Definition of a Paralegal. For purposes of this Association, a paralegal is defined as any person qualified through
education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a corporation (including professional,
limited liability or professional limited liability corporations) or any of its subsidiaries, affiliates, divisions, and/or
departments, hereafter referred to collectively as “corporation”, or governmental entity; working under the ultimate
direction and supervision of an attorney on a permanent or contract basis in a legal environment; performing
specifically delegated substantive legal work, which work for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of
legal concepts that, absent such paralegal, the attorney would perform the task.

applicant, is a paralegal who works under my direct supervision in the performance of specifically delegated
substantive legal work the majority of the time.

Membership Criteria.             Regular (Voting) Membership Criteria. Regular membership is open to any paralegal
employed or retained by a corporation (including professional corporations, limited liability corporations or professional
limited liability corporations) or by any of its subsidiaries, affiliates, divisions and/or departments or a governmental entity
working under the direct supervision of an attorney on a permanent or contract basis in a legal environment who meets at least
one of the following minimum qualifications: (check one)

(1) Successful completion of the Certified Legal Assistant examination of the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc.;
       or

(2) Graduation from an American Bar Association approved program of study for paralegals; or

(3) Graduation from a course of study for paralegals which is institutionally accredited though not ABA approved, and which
       requires not less than the equivalent of 60 college semester hours of classroom study; or
(4) Graduation from a course of study for paralegals, other than those set forth in (2) and (3) above, plus not less than six
       months of on-the-job training as a paralegal; or

(5) A baccalaureate degree in any field, plus not less than six months training as a paralegal; or

(6) Two years of work experience as a paralegal as defined herein above, plus not less than 60 college semester hours; or

(7) Five years of work experience as a paralegal as defined above under "Definition of a Paralegal."

For new members, please indicate which category above you are qualifying under and submit proof of certification,
graduation, or employment verification, with this application. All new applicants qualifying under (1) must submit proof of
certification. Applicants qualifying under (2), (3), (4), (5) or (6) must submit proof of graduation. Applicants qualifying under
(7) must submit verification of employment. Home study, video, or correspondence courses will not be accepted. Renewals
do not need to submit proof of eligibility once admitted as a member.

Regular Membership Renewal Criteria. A member may renew as a Regular Member if she or he is still employed by
corporation or governmental entity (either permanent or contract) as a paralegal. The Supervising Attorney Verification must
be signed. A member who has left the employ of a corporation or governmental entity or is no longer performing paralegal
duties may renew as an Associate (non-voting) Member, without attorney verification.

Associate (Non-Voting) Membership Criteria. Associate membership shall be open to individuals who satisfied the
qualifications of a Regular (Voting) Member above but who cannot fulfill the employment requirements. For application for
the Associate Membership, completion of the Attorney Verification is not required. Submission of education/certificate
documents is required. Associate memberships are freely transferable to Regular Membership status upon proof of
employment eligibility.

Membership Dues. Membership dues are submitted with your application and renewed each January. Dues for a Regular
Membership are $60.00; and for an Associate Membership, $50.00. ($10 discount allowed only if application is postmarked
or received by December 31, 2009 or earlier and $5 discount allowed if application is postmarked or received by January 31,
2010.)

HCPA is an affiliated association of the NALA and that all members are bound by the NALA Code of Ethics
and Professional Responsibility in addition to any code adopted by the Association.
