Timothy Mitchell, "Orientalism and the Exhibitionary Order" Islamic Art, ARTH 340 Outline/notetaking assignment, due April 17th in class. In lieu of a discussion paper, please type out an outline of the reading in the following manner. On the right hand margin, indicate the page number, and then write one or two sentences per page (or so) summarizing Mitchell's argument on that page in your own words. Do not use quotes (those only get in the way of you understanding what he's saying). You may, however, note where he makes a statement that is particularly crucial to his thesis. An example of this outlining technique follows... 312 Despite the fact that the French had access to places like Cairo and Egypt, their descriptions of them (even travellogues) were based not on first-hand experience but on reading things in libraries. This was seen as more important than seeing the sites themselves. (and so on)

Each page shouldn't be more than a sentence or two. You will be evaluated on your ability to represent Mitchell's text in your own words, and on how well you pick out the important points. Someone should be able to look at your outline and "get" Mitchell's point without actually reading (or re-reading) the text. Let me know if you have questions!
