ASEE Academy of Fellows Newsletter Message from the Chair To the Fellows of ASEE: Hawaii last summer—and now the January thaw has come to Minnesota, and it is gone. In Minnesota, we need, and are getting, some new white stuff to cover the sand-covered mounds of plowed snow along the streets. We have taken advantage of the opportunity to have some interesting discussions in our community about issues such as global warming, energy consumption, conservation, renewable energy, sustainability, and recycling. In this we almost certainly we are not very different from other communities. We are asking questions, and all of us hope that the decision makers are asking good questions— without good questions, no good answers. No doubt all of us heard variations of the following question in our classes. Why do I need to know about (pick your favorite general education topic)? I will never need this in my work! The ones I remember most vividly were political in nature. One thinks of location of power lines, roads, cell phone towers, pipelines, radio transmitters, dams, and many others. We also think of new technologies and their effects January 2008 on people around the world. Often, these lead to political decisions with a strong technical aspect. Are we providing students with the knowledge and abilities they will need to define effective technological systems to meet human needs? Will they be able to provide their knowledge to decision makers in a way that lets them make good decisions? Are we making the idea of public service attractive to technically accomplished people so that they will participate in both the technical and political decision-making? Another way to say it—are our students learning to ask good questions. We have all heard the maxim that there are no “bad questions” in the classroom. I agree, but in most of life, there are good questions and not-so-good questions. The outstanding researchers ask good questions. The outstanding students and teachers ask good questions. The outstanding engineers ask good questions. The outstanding political leaders ask good questions. I hope we can all think of good questions to ask—of our students, our leaders, indeed everyone. We all will be better off for it. (continued on next page) Message from the Chair (contd) On a different tact, I want to take this opportunity to remind you again to consider nominating a candidate to be selected as an ASEE Fellow. Try it—it is most rewarding. Consider your colleagues—many of them are most deserving. Two important web sites are: www.asee.org the ASEE general site, and http://www.asee.org/activities/ awards/fellowNomination.cfm, the Fellows nomination page. By the way, the Academy is not involved in the selection of Fellows from among the nominees. The ASEE Board of Directors does that, acting on recommendations from the Awards Board of ASEE. The 2008 deadline is February 1, 2008—a date that is not flexible. Finally, please send news about yourself your institution, your travels, and your services, including photos - to Frank for the spring newsletter. We hope to see you in Pittsburgh next summer. And, please keep us (and ASEE Headquarters) informed as to address and job changes. I look forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh. Ed Jones, Academy Chair ASEE Lifetime Achievement Award For the past year, a committee of ASEE Life Members has been raising funds to endow a new award for lifetime achievement. While the details of the award have not yet been determined, in general it is intended to recognize individuals who have retired or who are near the end of their career for sustained contributions to education in the fields of engineering and/or engineering technology. These contributions may be in teaching, education research, and administration of educational programs, professional service, or any combination thereof. The recipient will receive a $1,000 honorarium, travel assistance up to $1,000 for travel to the Annual Conference to receive the award, and a commemorative plaque. To date, ASEE Life Members have contributed nearly $19,000 to the fund. While this is a project of the Life Members, anyone can contribute. An email to Sandra Wingate-Bey at ASEE Headquarters (s.wingatebey@asee.org) will bring you a form to use in making a donation. The committee consists of Frank Barnes, Lyle Feisel, Ed Jones, Bob Page, Angie Perna, Jim Stice and John Weese. If you have any questions about the project, email Lyle (L.Feisel@ieee.org) or any of the other committee members. Mark Your Calendars Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration (CIEC). Ed Jones, Chair, called the Academy of Fellows to order at 7:20 am on Wednesday, June 27, 2007. *As the first order of business, Angie Perna ‘lei-ed’ all the new members. “Not-so-new” Fellows who had not previously attended a Fellows Breakfast were recognized and ’lei-ed’, also. *Dave Wormley, President of ASEE, commented on the Society’s activities to continue promoting quality education. *Frank Huband was acknowledged for his role in providing the wholesome and nourishing breakfast for the group. He noted that a record number of papers were being presented at the conference and that there were nearly a record number of attendees. *Angie Perna delivered one of his famous Motivation & Inspiration speeches (No. 14). He also encouraged mentors to nominate new members to the Academy of Fellows. *There was a moment of silence held for those Fellows who had passed on during the past year. *Officers in attendance, Ed Jones (Chair) and Frank Gourley (Acting Secretary and Newsletter Editor), were acknowledged. *Jim Melsa, incoming President of ASEE, was recognized. He promised a short speech at the Annual Banquet tonight, to applause. *Others recognized were: Bill LeBold, for 50 years of service in ASEE. Jerry Jakubowski, as a Fellow who is president of a university. Frank Huband, for the breakfast (again). Tim Manicum, as ASEE staff representative. *Ed Jones indicated that the ‘reports’ from members in the Newsletter were well received and suggested that this feature be continued. Any Fellows receiving a hard copy of the Newsletter who have an email address were encouraged to let Frank know their email address. (fgourley@wvutech.edu) *Angie’s challenge for next year in Pittsburgh is to come up with an equivalent to the lei to bestow on new Fellows and deserving members. *Angie recognized fellows receiving ASEE awards at this year’s Conference. *The new Fellows were subjected to a photo lineup, which they endured with smiles. Also, the award recipients were similarly ‘captured’. See photos elsewhere. *Adjournment was announced with the admonition not to proceed directly to the Brunch Bar and continue eating. Most of the Fellows heeded the admonition and continued kibitzing for a good while. Mahalo. Respectfully submitted Frank A. Gourley, Jr., Acting Secretary. Hawaiian Cruise Report Fifty-plus ASEEers took a seven-day cruise around the Hawaiian Islands after the Annual Conference. Ten Fellows and their wives were on the cruise. The ‘cruisers’ had a casting-off party as the ship left Honolulu on Saturday, June 30. Sunday’s port was Hilo, on the ‘Big (Hawaii) Island’; Monday and Tuesday we were docked in Kahuli, Maui; Wednesday we were to put in at KailuaKona, on the ‘Big Island’, but the sea was too rough, so we sailed by the cliffs of Moloka’i and returned to Honolulu in time to have a Fourth of July party on deck and observe the fireworks over the city; from there we cruised to Kaua’i Island and put in at Lihue (Nawiliwili Bay) for two days. The ship then cruised by the Na Pali Coast of Kaua’i before returning to Honolulu on Saturday morning. During the week new friendships were formed, new sights were seen, new experiences were enjoyed, new words were learned, and a new appreciation was gained for the ‘land’ called Hawai’i. The Fellows cruising were: Walt Buchanan, Marvin Criswell, Eli Fromm, Frank Gourley, B.K. Hodge, Jerry Jakubowski, Bob Mott, John Prados, Jerry Thuesen, and Dan Turner.
