NEW FOR JANUARY 2009 NON-RESIDENT FEES
The Lincoln Public Library Board has approved an annual non-resident fee for $35.00 for St. Catharines and Grimsby Residents beginning January 1, 2009. This decision was made after the St. Catharines and Grimsby Library Boards turned down the Lincoln Public Library Board’s request for reciprocal borrowing for Lincoln residents at their libraries. Residents of Grimsby and St. Catharines are encouraged to contact their libraries to reconsider reciprocal borrowing with Lincoln. However residents of Grimsby and St. Catharines can participate in all Lincoln Public Library programs. Residents of West Lincoln will continue to receive free library privileges under a reciprocal borrowing agreement.

KENNETH OPPEL VISTS LINCOLN PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Lincoln Public Library welcomed best selling Canadian children’s author Kenneth Oppel on October 29 when he came to make a special presentation about his best-selling children’s series, Silverwing and about the research he did on bats in order to write the series. The library partnered with the Ball’s Falls Conservation Authority to bring Oppel to Lincoln to make a presentation a library presentation as well as two presentations at the new Centre for Conservation at Balls Falls. The two grade six classes at Senator Gibson School were invited to the library presentation. Oppel talked about his fascination with bats and about he had tried to imagine a tiny bat travelling thousands of miles to migrate south for the winter. This gave him the central idea for the writing of Silverwing. As he wrote he learned about flight patterns, echolocation and roosting habits of bats. The grade six students of Senator Gibson had lots of questions for Oppel including how young people could approach a writing career as well as many questions about the habits of bats. This summer, Oppel’s latest book about bats, Darkwing was released. Darkwing is an exciting fantasy adventure about a prehistoric bat who may have lived in the age of the dinosaurs. The presentation ended with the students chatting with Kenneth and having their copies of his book autographed. This amazing Canadian children’s author, who opened for J.K. Rowling at the Skydome back in 2000, was equally relaxed with a small group in an informal setting. The library and grade six classes at Senator Gibson school loved meeting him. We can’t wait for the next book his prehistoric bat series!

FEATURED RECOMMENDED BOOK BY CATHY SIMPSON, DEPUTY CEO AND JAMES WAGNER, LIBRARY TECHNICIAN Dewey: The small-town library cat who touched the world by Vicki Myron "Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by the library director. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of the in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most."
