to work with the wonderful children and faculty that shape the identity of Campbell Elementary Schools. In the second week of school there are one hundred ninety-one students enrolled in the elementary school. This year the aim and goal of the elementary school is to reach exemplary status on our TAKS scores. Our teachers and students are working very hard to ensure this success. Let me encourage you to watch very closely your child’s progress throughout the year. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you through the agenda, by phone, and e-mail. Recently the 2007-2008 school year Accountability Ratings were released by the Texas Education Agency. Campbell ISD received a recognized rating by the TEA. The TEA rates schools and districts across the states into four categories, academically unacceptable, academically acceptable, recognized, and exemplary. Out of the eleven school districts in Hunt County, Campbell along with five other districts received the Recognized Rating. No school in Hunt County had a higher rating than Campbell Independent School District. This marks the second year in the last three years that Campbell ISD has received a recognized rating. The Junior High/High School campus also received a recognized rating by the TEA. This marks the third time since the implementation of the TAKS Test that the high school has received a recognized rating. With the joy and happiness of our students’ success, the administration, faculty, and staff are not satisfied. Campbell’s goal and objective is for our schools to reach the exemplary level of academic success. Campbell ISD Newsletter Dual Credit Classes Offered at Campbell High School New this year to Campbell ISD is a course that gives seniors and juniors the opportunity to earn college credit while completing their last years of high school English! Taught through Paris Junior College by Campbell High School faculty member, Beth Mizell, the dual credit course provides students with the valuable opportunity to complete their first year of college English for half the amount of time and money. This is a great chance to get students enrolled and comfortable with the idea of being successful in higher education. We look forward to their success! Student Council Activities The Campbell Junior High/High School Student Council is in the process of starting some great efforts to work within and for the community. The Student Council had a lock-in at the new gym prior to the starting of school to plan activities that will help aid in the growth of student involvement within the community. Currently the student council is running a military drive from September 8-19. The student council are collecting goods that will be shipped to members of our armed forces. On September 11 there will be a 9-11 presentation and a student lead prayer at the flagpole. On the September 15 the student council will have a bake sale to raise money for the activities they have planned for this school year. Student council members will attend the pre-kindergarten class on September 19. On September 20 the student council will have a car wash. Carter Blood Center will also be at the school on September 23 for a blood drive that is sponsored by the student council. The student council will finish up the month of September with an assembly for third through eighth graders on the twenty-sixth. Campbell High School/Junior High Choir The junior high/high school choir is open to any student in 7th-12th grades. Practices are held every Wednesday after school starting at 3:30 and going until about 6:00. The choir is sponsored by Mr. Strike Franklin and the Superintendent’s Council and conducted by Mr. Alex Frair. There are no formal tryouts, however, each student is evaluated though-out practices and may be asked to work on a skill to stay in choir. This year, we will be working towards a Christmas Concert, so if you are a student or a parent who wants their child involved, please stop by and talk to Mr. Alex Frair at your earliest convenience or e-mail him at afrair@ednet10.net. You may also call him at (903) 268-4764. Otherwise, show up on Wednesdays at 3:30 for practice. 2007-2008 YEARBOOKS Yearbooks from the 2007-2008 are still available. We’re on the Web! http://campbell.ednet10.net Message From The Superintendent I am in my ninth year at Campbell ISD, and I feel very fortunate to work at a school committed to excellence. Campbell ISD was rated by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as a Recognized school district for this past year’s performance. The rating represents a lot things such as: 1) Our students achieved high scores on the TAKS tests. (2) Our curriculum is in order. (3) Our students are focused. (4) Our teachers are focused. (5) Our administration is focused. (6) Our Board of Education is focused. (7) We are teaching material that is on the TAKS tests. (8) We are providing tutoring that is on target. (9) Campbell ISD is a school district that is providing an environment that is conducive to learning. (10) We have hard working students, teachers, and administrators. All of the above represents the fact that Campbell ISD is working together for the common belief that all students can learn. I would like this community to know that the Campbell ISD Board of Education is one of the finest groups of leaders serving a school district in the state of Texas. Our Board always puts the students first, and they expect our Administration & Teachers to do the same. Although we are the top school district in Hunt County, we have maintained this status while keeping our Tax Rate the lowest in the County, and we have accomplished this for the last several years. Over 500 school districts in Texas the last two years have had to conduct a property tax roll back election. With the new laws that came out of the Senate two years ago, every school district will eventually hold a tax roll back election. All but a few schools in Hunt County has either had one or they are conducting one this year. Campbell ISD will also have to conduct one in the near future. If anyone would like to discuss this with me, please feel free to contact me at 903-862-3259 Ext. 11. Please visit our web site at (campbell.ednet10.net); we now have our Policy Manuel on line. I ask all of our parents to work with our Principals on discipline matters, it is important we maintain a structured environment. GO INDIANS! With Regards, Strike Franklin, Superintendent
