Inside this issue: IM New Arrivals Guest Author Government Documents Bright Bytes Read Cover to Cover 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 In our fast paced world, it is important that we get information distributed and questions answered quickly. The library is doing our part to foster quick communication with our service called IM (instant messaging). IM is an electronic means of communication that is closer to having a conversation than email. The means by which the two parties communicate, in our case the librarian and the person with a request or question, is in a chat format. The way it works for you: Visit the Academic Library’s website at http:// www.azwestern.edu. On the right side of the page, see the section that says, “Have a question? Chat with a Reference Librarian” and click on the word “chat”. A chat window will appear. A message stating whether the librarian is “online” or “offline” will appear at the top of the window. If the librarian is online, type your question in the chat window. A librarian at the Reference Desk will answer your request as soon as possible. It’s that easy! If the librarian is offline for some reason, you still have the option of using the “Ask a Librarian” email service available from the library’s homepage or call us at 928-3447777. For instant messaging FAQ’s, visit our homepage and click “Reference IM FAQ” on the right side of the screen. New Arrivals New Arrivals at the Library! As you are rushing past the library on the outside walkways, slow down and take a look at our New Arrivals posters. Facing outward to draw you inside, a preview of new books, music, dvd’s, and government documents. Stop, look, check-out. Page 2 Academic Library Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 3 Guest Author Everyone is invited on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 2:30pm to an event hosted by LIAN (the Library Interest and Advocacy Network). We will have a guest speaker, AWC/NAU’s own Dr. Samadhi Metta Bexar to headline the program. Sam will be discussing her work and research on Chicana literature. Her work has been published in Post-Revolutionary Chicana Literature: Memoir, Folklore, and Fiction of the Border, 1900-1950; Routledge, 2007. The Academic Library has a copy of this book in the collection. The border discussed in her work is the border area of Laredo, Texas. Please join us for an interesting discussion of what the concept of Chicana literature and its impact in this learning environment may mean for us. We will also discuss other items relating to the Academic Library. LIAN is an informative network to provide an opportunity to communicate new happenings at the library. It also is an avenue to become an advocate for the Library and its services through the academic communities of Arizona Western College and Northern Arizona University-Yuma. The AWC/NAU-Yuma Academic Library's LIAN (Library Interest and Advocacy Network) is highlighting a number of administrators, faculty and students in READ posters to promote literacy. The posters will be displayed in the library and classrooms on the AWC/NAU-Yuma campus. Among our campus celebrities are: Dr. Krista Rodin, Associate Vice President and Campus Executive Officer of NAU-Yuma Branch Campus, Penny Cooper, AWC Professor of English, and Maria Aguirre, AWC Curriculum/ Diversity Coordinator, each selected one of their favorite books to promote reading. Professor Penny Cooper said, “I chose to hold a book by Faulkner because he uses language so beautifully, and in such an understated manner.” Dr. Krista Rodin, who chose the book titled Faust said, “Faust is an amazing story of a man who is constantly striving to fully understand and experience life. His quest is ultimately that of all of us; Goethe, however, allows us to understand this journey in ways that speak to us differently at different stages of our lives. Like all great art, it forces us to reevaluate our perceptions of reality and the world around us, thereby expanding our ability to understand and empathize with others.” The LIAN committee would like to thank John Ringland, AWC Television Production Engineer, Molly Patrick, Photographer and Ernest Fierros, Print Shop Supervisor, who have generously taken time to create the posters using the software published by the American Library Association (ALA). This literacy project allows us to create posters with our learning community, promoting the simple but powerful message from the American Library Association – “READ”. Cover to Cover The Cover to Cover book club will be featuring Chocolat: a 1999 novel by Joanne Harris, at their next meeting in April. It tells the story of a young mother who arrives at a French village with her daughter. She opens a small chocolatierie and her confections quickly begin to change the lives of the townspeople through magic. Watch for more information on the AWC Event Calendar at www.azwestern.edu “Rich with metaphor and gorgeous writing... sit back and gorge yourself on Chocolat” This Newsletter was created by the Library Staff Academic Library 2020 S.
