									Meridian Elementary Attendance Policy

SAFE ARRIVAL: To insure your child’s safety and well being, Meridian uses a “safe arrival”
system. Please call us at 253-373-7664 by 9:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent or late.
If we have not received a call from you and your child is marked absent, the office staff will call
home and/or work to verify the student is absent. You can also report absences by emailing or by calling 253-373-3178. The attendance and message line is
a 24 hour line, feel free to leave an absence message at any hour. If a student is late coming to
school, the student needs to check in at the office and pick up a late slip before continuing to

Excused Absences: Excused absences from school are allowed for the following reasons:
                  1. Personal Illness
                  2. Family Emergencies
                  3. Health Care Appointments
                  4. Religious Observances

Unexcused Absences: Absences will be considered unexcused for the following reasons:
                  1. Vacations
                  2. Transportation Problems
                  3. Car Trouble
                  4. Sleeping Late
                  5. Walking Slow
                  6. Parents are late

Students who are absent from school during the day are not allowed to participate in school-
related activities after school hours!

Late Arrivals: It is important that children come to school on time. When they arrive late, they
not only interrupt the class, they miss lunch ordering, directions, and important classroom
instruction. We know it’s not always possible, but we encourage you to try to make
appointments for your student outside of school hours. Excessive tardiness or leaving early
(both are coded as tardies on attendance reports) can cause hardship on the student,
inconvenience for both teacher and classmates.

Excused Late Arrivals: 1. Personal Illness
                            2. Family Emergency
                            3. Health Care Appointments
                            4. Religious Observances

Unexcused Late Arrivals: 1. Sleeping Late (by student or parent)
                         2. Transportation Problems (including car trouble)
                         3. Walking Slow

It is our hope that students, with the help of their parents, can make punctuality and good
attendance a lifetime habit
