Title: Trends in the Periodic Table

Subject Area: Chemistry

Grade Level: 10th

Concept(s) Addressed:
      Atomic Radius
      Ionization Energy
      Electron Affinity
      Ionic Charge and Ionic Radius

Knowledge Goal(s): Students will understand the trends in atomic radius, ionization
energy, and electron affinity as you travel across a row/period, down a column/family, or
through the Periodic Table.

Performance Objective(s): Students will be able to
      - show pictorially and through explanation the trends in the Periodic Table for
atomic radius, ionization energy, and electron affinity
      - explain how filled electron levels and sublevels affect the trends
      - use Microsoft Excel to plot trends

Curriculum Standard(s) Addressed:

Instructional Procedures:
This material was used during two class periods. Parts 1 and 2 were completed during
the first day and Part 3 completed during second day. Students can work separately or in
groups.

The materials are presented as a worksheet with questions and instructions to guide
students through a plotting activity created in Microsoft Excel. Macros are already
created in the Excel file provided to students. The worksheet provides instructions on
how to use the Excel file and has leading questions to get students thinking about the
effect electron configuration has on trends in the Periodic Table. Periodic Tables were
provided to each student if/when needed.

Assessment Rubric:
No formal assessment rubric was created. Comments were made on students’ handouts
for questions answered wrong.

Teacher Notes:
This Excel activity gives students a chance to create plots. The charts are already created
in Excel, so all the students have to do is fill in the data tables. This is good for students
who have never used Excel to plot before.
Prerequisites for this lesson include electron configuration, definition of energy levels
and sublevels, electron/valence shell.
