Manheim Central School District Attendance Policy

Public performances are the primary forum wherein music students are evaluated.
Such performances are, in effect, the ‘tests’ and ‘final exams’ for these courses. For this
reason, as well as to ensure the overall success of the group, attendance at performances
is mandatory. In marking periods in which a performance in given, 70% of the marking
period grade will be determined by work in the classroom and rehearsals. 30% of the
marking period grade will be determined by concert participation. In a marking period in
which no performance is given, 100% of the marking period grade will be determined by
work in the classroom and rehearsals.
For required orchestra performances, only absences for the following will be
considered: 1) Personal illness (documented by a physician’s statement): 2) Death in the
family: 3) Educational travel approved by the district provided the student notifies the
director at least 2 weeks prior to the date of departure (see guidelines in Student Behavior
Code): 4) Release time for religious instruction (Required form is to be submitted to the
director at least two weeks prior to the absence). Students with excused absences will be
expected to earn points to substitute for concert participation. Criteria for the awarding
of such credit will be determined by the orchestra director. Students who are absent for
reasons not specifically excused above will receive a zero for the concert portion of their
grade.

I have read the 2009 – 2010 Middle School Orchestra Calendar and attendance policy. I
have noted the required performances and appropriate dates.
